If you feel like you're falling behind in life, i'm also having a quarter-life crisis

If you feel like you're falling behind in life, having a PLAN isn't always the answer. You need to STOP THINKING, and START DOING.
I recently celebrated by 25th birthday, and it seemed like a great time to tell you all how I really feel. If you, like me, feel like you're falling behind in life, like you should have a *plan*, or that you haven't achieved anything meaningful, you're not alone.
In short, my encouragement to you (and myself) is to stop overthinking. Stop planning, stop trying to control the outcomes, and just *DO/MAKE STUFF*. Oh, and toss those unrealistic expectations out the window ok.
Only God knows the outcome. We just have to put in the work.

Sometimes I feel like I'm moving in entirely the wrong direction and its so stressful, because I don't even know what the right direction is. I'm trying to focus on enjoying what I have and trusting God will lead me. So far in my life the best things were unplanned by me and planned by God. Thanks for the video!

Maryellen, this video spoke to me so deeply. I am 20 years old and struggling to find a career that suits me. I have been through 4 majors and 3 colleges and I still feel no closer to knowing what I want. I see my peers going on to graduate programs and I feel as though I am less successful. Great video! God bless!

Also I would love a video on you talking on how you plan and follow God's will, etc.

This is so insanely timely. Like wow. I realized last week that I don't think there's a specific thing I want to do as a career/etc, and there's not a "niched" money making career/job that I can envision myself doing in 5 years! So for right now, my mindset and actions have changed to simply doing what is in front of me and letting Him show me if I need to do anything else as I explore the options some. Thank you for all you shared because it means a lot. ❤️ We all have different lives because God has made us all different! And praise Him for that.

I'm a planer. I struggle with having thoughts about what my future house will look like, but it's 10 years away from reality. I love where you live. Like all those beautiful parks and places in nature, here where I live and where I lived before there are no places like that. No places at all in nature where you can sit and enjoy the sun. I would love to have places like that. And I'm struggling with depression, after work being in my house all day long and doing nothing. I don't know why I do nothing. I don't come out of the house. Maybe because there are no beautiful places where I live? Sometimes I hate it. Sometimes I wish I could swap my life, because if I'm honest, it's boring.

A lot of what you said reminded me of when I was 25 and even up to 35 and didn't have a plan! If I can offer any nuggets now that I'm turning 37 (and still don't have a plan) and am the happiest, least anxious, and most successful I've ever been, it's to 1) embrace being a generalist, the world needs them as much as specialists and niches, who cares if your job doesn't have a title and you do a little bit of everything. Focus in doing it well! 2) quit measuring yourself against your peers, it's toxic. And 3) give yourself a break!trying to measure up to the social construct of success will burn you out. *You* define what success means to you, and you're allowed to change your definition of success too!

You should write a book one day - I would 100% buy it. Being gifted or interested in so many areas often makes you an excellent leader or teacher - you can relate to other's easily. What a woman!

I feel like most of us don't have these problems because we're only good at 2 things 😅 God has made you a special person with many talents and the potential to do so many things with them so I'm sure that He will make a plan clear in time

I’m 33 and still don’t have a plan. I go through life by the seat of my pants! But my job right now I make $6000 (Canadian) a month driving truck. I’ve always thought about what I should do with my life. But I’m not a planner. I also don’t stick with the company for longer than a few years… cause I get bored…. Trips are always last moment. And if it is planned I don’t pack till the night before lol. I don’t think you always need a plan

We had a speaker present her career path to our graduate program and she started off asking everyone what they wanted to do with this program and everyone started answering very specifically and I said “everything!” My peers thought that was hilarious, but I don’t wanna lock myself into anything, I literally wanna try everything

As a 20 year old who has had *all* of her life plans fall apart for various reasons, this video was so insightful. Why bother with a plan anyway? 😂 thank you for sharing all of this. It’s comforting to remember that I’m not the only one who feels like this and God is so aware of me, as I am and where I am in my life!! 💛 bye perfectionism, let’s go flow-create some art ✨

