I know it can be a challenge to practice your instrument. Wether you play violin, piano, viola, cello, guitar, woodwinds, brass, I hope to give you the motivation you need to pick your instrument up and practice. Wether you have practiced for years or you are just starting off at your instrument, practicing makes perfect, so leave a like, drop a sub, and go practice.

Yeah, definitely! To me It becomes less about work, and more about when you play with other people. Especially if it’s with close friends!

I swear, my mom knew it would teach me these traits from the moment she had me start piano when I was 5 and violin when I was 7. Today, playing violin professionally is my side hustle, but I've had many people tell me they admire my ambition and drive. Also, my piece might be too hard for me, but my teacher thought me learning Sibelius was a good idea and she wanted to see me struggle. Haha.

I'm an adult learner. I've been playing for almost 2 years. I work away from home on a 7 days on, 5 off roster, and have a spare 80's "op shop" violin that cost me $20 with no string or bridge, so i've re-strung it & had my luthier fit a bridge & check the sound post so it's playable but I'm not invested in it enough compared to my home violin, and I dont mind leaving it at work without worrying about it getting broken or stolen, so i can practice 2-3 days while i'm away, and i get 2-3 days while i'm at home, so averaging about an hours practice every 3rd day, and from previous hobbies I know the value of the a firm foundation to build on, which in this instance are scales & that's what i mostly practice. I'd rather play "ode to joy" beautifully than "Ave Maria" poorly. At the moment i'm working on Boccerini's string quintet OP11 No5. Minuet, and I found out I really hadn't heard much more than the first 8-10 bars on TV/ movies, so i've been listening to the whole track to get the feel for it. This week I've had a sinus infection, and though I probably could work on my bow control, or run some scales, I know my hearing isnt right and I'd rather not practice than practice bad habits or reinforce poor intonation. I have been reading "The art of violin playing- book 1" by Carl Flesch though. it's way above my level still, but after the 3rd or 4th read and another 4-5 years behind me and it'll probably click one day. So you could consider that listening to the piece I'm working on as practice & reading the music as it plays, so I'm not "on the tools" but i'm still growing my knowledge. I wish i could get some benefit from practice in my current condition. Thanks for the talk & keep the content coming out! Thanks

Thank you! I’ve been thinking this for about a year now, Although I haven’t implemented it very well. But the problem is (and I don’t remember if I thought of this myself, or if I’m just stealing it from someone), that in order to become self disciplined, you first have to be self disciplined enough, to discipline yourself. So for people like me, that are very impulsive, or have very little will power, it’s often extreme difficult to commit yourself to something that doesn’t already come naturally to you. So your in this kind of paradox, and I haven’t been able to think of a solution for it, beside maybe accountability, which isn’t going to be convenient for everyone. IDK though.

Assuming that you actually do indeed LOVE to play the violin, or any instrument, and do it grandly ... then practicing should be a monumental PLEASURE in your life - Nothing is achieved in life specifically by doing nothing.

My instrument is the cup of tea. I can slurp in g major but I procrastinate over minor chords slurps. 🤣 But this is a great video, very encouraging. I’m a beginner on piano and discipline is something I’ve never encountered in myself..

I've been playing classical guitar for a long time, although it doesn't show 🙂and time and time again, I would see someone play to a level unachievable for me so I would get depressed and stop practicing altogether.... Recently I switched my mental programming by figuring out that no matter how good I would get, there will be always someone somewhere even better, so the only comparison I need to make is with myself. Then I started to practice every day no matter how little, anything between 5 minutes to a few hours, and I began to enjoy how I got better. Few months ago I took up violin also and I am again enjoying the process of getting better every day. I got my wife to film me playing from time to time and I found that seeing myself on video is really instructive.

beyond the (maybe just slight) irony, what you said is inspiring and true, not too philosophical, maybe just not too superficial and that is a good thing (and now I'll go practice my scales with vibrato as my teacher told me... 🙂 )

I practice religiously every day.. Most of the day 1hour. Weekends more. For 1 year and almost 1 months now. Everyday. I am. Learning vibrato since January. I am so disciplined it's actually scary.. Yes I missed a couple of days.. Appointments and grown up life of a single parent sometimes isn't helping.. But I practice.. 😊

@@ViolinMechanic the thing is.. You are already good so you put in all the effort and probably the discipline as well.. I just started last year in February.. And I am kind of old.. Not really.. 38.. So less time to play and practice all together.. So discipline will have to make up for the many years I did play other instrument.. Or nothing at all.. And sometimes.. When I get really frustrated with double stops for example I practice them even more.. It's a 'challenge accepted' thing.. Don't let the double stops or spiccato or everything else defeat me 💪😂

Why so serious?? I thought I'd get some laughs! 😂 But I have come to see that life is practice. If you don't believe me, have you ever been in a place where you start to forget to brush your teeth? Do your laundry? Get to bed on time? All these things require daily practice. Even procrastination takes practice. Just like you said, the more you choose procrastination, the more it is embedded in your thinking and even your body.

I use berating myself as a means to get better. When I berate myself, there is that fighiting spirit that tells me to prove it wrong. So I guess berate yourself to get better(but if you berate yourself and do nothing to fight it then it will make your motivation even worse lol)?
