Oil condition is critical on turbo cars because the turbo uses the same oil (engine oil) as lubricant. Turbos spin very fast and can get extremely hot which will burn & breakdown the viscosity & properties of the oil. My friend changes the oil on his 2007 GLI @3K and it's almost 200K still running strong.
@williamhall9204
@williamhall9204 2 месяца назад
@@ArshAZ83 3,000 miles between oil and filter change is excellent. But 2,000 mile intervals are ridiculous. That would amount to 50 oil changes for a car with 100K on the odometer.That is excessive. @ArshAZ83
@ArshAZ83 2 месяца назад
For Germans doing scheduled maintenance just makes sense and you eschew it at your own detriment. For Americans, driving a Toyota for 50k miles without changing the oil is considered a badge of honour or something. An electron microscope isn't 'worse' than an old light microscope because it requires a lot of maintenance. In fact it's vastly superior, can do things the light microscope can never do, and the maintenance is just what you have to do. A BMW M4 CSL is a TEM, a Toyota Corolla is a light microscope.

I saw a video of a guy proving that when you suck the oil out of the dipstick, you don't leave a bunch of slug or even oil behind. He sucked it out and then took the oil plug off. Nothing came out. So I change my Mercedes oil that way now. The drain plug is in a position that sprays oil all over the frame, if you don't use something to make it turn downward. Before getting a suction oil changer, I used an old plastic oil container and cut it to guide the oil downward into the drain pan.
@svenschwingel8632
@svenschwingel8632 2 месяца назад
Sludge is either a relic of the past with bad oils from back in the day or a result of over-extended drain intervals and thus, high oil oxidation. If you change your oil early enough and run synthetic formulations, there won't be any significant sludge buildup. And depending on the position of the drain plug, suction might actually get out more of the old oil than draining if your suction hose can make it all the way down to the bottom of the pan.

@cole4987 2 месяца назад
@@Veikra You're correct, luckily the pcv valve is cheap and relatively easy to replace, the secondary air injection ports have begun to be a problem for me and it seems difficult and expensive to fix. From the small amount of research I've done it might be something I can ignore but I'm not sure. The catalytic converters are also problematic because of the placement being super close to the engine which melts the metal and clogs them up. That can turn into a major problem and destroy the engine if it's not caught in time and that's what I fear the most with this car. They're also a pain to replace but even if I did I would gut them instead of replacing them but that has it's own legal issues.

I've owned 2012 A4 with manual transmission since 2014 (second owner), and love it. I ignore the handbook and change the oil every 5000 km. So far at 161,000 km the only major issue is a pinhole leak in the AC condenser. I don't track the vehicle. The timing chain is "lifetime" - read $160,000 km - but the tensioner on my model year is prone to failure. The dealer recommends running it until the trouble light comes on and the car starts misbehaving on ignition. Preventative replacement would be CA$5,000 at the dealership, so not an easy decision. I want to keep the car for 20+ years as it's in amazing shape, even in Toronto in the winter. All advice welcome!

Actually using an oil extractor can remove more gunk than using just the good old drain plug. See Mercedessource, some oil pan designs are not so well designed and the only way to remove all sediments is to remove the oil pan completely, or use the oil extractor. Same for automatic transmissions, remove the pan.

There's nothing wrong with sucking out the engine oil through the dipstick, depending on how the pan is designed of course. On my Volvo I get at least as much out that way, if not even more, compared to the more traditional method. The only downside as I see it, is that you don't get the chance to take a look around the engine, etc. Otherwise you just drive the car for 10-15 minutes, and instead of crawling around in the dirt, you just push the plastic pipe down the dipstick tube and start pumping the oil out.
