I reserved the Premiere Ariya in Jan 22 and finally got it Jan 2023. 2-weeks prior to my Ariya coming in Tesla slashed Y price and requalified for $7,500 tax credit. Now Y was back in conversation for me and I looked at it hard. My reservation MSRP (which was being honored) was $53,420. The Y-LR MSRP with color I wanted and white interior was $56,990 … so $3.5K more. I had uncertainty about tax credit but my reservation pre-dated change in law and ultimately I did get tax credit so it worked out, but I realize new buyers won’t get the credit now. The reason I kept my Ariya reservation instead of going with Y-LR is I liked the style much more than Y, I didn’t need the better 0-60 or need AWD. I also found Y to be stiffer ride, not fan of full one-pedal driving and felt Ariya was a smoother quieter ride overall plus was still going to be $3.5K less. I agree Y has better performance specs and range, but at the time I was reading that the Tesla’s never get the reported range so figured range may be a wash (getting 290 mi in my Ariya). Regarding the ID4, there were 6 of them sitting on lot next door to my Nissan dealership the week before my Ayira finally came and stickers were all $54-56k so more than the Premiere Ariya and not nearly as quality inside and out and lower range, so a pass for me. To put the Ariya at the bottom of the pile and give it such a harsh review doesn’t make any sense. Kyle in this and you first ride review you really were harsh in the review. Maybe not as harsh as Vinfast, but close. I have watched many reviews of the Ariya and your review is a huge outlier. You make it sound like it is the worst EV on the market. I just think you didn’t like so many requesting you to review this vehicle and went into the review like you were forced to do it and it biased your review. The comment the car would have been good if it came out 6 years ago. Come on 2017, there were barely any EVs on the market in 2017 and what was on the market at that time was >$80K. Model 3 came out late 2017 and it was a game changer for price at mid 50K at the time. I don’t know why but you really poisoned the well regarding this vehicle in this and your first look/drive review on OOS. The comments on OOS review were, this car is trash, garbage, Nissan going out of business with this car, only buy it if less than $38k. 38K is Kona and Niro territory. I had 2018 Kia Niro PHEH before I bought Ariya. My Aryia is much better than Niro, not even close. No regrets getting my Ariya, the delayed launch did hurt it and I think the AWD Platinum spec is over priced, 8K more than Premiere but it has lived up to all the reasons I bought it and I have received many compliments on how well it looks from people that have seen it at charging stations and from friends.

What’s bizarre is Kyle uses the Tesla MY LR dual motor and the VW ID.4 AWD in this video as his baseline to compare value pricing against Ariya’s top tier trim Platinum +. Fact is the Platinum + feature for feature way overmatches either of those EV models. . If Kyle and Coleton would have done their homework before they shot this video they would have realized that the Ariya Evolve + AWD is a closer match to the MYLR dual motor and VWID.4 AWD big battery as the Ariya Evolve + AWD is priced comparatively at $55-$56K. IMO the MYLR has much more to offer than the VW ID.4 AWD but Kyle continues to recommend the ID.4 because he says it just makes him smile when he drives it? Well that’s not subjective, is it? I’d love to have a face to face conversation and ask Kyle why he keeps recommending the VW AWD as such a bargain in this price segment. If it’s so great by comparison why doesn’t the ID.4 offer the following features but the Ariya does? *Heat Pump, *battery pre-conditioning, a *sunroof that actually opens, a *10 KW larger battery for better EPA rated range, * rear disc brakes, and a decent * UI that actually can receive OTA updates and doesn’t require a trip to the dealer. Yeah the VW ID.4 is a bargain alright because VW has stripped away many crucial features. So based on the highly biased garbage Kyle seems to be spewing these days, I think it’s about time for me to just move on from the Kyle Conner show.
I saw in a review that the base Ariya includes loads of features as standard, such as head up display, heated seats (don’t recall if the steering wheel is also heated), and blind spot monitoring among others. I also think you have to compare the FWD base Ariya at about $43,000 with all it includes vs what else you can get at that price. I know the model 3 starts around that price with RWD. Don’t recall if the ID 4 does or the Ioniq 5/EV-6. I do believe Kyle’s right when you consider the similar price points. The rest is kinda subjective. I would hate the lousy software of the ID 4, as I personally give that more weight/value. After all, you interact with the software all the time and problems with it could lead to many frustrations, if not safety issues. I would love the tech on the Tesla and the option of easy road trip planning and charging. I don’t own an EV and can only judge by what I see and read, and I realize I might think differently if I had experience with some of them. However, I think many potential new EV buyers might be in the same boat as me on this.

