Moseley then & now Part1.
In this video, I use old postcards of Victorian/Edwardian Moseley that I merge with the photo that I took of the exact same place or building. Then, I add a video to bring a little bit of vitality to the images.
Relive the period of the steam & the electric trams. Rediscover the rows old shops. We will have a look at St Mary's Church (and its historical tower, which) is the pillar of "the Village". Let's go to Memory Lane!
Sources:
Yesterday's Warwickshire' series number 6 by John Marks. Many postcards in that booklet were produced by publishers like George Wells Riley, Thomas Lewis and Edwards & Co.

Thank you for the great video. I was born in Moseley in 1961 in a little terraced house, we had an outside loo and a tin bath in front of the fire. Lawn Terrace was one of 3 terraces which were demolished in 1966 to make way for the car park opposite the Post Office. The terraces ran parallel to St. Mary's Row. Lawn Terrace and Fern Terrace were on street level and the third, near Farquhar Rd was quite a lot higher, due to the hill...we knew it as 'The Rookery', although it must have had an official name. Although we didn't have a bathroom or loo, each two up two down house had a little garden. Most neighbours were family, if they weren't real family they were close friends. It was a great community. In the early 60's I remember that there was a huge free standing map on 'Bog Island.' (The triangle in front of The Bull's Head) It had buttons along the bottom, one for each place of interest. So if you were looking for the police station for example, you'd press the button and it would light up the location! You can imagine that it was a favourite with the kids : ) There was one on the 'Bog Island' in front of All Saints church in Kings Heath too. Great memories of a lovely village.

Thank you Drafonfly Chalabre for taking to Memory Lane with you. That was nice to see how Moseley was like in the 60s & 70s. You must have had a great time. Do you have any picture of the Terraces that stood parallel to those on St Mary’s Row? I am doing a Moseley part 2 but I don’t have a lot a materials to work on. Great comment! Thank you. And Merry Xmas to you 🎄🎅🎁

Moseley Village is really one of a kind. The first time I went there, I said to myself "I'm going to live here!" and so I did.

I was born at the Sorrento, Wake Green rd in 1956. Lived in the Moseley area for my first 12 yrs. Moseley Mixed school, Cannon hill park and the cub scouts. All great childhood memories. Anyone remember those nasty underground public toilets in the middle of the village?

Memory from the 1960s, W H Smith's black and white painted book shop with the bottle glass windows, next to the footpath to Moseley Park and Pool. Latterly a Pizza Express and then Moseley Hive.

Very interesting. I bet there was uproar when Mr Cadbury left the house to the people of Mosley, they probably would have preferred a lifetime supply of chocolate! 😆

Enjoyed your film. No mention of "Bog Island" & what must have been Victorian built underground toilets? And the coach house that's now Deolali's? The Bull's Head that's now Cuban ?..... Or Moseley private park?

Hi Wendleworld, thank you for your comment and feedback. I actually have a postcard of the Moseley Park & Pool from 1838! but I didn’t get the chance to get inside because I don’t have a key. I am currently working on a Moseley part 2. I’ll research the info you gave me and possibly would include them in the vid. Thanks 😊

According to this, the original Moseley Village was situated at the junction of Ladypool road (Now church Road) and Wake Green Road: andyunderscore.com/2018/01/20/moseley-1838/

This is great! But the Hawthornes is not Laburnum Grove! The description is correct but the video not. Laburnum Grove is the opposite side Woodbridge road nearer the Alcester Road end, with a much wider path, and two rows of houses facing each other.

Thank you for your comment. I actually realised my mistake in Dec when I was looking around Moseley Village for some nice Xmas decorations to film. I saw the plaque "Laburnum Grove" on the wall and I thought "Oh sh* I filmed the wrong building 😀!" And I thought of correcting my mistake in the comment section. But then I forgot... So thank you for correcting my mistake 👍

The Corporate signs and traffic lights ruin the traditional look of Moseley Village and blue street furniture doesn't look right. It should be black.. The fence of Moseley Hall needs painting. What have they done to Uffculme - that garish green plastic looking entrance - horrible. My brother went to Moseley School of Art - no longer a going concern. Birmingham didn't value its jewels.
