I remember my grandpa farming in Wisconsin in the 1960s. The tractors had no cabs. Case and International Harvester tractors were the king. Grandpa attempted to fix his tractor on his own, even though he’d never done it before. He said the dealership charged too much. He did get it fixed. I admire you, Cole, and Cooper. You know so much about mechanics. Salt of the earth, honest as a day is long, humble, and would give you the shirts off their backs. I miss the simple farm life Grandpa had.

You have to fix your own stuff especially on a farm. Today with stuff so expensive I don't see how people can live anywhere and not fix their own stuff. From vehicles to equipment to their house!!!???

The tractor that I use for much of my fieldwork is a 1948 John Deere G. It doesn't have a dipstick, it still has the high and low plugs. I get what you are saying Pa Cornstar, I always wipe the dipstick off by habit. We're all open station tractors on our farm. It's what we have so that's what we use.😂

DC my tractor driving began on a ol W6 International. when i was twelve i stalled it out in the feild, scared dad would yell at me I tried to start it myself. it never had ellectric start, and while i was cranking it it kicked back and broke my arm. then a couple years later it broke my arm in three places i was filling the grinder, and had the big old thrasher belt, I fell and landed on the belt and it threw me through a plank fence. or first tractor with a cab was a 875 versatile.

The turbo attachment on top of the air breather intake is important. Its "spins" the air to knock out the dirt so the actual air filter stays cleaner over time. Since you have Roman to help out, perhaps you should get him a CDL and put him to work off season by hauling grain. You lost 1 trucker last year and perhaps he could help fill the gap.

I remember the days before tractor cabs very well, you always had a coat with you. One day in particular I was driving along the road, the weather was cold and windy and I was well wrapped up un coat and gloves. As I was passing a neighbours field where my uncle worked, he put his shirt sleeved arm out of the cab and waved to me. That annoyed me a bit, what I didn't know was he had been struggling in his small cab to get his coat off so he could wave in his shirt. Now we have cabs you could live in but we get finished in a few days.

I was trying to remember the first cab tractor I bought. 1993. It was a 5288 international. Had it about seven years and it had a short underneath the cab and burnt to the ground. Then I bought a 7120. That is the best tractor I have ever owned. Still running it. It was our biggest tractor and now I rake hay with it. I didn’t really care for the 5288. Every time I would get in a wet spot the transmission would kick into neutral. The dealer replaced the solenoid but it had a wiring issue that burnt it up. Had a ton baler hook up to it but my kids hauled water in buckets and saved it.
@lukedesselle2491

The 5x88 series was a nightmare they demoed us one a 5488 MFD in the early 80s, the tractor had less than 100 original hours and our IH dealer came pick it up in the middle of the field with a lowboy, it would just quit pulling in the middle of the field like you put the emergency brakes on lol Now when it would pull get out its way it would outdo our 4x4s but it would just to keep it running, I'm sure it was probably something electrical but dam!!

@@lukedesselle2491 I’m glad you said something. They were homely tractors as well. After the fire department finally got there and put it out it was a mess. Anything aluminum was in a puddle on the ground. I did sell it to a salvage place in Nebraska. It sounds like the tractor they demoed for you had the same problem. I had just put a thousand dollars into it. Put a new computer in it. The dealer said that was probably the problem. My son was baling with it at night when it started on fire. He used the fire extinguisher but ran out. He said he almost got it out. But it didn’t and once it melted through the stupid fuel tank that was it.

You have to have someone figuring out the paperwork paying bills and ordering seed and fertilize as well. Copper love to fix things and that what he is doing in the off season he's fixing equipment. A farm is just like a business you have guys working in different roles when needed and when its go time they all go and get the crops planted. Cole went to school for finance if I remember right. You can't have all of them trying to pay the bills or manage the stuff best to just have one doing the books and then others can check over it as needed. They might be a little heavy on man power for the size there are but Cole is redoing a house as well so Roman can do both. IF you watch Larson. You see (Randy I think) Doug's brother a little but not much because he is doing a lot of the paperwork figuring out what to plant where and what to order. Also I think Amy and Randy does a lot of the bill paying on the farm as well. I know The one that farm my place the son wife is in charge of all the money coming in and going out. IT helps them so much because they can do the farming and she feels useful because she does the books. It took a great big load off of the dad when she took over. You don't see the full story or all the things they do. Think of it like this is you have HR, purchasing, planners, and account in business you still need that in farming as well.
@garyduquette1784
@garyduquette1784 22 дня назад
@@johnunsicker7440 I farmed a thousand acres with my father in the 70s and early 80s. I know they farm twice as much but I also know durning the down times like winter and summer there is time to pay bills and do the figuring. Don’t forget they also pay a company to market the grain and pay an accountant too. Maybe because I’m retired but I think it’s disrespectful seeing daddy corn star doing the work and the boys are never around.
@johnunsicker7440
@johnunsicker7440 22 дня назад
@@garyduquette1784 Bills have to be paid all year long not jus in the down time. Yes this year Cole spent a lot of time on the house but Copper spent a lot of time on the equipment that we never seen. You see what Dad does and Cole but if no one is filming copper or 100% of the active then how do you know what each one is doing? If copper is haul grain is that important then loading the grain? If Cole paying bills is that less important then load truck in the winter. IF you watch Cole channel you see they was all in the field working to get the crops in. See you are only seeing a small piece of what is going on.