Guys - you need to do your homework before you launch another haphazard video like this one. The Ariya top tier trim that you’re comparing in this video to the the MYLR dual motor and the VW ID.4 AWD are really bad comparisons. if you woukd have done your due diligence before you pulled the trigger on this video you would have come to the conclusion that the Ariya Platinum + trim offers many costly features that neither the Tesla or VW have. Obviously Leather is one of those features , but HUD, a passenger memory seat, and 11 airbags come to mind to justify some of the added costs. Bottom line: The Ariya Platinum + trim isn’t in the same league as a BMW IX by any means. However the zPlatinum + trim far outmatches any trim that the MY or ID.4 can offer. A more suitable trim in the Ariya line up would be to compare the Evolve + AWD trim and the price tag is right there $55-&56K. And Kyle, why do you keep recommending VW ID.4? You’ve commented before that it makes you smile and feel happy every time you drive it? IMHO Coletons ID.4 AWD big battery as you refer to in this video is really poor example to compare even the Ariya Evolve + AWD trim.to. That said, the Ariya Evolve + AWD has a Heat Pump, battery pre conditioning, a sunroof that actually opens, HUD, a decent UI that can actually receive OTA updates, rear disk brakes, and oh yeah another 10KW of usable battery capacity.. Aside from the larger battery and having greater EPA range, does the ID.4 offer any of those features I just listed? . Seems to me VW should be discounting the ID.4 because they have elected to take all of those cost cutting measures. Lastly you and Coleton focused way too much in this video on the tax credit potential of the MY and ID.4. Everything considered is really Nissan’s fault that it no longer qualifies fotr a tax credit because of some last minute legislation that was decided last summer in the 11th hour? Fact is if the IRS wasn’t dragging their feet right now they would be enforcing the IRA legislation signed into law last August, Neither the MY or the ID.4 is technically eligible at this moment to receive the max tax credit of $7500. ie As of January 1, 2023 the tax credit for both cars you refer to in this video should actually be reduced to 50% of $7500 or $3750 due to their battery chemistry and raw material sourcing. So if buyers don’t pull the trigger soon on either of those models they may get a rude awakening when they file their 2023 taxes and be shocked when they only receive a $3750 tax credit. In summary, this YT video is just not up to the normal Out of Spec Review standard and having to listen to Kyle’s ongoing rant here especially turned this YTV into a total train wreck.

How can you go from saying the Ariya has napa leather and suede and looks the nicest/coolest and the others use fake leather and then say the Ariya has the cheapest interior. Because the plastic on side of the seat is flimsy... an area you will almost never touch and barely see, let alone pull on with force? And hard touch plastics does not automatically mean cheap and is commonly used below the elbow on doors depending on the design. When you get to pressing on it and its flimsy and creaks, then I'd say it qualifies as cheap. I mean did the car rattle and squeak when driving it? Also, charging speed is still not as big a deal as you're making it for DAILY use. It boils down to how much time you have to plug it in. Most people will have 12+ hours available to allow the car to charge at home, and in most cases they won't need that much time because no one is draining their battery every day. If you have the time without adjusting your daily life, then how fast it charges doesn't matter. If you're living a life where you're only at home for 6 hours, then you have another problem. I could understand these type of rants on the BZ4x, but it seems overboard here. The price IS a tough pill to swallow, but ya'll are making it seem as if Nissan chose to forfeit the tax credit.... which is NOT an at-sale rebate like many make it out to be, BTW. They had no idea the rebate was going to be pulled all of a sudden right when they were finally able to get the thing on lots. And also many have stated that if you're leasing you can still get the tax credit.
also Colton made a comment on his detailing video about the plastic on the bottom of the doors and seats on the model y and said the same thing they were below the arm rest and on the bottom of the seat so were a non issue cause they were not rattling when driving
Yes, I find the interior and build quality of Ariya to be nicer than Y. I had reserved and purchased the Premiere FWD as a wanted higher range and I didn’t need AWD and the additional $8k for the Platinum wasn’t worth it to me. Since I had binding agreement I got the $7500 credit. Unfortunately for nonresvationists you will not get credit. I got my Ariya about 2 weeks after Tesla slashed their prices and considered canceling my reservation and going with Y as at time getting was uncertain if I got tax credit. Very happy I didn’t cancel. With tax credit my Premiere Ariya (in stunning Aurora Green and nice interior trim) ended up being less expensive than the Y-LR and I love how it looks compared to Y.
We just bought a 2019 leaf SL plus. Couldn’t be happier. Even has stalks and a driver’s display, carplay, more bells and whistles than we are used to. First EV, coming from a 08 rav4 limited V6.
