Beanie Babies have art and love to them. NFT ownership doesn't even earn you solidarity from other NFT owners. The NFTs function a lot like entry passes (imagine flashing a picture of your beanie baby to get into an illegal sex club), but since everyone can see your wallet, flashing your beanie baby to the wrong person may also cue the illegal sex club to beat you up for buying from the competition also. So, like. Imagine if your beanie babies came alive every night and tried to eat your spleen. And that's what NFTs are. It's bad all the way down.

Well… I know the beanie baby bubble popped but I have a story from 2021 for you. My wife gave her mom a beanie baby years and years ago. My mother-in-law loves giraffes and my wife thought is was cute. Nothing special. But all these years later my wife and I were joking around with her after seeing it on a shelf in the background of a zoom call. We told her she should pitch it out because it had to be a dust collector extraordinaire, or get it valued because it might be priceless. It turns out that giraffe was one the first few generations of beanie babies. It still had its tag, and because the tag has an error on it and it was essentially in mint condition it was worth a good deal of money. My wife and I were just laughing when she told us she had looked it up and told us what similar items were going for. We laughed even harder at the absurd amount of money she was offered for it. She turned down the initial offer because she had seen higher listings was able to get a few thousand more. She then bought a new car with cash. She had a trade in, granted, but it’s a good car. We tried to figure out what the return on investment had been over 24 years and it was something ridiculous like 7 or 800,000%. Without the tag error, “Twigs” the giraffe would have been worth about $10.00. But sometimes you get lucky, I suppose. I still think NFT’s are a hilarious scam though…

@@romxxii Heresy! TCGs are fun, NFTs aren't. Also you could buy some badass cards for the price of a cheap NFT, way less elitist market

NFT are nonsense. An art that you cannot display in your house. An art that nobody will appreciate unless you are into NFT. Its like collecting card. The cards wear off overtime. But you have their memories because you have them on hand. NFT, nobody cares in the future. Nobody checks the owner. Nobody will remember.

No, cards are at least something, they're physical items with actual value to them. NFTs are someone taking a picture of a card and trying to sell you the picture without giving you the card.

i talked about nfts with my therapist a couple of weeks ago. i wanted to become a professional artist for a very long time and practised alot, to the point where there was no fun in it anymore. there are also several other factors to this. but on thing that stands out to me now that i engage with other hobbies, alot of the art scene is very elitist and kinda pretentious in so many ways. i for instance also like juggling and the idea of telling someone their juggling is wrong or whatever or they do it for the wrong resons seems ridiculous. i think alot of it comes down to the idea or fixation on "natural talent" the insane prices of some pices, and this weird fetisiation of lö artist.

I also wanted to become a good artist, but it does require constant practice and a dedication I don't have within me to get to the level I'd want to be at - and you're right, at that point it's no longer enjoyable, it's a slog. Also, I have friends whose artistic talent I would kill for - but whose lives I would not want. There is really no money in it for the majority of people.

I have given a couple of paintings away, but if someone would like to pay for them then that would be ideal. Have always thought the art world is VERY elitist so I'm not going to hold my breath. I also know I have a long way to go in regards to some techniques, and am kind of a perfectionist (when it comes to my stuff anyway) and will not be able to afford formal training. Procrastination and lack of space doesn’t help either, but there is no way am I trusting NFTs or crypto. Just seems like playing Monopoly, where the money and status actually don’t mean a thing, especially when it’s over. Apologies if it’s nonsensical.

There is low genuine demand on art (you don't have that many walls to hang pictures) and competition is fierce. Elite overproduction in its finest. So it's general poor career choice. "art scene is very elitist and kinda pretentious" That's the whole point of its existence. You want to be elitist and keep new players away using bogus reasons, otherwise your margins would be down.
