Happy 2024 everyone! This first transcription of the year was quite challenging, took me a while. As with all my transcriptions, done entirely by ear. Enjoy and if you'd like the PDF, here's the link: tinyurl.com/bdhpnndb Today's sheet music trivia (first to answer correctly gets PDF): spot a measure with only triads (one hand).

I'm not able to find it now, maybe it got deleted, but there was another version of him playing this song where he did this weird interpolation of the Star Spangled Banner while playing that bass riff, in a totally different key and just all over the place. It was hilarious and supposed to be kinda goofy, but it also highlights one of my favorite things about Cory's playing where he just seems like a kid discovering the keys for the first time even after playing for so many years. Like he's just willing to explore every idea, and I think that's a lot of what makes him so damn creative.

I have a recording of it. He did it in his live show in LA in 2023. Unfortunately it’s only audio, but good enough quality for me to transcribe so definitely it’s good enough for someone much more skilled than me to transcribe

He did the same thing in Minneapolis over the summer, played the national anthem way out for a minute then brought it back perfectly into the "Switch" groove. Cory is beyond talented, and also a super nice guy

I’ve seen him play in tons of videos and with Snarky Puppy, but I honestly had no idea he sang (at least as a performer, at this level of skill) until just now.

Hats off to the audience for tight claps. So often you hear claps spread out over almost half a second between the early claps and the late claps. Not this audience, though! Also the piano man did a good job :)

Honestly, might be an unpopular opinion but I just want to put it out there. Cory is definitely not the same as he used to be. If there are any new viewers, you have no idea what Cory was doing on the keyboard 8-10-15 years ago. He was insanely creative. Modulations, progressions, voicings like you've never heard before. After Snarky Puppy, to me personally, his music has become way more generic and watered down. I always go back to his old stuff as I just don't get the kick from his recent recordings. I still cry from the stank when I listen to his old improv or covers, absolute genius. Would love to hear him play like that again.
@teenagegringo393
@teenagegringo393 7 месяцев назад
he just went into a different direction into more soul, I don't think one's worse than the other necessarily, he's developed his voice and songwriting quite a bit, but I get your point and miss him as well pushing the limits of harmony and rhythm in improvisation

Exactly, I think the last time I heard him play like he used to was at his, I believe was called, "The Revival" show with B. Slade, during the pandemic. B. Slade is an incredible musician as well, so if you haven't watched that, highly recommend it. It's a 26 min video.@@teenagegringo393

I have never related to a comment more in my life. I miss those early days of Snarky Puppy so bad. think it has to be an economically driven move that many revered jazz musicians like Cory end up making. Sacrifice the traits that set them apart for a more poppy appeal, which would lead to more money maybe? Idk. And as much as I love him, and literally regard this man as my favorite jazz pianist of all time, Robert Glasper has sort of gone in a similar direction. His early trio albums just blow me away. If you haven’t seen it already, look up his Bridgestone concert from 2009. It was just music on a completely different level. And it wasn’t his departure from straight ahead jazz imo: Black Radio and stuff with The Experiment are fire. I just wish he allowed his dope soloing style and lush chord progressions to shine more in his newer stuff. The last few times I saw him live: Stanford w/ Dinner Party and then during Blue Note Residency he also like barely played and just was sort of chilling the whole time… 🙃 It’s like all these artists are eliminating the most inventive and unique parts about them that made us like listening to them in the first place.

4:22 So... maybe I'm late to the party, but he says 👏 on the 2 and the 4, but the notation has us clapping on the 3 and the 3 (and the 3 and the 3...)... Did I miss something?
@bodhibeats8257
@bodhibeats8257 7 месяцев назад
Corey is thinking in double speed compared to the notation. Clapping on every three is going at half speed from clapping on two and four. I would guess this has been notated at half speed simply for readability. It’s easier to read eighth and sixteenth notes than it is to read 16th and 32nds.