Im strongly considering getting the Nissan AWD. Ive watched so many reviews and it seems to always do well on range and drive not to mention it has just about all the extras thrown in. This review seemed to just be hating on Nissan think you guys are better than this.

I’d be concerned about Tesla service and not having a vehicle for extended period in the event of a problem with the car. Has Tesla improved in this regard? I spoke with a telecom tech who bought a new Model 3. It died on the first day and the interaction with Tesla and their terrible communication was not impressive. No car for several weeks, difficulty getting status on his vehicle however after the issue was resolved he does really like the product (no surprise).
Millions of people do just fine with a Tesla as the only vehicle at home. Tesla service in my experience is better than any legacy automaker. Sometimes better than luxury brands too. Any small issues I just submit it through the app and a mobile tech comes to wherever I want to meet and fix it. With my Mercedes, I have to set up an appointment 1 month out and drive to the dealer then pay my Uber home to wait.
"You gotta get over it and buy the better car". My wife and I were determined not to get a Tesla but wanted one in this segment at this price. We really love the R1S but with the Tesla Model Y Performance being a solid 30k cheaper it was really hard for us to justify waiting longer and paying the more (though I think the R1S is absolutely worth the extra cost, just the extra features aren't justifiable for us for the cost compared to what the model Y offers). So we got a Model Y Performance... With it's price cuts and tax credit it's really really hard to beat for this segment. Which is a bit ironic since before the price cuts and tax credit it was actually not a great value compared to others. Only a bit more and you get an R1S... for around 65k the first wave of AWD Lyriq was a better pick for us. Though with the Lyriq pricing now at about 77k for a likely slower car with the Model Y Performance now being about 61k I mean we couldn't just do it. I was interested in hit Ariya and thought the exact same thing. Our Model Y performance was cheaper, faster, more storage, longer range etc... I mean it's hard to resist the Model Y right now at that price segment. I hate how it's front looks but I can get over it for what it offers and near Rivian performance, so much fun.
Please stop pricing the "tax credit" as you will pay "x" amount after "tax credit"!!!!!!! Please review the information that says this will only apply to the taxes you file the next applicable year and you have to make less than a certain amount of money to be "eligible" to get some off of the total you pay(ed) in taxes for the past year. THIS IS NOT AN UPFRONT CREDIT AND IS NOT GUARANTEED!!!!!!

If 2019-2022 e-trons still weren’t suffering from that unsolvable high-voltage / battery recall; they’d still be the best recommendation for a used EV. You can find several 2019 e-trons sub-$30k, prestige trim, with less than 15k miles on them in the current market… almost 60% off their original MSRP… but the recall recommends only charging them to 80% maximum, which leaves you with a realistic 170 mile range on a good day and 100 miles if you’re lucky in the winter. Oh, and you’re always wondering if your car is going to start on fire in the garage. It’s f’n maddening how that’s never spoken about in any of your reviews of the e-tron!!!
The most negative and contradictory review I’ve ever watched by Out of Spec Reviews which was really a turn off for me. Kyle had a totally different perspective of the quality materials and craftsmanship used in the Ariya when reviewing a Copper colored Ariya prototype more than a year ago. Now it’s got too much cheap plastic? Kyle also sat in the rear seat behind the driver in the Copper prototype and really liked the comfort and roominess at that time.. Coleton’s perspective also got more negative (often agreeing with Kyles negative rant);since he did a solo in depth review of the Bolder Gray Venture + a few weeks ago. His overall conclusion was the Ariya was was pretty good but not great. So what’s so different now? Also watched the follow up test drive and range test and Kyle and Coleton seem to be warming up to it during and after the test drive. Talk about your mixed signals? I personally think it would be less confusing for your viewers if Out of Spec took this review down.
@@j3777 Ok,then the Nissan makes no sense for anyone eligible for the tax credit on the Tesla unless you are in the unique situation where the Aria’s smoother, quieter ride over the Tesla is super important to you, but at the same time, the Tesla’s Supercharger network availability on road trips isn’t important to you.
I’m still holding onto my Nissan Platinum+ AWD order. For us reservation holders from Dec ‘21, this top end trim still has the 2021 price of $59k and Nissan offered a “binding contract” before the Inflation Reduction Act was signed, which means I’ll be one of the few who still qualifies for the old $7,500 tax credit on an Ariya. At ~$52k, post tax credit, I think it’s a fair value. But not at $62k, with the higher MSRP of ‘23 and lacking a tax credit.
Charging speed, interior quality, low range/lack of modern efficiencies, likely low resale, etc. Looks of a car are a strong, subjective factor in our emotional decisions tho, so if you like, others likely will too. His locked in purchase price will help with resale, assuming Nissan eventually delivers on it!
