Why is my 1995 Audi a6 an absolute tank last thing I did years ago was timing belt this car has needed very little work throughout the years but I'm sure Scotty wouldn't believe it's still has the original AC never touched and still blowing ice cold air I don't even get how by now everything still works on the car perfectly heated seats power windows ac moonroof ect. 160k miles engine still runs very quiet. I saw a local guy with one before and his had well over 300,000 and he threw up his arms telling me he hasn't done barely anything

@Iron Arm I have relatives that work for Ford and couldn't believe under my Audi bumper is well made large shock absorbers so you can actually bump the bumper and it absorbs and takes a hit....... as to complete opposite with cars today you have a thin thin plastic shell bumper with styrofoam underneath is insanely cheap engineering compared to my 95 Audi. it's spent its life through Michigan salty Winters and the original factory underbody coating is still holding up great

No, I had a 1979 Audi 5000S! It was a money pit. If the temperature went below zero, NO START! I worked 3rd shift at the time. New spark plugs and oil filter and air filter every time it would start. Oil would thicken and freeze, push through the air filter, plug the oil filter and foul the spark plugs. I called my Audi "Fritz", because it was always on one. The speedometer went out ($500) one shock absorber cost seven hundred dollars plus installation. The light fell out of the interior dome. The GM made air conditioner went out, compressor and dryer plus installation was over $1200. In one year maintenance was over $6,000. IO kept it for 4 years, I could have bought a Lincoln or Mercedes for the money that I lost!

My first car was a 1981 Audi 5000 (the same car Higgins drove on Magnum PI). It was a straight 5. The weirdest engine I've ever seen. I'll say that it lasted a very long time, but it had some major problems. One insane one was their surreal vacuum door lock system, which wound up playing musical door locks whenever you tried to lock the car. I never had any major engine problems with it. Looking back with what I know now, the inline engine was very simple, and it lasted me from the 90,000 miles I bought it with to about 160,000 miles. Now, I grew up in Philly, so I didn't put excessive mileage on the car. This is nostalgia talking, but even with its immense weirdness and litany of problems, I loved that car. My favorite thing about it was the gigantic moonroof that went from the front to back seat. It never leaked and the motor never burned out either. But everything else slowly fell apart. I would never buy an Audi these days. They're beautiful junk.

Don't buy one if you don't plan on doing the work yourself :) Diagnosing the issues, Sourcing the parts, and putting in your own time to fix it. It's totally worth it... @@henryjohnson1505 the best advice I can give is use only VW/Audi approved oils, do oil changes and filter changes every 5k, Or 4k. Use 91 octane or higher.. and get yourself the OBD Eleven dongle. Its made for every VW/Audi after 1996 and beats any scan tool on the market without breaking the bank for the average joe. Scans everything in the car. Don't get me wrong, depending on the year and model of the car, there are many common parts that fail. You learn them and when replacing them, never go cheap. Nobody likes doing jobs twice. I have two Audi’s a A4 2007 and S4 2013 the A4 is by far one of the best German cars I have ever worked on. There is tones of room to to work on it ( better then other German cars) and by far has been super reliable it’s got 149k miles the only problem it had was a valve cover gasket leak. Which is onto of the engine only took me a hour to fix. Now the S4 man that’s a different story I modded it with aftermarket mods to make it faster but to be honest is pretty reliable has had some expensive fixes that I was able to do for cheap so not bad. My best advice is do your research on the Audi you get. But I would not get one if you have no experience fixing cars the reason why I am able to afford it and many others is because we fix our own cars. Unless you know someone that can do it for cheap or you yourself now how to work on it I wouldn’t recommend buying a German car at all or if your rich🤷🏻‍♂️

Greetings from Bulgaria. I'm driving a 30 year old Audi, runs on LPG and so far is indestructible. The only things changed are struts, radiator and carburetor. @449Raphael
@449Raphael 4 года назад
Peter G. Yes, i believe you. The old Audi,s are indestructible and good cars. But the new ones are money pits. They drive great, but are expensive to buy, they have those carbon build up problems, electrical problems, service is bad, no warranty after 2 years. When you try to sell it, you find out that it is the ultimate depreciation machine. I friend of me had purchased a new 90000€ Q5. After 25 months his dashboard gets pitch black. He could see nothing on it anymore. He went to the dealer and they had to replace the whole screen. It was like 15 hours work to take it out and a new one back in and he had to pay 2500€. The car was only one month out of warranty, but Audi refused to do something on the price. In the meantime at a Honda dealership they give a 14 year old Honda a new gearbox for free because of metal fatigue. The car had 250000kms but Honda was honest and say this gearbox broken should not happen and it's our fault. So they replace it free of charges. Try to get that from German car manufacturers, they don't know what service is and let you pay for everything that's going wrong!
@peterg.3181
@peterg.3181 4 года назад
@@449Raphael I got a little confused about what you said. Every Audi that's bought brand new from the dealer have 5 year guarantee and every vehicle failure during that time is fixed for free. About the new ones, they are money pits if you don't know how to maintain them. It's getting even worse if you don't have a mechanic who understands Audi technology. Same as you, a friend of mine wanted an Audi but used 9-10 years old and of course I told him "It's not worth it, you will regret it" but he bought it anyway A6 3.0 TDI. Time passed but the damn thing didn't brake, neither used any oil or coolant. The Audies are high end over engineered machines and need some special care and if you and your mechanic know that, they can be just as reliable as Toyotas. But yes, they need a bit more attention and understanding!

Ended up getting rid of it as it was costing me about $3000 per year in mechanical repairs as they are unessesarily complex to service and not designed for reliability in mind. @nicktaylor7680 shame aint it I think Audi makes some lovely looking cars (interior I prefer to other German too) there is a taxi driver near me uses an A6 diesel it’s a great fast ride and I’ve been in an S6 that handles on rails with the Quattro 4 wheel drive. R8, RS6 etc lovely looking cars but endless moneypits I was too scared to get one a second hand A3 or A4 goes quite cheap but the list of common problems was huge and all expensive stuff. Went with Ford Focus in the end, no car is perfect but lots of parts available and I avoided the Powershift automatic that caused so much noise in US as most people there drive autos. Mk 3 avoided the 3 cylinder 1.0 turbo went with 4 cylinder Duratec, 67000 mikes it’s on 94000 now change oil every 5000 it doesn’t burn any oil. Had a hose replaced and window regulator and a spring on back. Try to drive it smooth and hope for the best. It’s got enough technology for me (voice control, Bluetooth, USB, 8 speaker system sounds very good, parking sensors, heated front screen etc is decent spec for 2011), some of the tech on newer cars and especially German is crazy, stuff you don’t need that costs a fortune to fix.

On the other hand, at McClellan, I bought a 1984 VW Quantum (the VW equivalent of the Fox), nothing worked, the windows wouldn't roll up or down, I changed out the neutral safety switch three times (so the car could start). I got it working for a few days and in 1986, traded it in on a 1986 Isuzu Trooper, one of the best vehicles I ever owned, and the only one I EVER bought new.

Scotty, I'm thinking about buying a 2016 Scion tC with a standard transmission and 22,000 miles. Is it worth it for $13,500?