It reminds me a bit of what someone else wrote (I think in one of the Guardian lifestyle articles) and that was that once you start focusing on perfection, for example on keeping everything super clean and super tidy you're actually constantly frustrated, because really if that is your goal then you're sensitized to focusing on every little spot and every little thing that isn't perfectly in place. So we have to find a balance somehow, and that's not always easy, because of expectations -- our own expectations and what we perceive to be the expectations of others. LIke you said, many people struggle with it -- I suppose especially in an age where we are expected to be super efficient and be super achievers and "reach our full potential". I myself tend to take it to the other extreme and perhaps float a bit too much. Why is it that sometimes things can become clearer (it has seemed to me) when I'm in a dire crisis? Then suddenly my priorities are very clear and I'm motivated to focus and act on them to the exclusion of everything else. To some extent it's like our situation here on earth. I think we tend to want to think there is something like an almost-perfect life, while actually our lives are a struggle. ALL of us humans are struggling in some way, no matter what surface impressions might be. Some times its easier and sometimes its harder. The key is to trust God (that He knows what He is doing and wants for us in our lives). There is a struggle between God and Satan (the forces of darkness). And we with our sinful natures and vulnerabilities are caught up in it. (I'm saying what Christians already know.) But the bottom line is that this life here on earth however beautiful it might be is temporary. I'd be more than satisfied if only I could be in right standing with God when I die! That's what it all boils down to. In the end, all of my life from when I was conceived and born leads up to the point of my death -- and the question of whether I am safe with God at that point, or not ---"lost", estranged from Him, in rebellion, caught up in something that is an obstacle between Him and myself. So I try not to be distracted by things that aren't important, and focus on the most important things. That will be enough. What helps me (like it helps many other Christians -- I hear them talking about it on the Christian radio segment in the evenings, and it's so powerful) is to remember those verses of ""Not my will but Your will be done", and “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, this is the one who will save it. For what good does it do a person if he gains the whole world, but loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and the glory of the Father and the holy angels.“ Jesus said, "Strive (some translations say 'strive hard') to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able." So I ask myself, Who is God and what does He want from me? (I'm HIS servant.) That helps to clarify things. Though sometimes it seems as though I'm floating. It just turned out this way that I spent some time writing comments today ...

I'm sorry Maryellen that I got so excited about the topic that I started writing a comment before I'd watched your video all the way through. I agree having a plan is over-rated, I chuckled in commiseration when you said that. A very interesting exploration (chat) -- I agree with much of what you said. This is a good kind of video, more of the same would be welcome! In my own life I don't dabble much, not at the moment. (Though it could be relaxing.) A few years ago I prayed to God one day and asked Him in tears to use me as He sees fit. And He took me up on that. I still have free will but He has set me a task and it takes a high priority. He even guides me on a daily basis -- some days more than others. So life can indeed be a big adventure, "stranger than fiction" isn't just an expression. But sometimes I've been rebellious in this situation, especially when I felt disappointed and frustrated and couldn't see or understand why I still have this task. But it's clear that it is what He wants, so I go on, I go forward, step by step. I trust Him. I thank Him. He knows best. I'm safe with Him. I'm HIS servant.

Hello again, Maryellen:) Thank you for this. I am someone who tends to just think and think and think and think about what I want to do/make/achieve so much, that I never actually get most of those things done. Who can relate? I overthink things way too much (how will I get this, who will help me do this, why am I doing this, will I be glad I did this in five years, do I want to wait or start now... etc.) and while those are good questions to ask yourself, don't let them get in the way of your dreams, wants, goals and needs. Again, thank you, Maryellen. I enjoy watching your content so much, it is so pure and refreshing. And I would love to see a video about what you mentioned!

Hey gal! You might be on the path already but you're in a 'travelling' stage where you're on the way, but don't feel like you're fully there. You're doing great!! I was in the same space and so confused - He uses some of us with open plans to help us be creative and reach out to others :)

I related to 1000% of this. I am also trying to build a brand and planning deep into the future overwhelms the process so much. You make a great point- instead of thinking about steps from A to Z, take step A to B. I really love that. Beautiful, comforting video!

Wowow inspirational! Definitely relate to a lot of that Melon, 100% a planner/perfectionist myself, and it really is so debilitating because fear of any deviation from perfection is what prevents potential. Just enjoying life *sigh* should be easy right :(.

Lovedddd this video! I relate sososo much to having loads of interests and feeling like you’re betraying one if you focus on the other… especially with social media where I put pressure on myself to be visually consistent and quickly and easily understood, even though my favourite creators are the ones that seem almost haphazardly and sprawlingly creative and honest. Always trying to figure out if I should be presenting as a brand or business or just a fellow person making things! Anyway, great video and loved the editing style x