VW Canada has very poor warranty support when required, our 2019 VW Beetle convertible had an issue with the passenger window not always lowering that bit it needs to clear the lip on the top. Dealer said it was the result of a dirty mechanism, I asked to see the dirt and why the inside of the the door would have enough dirt to affect the mechanism after 10,000 km and 6 months of use. Last time the car went to the dealer and the last VW I see in our life. My wife still likes the car and will continue driving the car 6 months a year but ID4 is a nonstarter for me. My LEAF hasn’t required unscheduled service in 3+ years and I still enjoy the car, Tesla has a Musk issue I can’t get over. It all depends on the bigger picture for me so I am more likely to choose the Nissan over the other two.
I never cared for the UI in a Tesla; and now that they dropped Radar from the set of sensors used, this makes it unacceptable. The ID4. Software is still problematic. There’re other options to chose from, though.
The Ariya has a sunshade, an opening sunroof, wireless Apple CarPlay, a heads-up display, rear seat shades…and the Model Y has NONE of that. Also, the Ariya is nearly as fast zero to sixty as the Model Y, and has higher ground clearance. And unlike Tesla, Nissan has never had an EV fire.
It's hard to watch this and not think of it as an outright attack on Nissan and the Nissan Ariya. Yes, it has shortcomings but in the big scheme of things when owning a electric car they are very minor. Also not everyone wants to drive their family around in a sportscar. The Ariya has obviously been designed for a refined drive for families (including pets) and not for the race track. Yes it came late to the party, yes it's expensive but to come to the conclusion that you should not buy the Ariya when it is a good car is disappointing from Out of Spec Guide.
It is not safe to drive more than two hours at a time. I have driven coast to coast five times, and at two hours, actually less, you start experiencing highway hypnosis, which is dangerous, which at 70 mph is 140 miles. I never drive my car until it is close to empty before taking a break. Talk to any defensive driving instructor and they will tell you the same. When I went through Navy boot camp in 1976 the Navy had started to require passing a defensive driving course because the military was experiencing more deaths due to traffic accidents annually than in modern combat action. Then every command was required to attend a defensive driving lecture annually before the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Just before I retired, my command lost a young sailor in her early twenties who died due to injuries suffered in an auto accidents.
Before revealing himself as the right-wing loon he is, I respected Musk, his business acumen and his extraordinary accomplishments. Now, I wouldn't take a Tesla if you gave me one. I'm not giving him one cent of my money.
Believe me, I agree _entirely_ with you about Elon Musk - but if I'm paying ~$50,000 for a car, that's going to be a HUGE purchase for me, so I can't let my opinion of the company's CEO factor into my decision. After all, I don't know who the CEOs of Nissan or VW or Ford or GM are or what their politics are. I don't care, and I'm not going to bother researching them. When I'm spending that kind of money on a car, all I'm going to consider is whether the car meets my needs, and whether I think I'm getting the best value for that enormous MSRP. From everything I've seen, the Tesla Model Y would be that car in this price range, and I'd buy it. I'd be buying a car from Tesla, not from Elon Musk. Musk will continue to be a billionaire jerk whether I buy a Tesla or not. My decision won't affect him at all, but it will affect me for the next ten or fifteen years, or however long I own the car.
Always have watched your videos and really enjoyed your work and reviews as they seem very honest and informative. This is just a bashing on the Ariya. It might have its shortcomings as a 1st gen model but it seems like you are just hating on it because it’s a Nissan. Sorry but this isn’t the review I’ve come to expect and like from OOS!
I chose the VW ID.4 over the Tesla Model Y for several reasons. However, had I done a little more homework and realized the reality of the charging network when traveling, I might have just gone with the plain looking Tesla. My ID.4 is my first EV and I love it! Way overstated the difficulties of charging at non Tesla stations. Would I like plug n charge. Absolutely, but taking out my phone and clicking in 2 or 3 places is hardly a massive inconvenience. So I agree to disagree on this issue
Good point for the few times I Have used ChargePoint; likewise, I unlocked my phone, swiped it and was charging. Easy-peasy and nice and easy....... Then I got charged a high fee 🤣😂 Too bad there are NO Electrify America (EA) station in Jackson, MS, USA 😞So much for FREE charging you can't get 😞 Back on topic, good point 🙂
You downplay the importance of ranged too much. Those of us in colder climates lose much of the rated range in the winter. A 275 mile summer range, which is much closer to the model, wise real world range, becomes 200 miles in the winter. that’s only 100 miles each way. In many areas of the country there isn’t a DC fast charger within a 100 mile radius. Range is and will be a very important issue until the infrastructure is better. I am in eastern Washington state and make 200 mile round trips to go skiing and go to college athletic events where there is only one fast charger available. If it is down, or there is a line, I would be in trouble if I didn’t have a mustang MachE. There are no Tesla superchargers in either of those directions. I travel. Stop saying you can go anywhere in a Tesla!
If you think the charging infrastructure close to Spokane, WA is inadequate then consider Idaho, Montana, Dakotas, Wyoming and if that is not enough to complain cross in Canada in the winter in the Great Praries. Even Kyle in a Tesla would not dare to drive in some areas in the winter. I always contradict Kyle about PHEVs and support Tom Mologney about those vehicles in some areas of North America. In those areas ANY EV is just for commute and a PHEV or a HEV is for long trips. In my family my wife commute with an EV, I go to work in a HEV since round trip can be longer than 200 miles. We use a PHEV for long trips. I see Teslas over there in the summer only.
I traded my Tesla Model 3 Performance in on an Ariya. While I agree on paper the Model Y is an objectively better car, I grew very tired of the central touch screen. When I’m in heavy traffic, I’m not comfortable poking around to find the right sub menu just to turn on my headlights. Also, the Ariya has some nice features that aren’t available on the Tesla at any price. To each their own, but I’m happy with my choice. I’ve had terrible luck with European reliability so the ID4 wasn’t even on my consideration list.
I have tested alot of evs included the TY, and the TY or the WW was not even on my short list. I chose the Ariya after extensive testing, with polestar 2 in a close second, other good ones were volvo c40/xc40, ford e-Mach. I dont trust the Koreans for longevity, and some others were to expensive. But i live in Northern Norway so awd and some other things are more importain for me, and the prize and tax is not the same.
Volkswagen just stiffed us existing reservation holders with their price increase and deletion of optioned features like the heat pump… not going through with purchase for such an unethical decision
If you’re only doing a road trip a couple of times a year, then why spend thousands of dollars for a car that will allow you to do that. It would be much cheaper to rent a car for those occasional trips. I have a Leaf that suits my daily needs. If I go away anywhere I rent. OK, charge times. Since I don’t use my Leaf for travel, I charge at home. So I don’t need an EV that charges in 15 minutes. So you pay thousands of $$ more for convenience.
It's hilarious when they talked about the Ariya's interior quality. Both Kyle and Coleton made it sounded like it is crap. It's true that it looks better than it actually feels with some of the plastic on the door panels. But how can it be true that the ID.4 and Model Y are any better? Those two cars are in fact crap in terms of material and build quality. Anyway, I don't disagree the fact that the Ariya isn't class leading in any EV specific category. But saying it is the WORST, that's just not a true statement. Mach E measures almost exactly the same as Ariya in all metrics from range, to price, to build quality, so they can't both be the WORST at the same time, right? Ariya has better range than the ID.4, so if you don't like Model Y, but range is important, then Ariya is one of the better options. You say the FWD is pointless and cheapens the car, sure if you must have a AWD because you live in snowy part of the world. But many EV owners are not, so the FWD actually makes sense. There are several other EVs out there like the Volvo C40 with higher price, lower range, older software, Ariya is a much more sensible option. Lyriq is very comparable option to the Ariya, similar range, but it is even more expensive and build quality also being better to look at than to touch. At the end of your video you wonder if you sounded too harsh, you don't. You just sounded very bias.
The best way to understand what they want to tell us is to take Ariya on the long trip. In that moment you will feel the pain...Suddenly you will realize the interior doesn't matter anymore.
I guess you choose mobile phones, by their charging time? I don't buy a shifty mobile, just because it's 10 min faster to charge. Or even worse buy a iphone😄 Of couse if you take long trip every other day, you be better of with a ice car. For me it's dumb to choose a car, because of the dc charging speed that i use a couple of times a year. The ride will be much more important to me, as well as the 22kw onbord ac charger.
Dudes you need to get real the Tesla has scratchy cheap door trims, a plain and boring interior, poor exterior fit & finish and feels really uninviting at all. You’re both clearly biased.

I've had my 2023 ID4 for two months. The software I interact with is Android Auto. It's on all the time. It's what I use for maps, music, podcasts, etc. And, I like it. Nice modern UI that gets regular updates. Tons of apps to choose from that get regular updates. (It would be the same story if I used Apple CarPlay.) The native ID4 software is just for occasional set-and-forget settings. I don't even interact regularly with the climate control since it keeps the cabin at the temperature I set it to. It's not that I'm avoiding the native software. It seems fine. But, for me, the software is not an issue. I'm happy with it.
