Pocket sized but insanely convenient, the Seastars quick release system from iFootage is a genius solution to a problem you didn't know you had.

I've backed ifootage's Cobra Strike 3 on Kickstarter, I can see this being a handy inclusion for that monopod. I plan to use this Seastar for my Platyball Head where I'll swap back and forth between my Manfrotto Neotec, Heipi Travel and soon to be added SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex tripod for my landscape work. I love options and this tool has that and so much more! Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Scott, you must have a prerelease or current production model. Just received my SeaStar from IFOOTAGE and the top plate does not have 3 security lockdown screws only a compression type ring surrounding the spring-loaded camera connector. Have to make sure you have the top plate tight with the camera. Nice in-depth review. IFOOTAGE makes great stuff.

Hi! Yep, that did actually end up happening haha. I like the pre-production version myself, but I guess as long as you make sure it's tight, it should be ok. I have to grab a few more soon for some new sliders I got :-P

Looks like a great quick release system, and I know iFootage is a good company but the price for such a thing would make it harder for someone to switch from his current Manfrotto or Arca-swiss especially if he has a lot of stuff... honestly I started with a Manfrotto tripod and than found out that arca-swiss is just more common, when I got my Peak Design capture (BTW, awesome device especially if you need to walk with heavy lens) I bought their dual pate which is compatible with both and it actually opened so many opportunities for me! arca-swiss heads and plates can be found very cheap on Amazon and on AliExpress so it will be much easier to switch to those instead... The only advantages I see here is that those are really low profile and that 2 screws in one method is much better than anything I saw so far. But still, nothing wins that moment that you go to shoot with a friend and his tripod already set and you want to take 1 photo with a tripod, you just put your camera in with the same arca-swiss which can be found almost anywhere...
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 4 года назад
For sure! The iFootage K5 head is manfrotto style which I love... but this is actually for under the head... like between the head and the legs of the tripod :) Then you can move the head itself onto a slider, or a car mount or anything nice and quick. The camera plate still remains a manfrotto (or arca swiss, whichever works for you), but this allows quick swapping of heads, sliders, jibs etc :)
@DimusTechIL
@DimusTechIL 4 года назад
@@ScottDumas Well you do have a point here, but now it's like another type of quick release in addition to the one you have... but maybe in case of taking the head between places is the advantage and main use here...
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 4 года назад
@@DimusTechIL Haha yeah... it's basically only useful for people who go between slider, tripod, jib etc and are always switching back and forth. I do that a lot so it does save a bit of frustration and time. Otherwise totally unnecessary though :)

I'm intrigued by this product. Your video assures me that, when properly mounted and secured, it will not add any slop or wobble. I agree the price is a wee bit high, as I will need extra top and bottom components to make full use of the system between my rigs (2 tripods, 1 monopod, slider, crane, teleprompter). This could easily add up to $250-300 for all the bits I would need to support all my rigs. Q: How much additional height does the system add to your rig? This can be an issue with matte boxes when mounted to a rail system. If I add this between my rail system and camera, the lens could be too high up to accommodate my matte box. I currently use inexpensive Manfrotto 401 plates with my rigs, and their low profile is not an issue. I presume the Seastar gizmo will add too much weight and height to work with my Ronin S gimbal.
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 4 года назад
Hi! Yeah, they're definitely stable and secure :) I'm not sure I understand how you're thinking to use them between the rail system and the camera though... I think in that place the Manfrotto plate would still be the way to go. Essentially, these wouldn't/shouldn't replace manfrotto or other actual camera plates... but instead go between the tripod/monopod and the head, or the between the slider and the head you mount on it, etc. So, for example, if I have one Komodo K5 head and want to go back and forth between a slider and a monopod with it, I'd use the Seastars to do that quickly and easily, but the camera would still mount onto the K5 head with the manfrotto style plate. In any case, it adds about 26.7mm height, according to their website and weight just under 250g Hope that helps? But let me know if not :)

Hi. At 2:35, you mentioned about 3 screws under the top plate to make sure the plate does not move but I do not have those on the 3 Seastars that I bought. Looks like yours were pre-production models and iFootage eventually decided to remove this feature. Any clue why they would have done so?

I just saw someone made the same remark in below comments. I am not the only one.
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 4 года назад
Yep- and I wish they had not done this... honestly it's one of the reasons I am hesitating to buy a couple more. iFootage, if you see this, I HIGHLY recommend you bring back the screw design. This takes a lot of torque when removing the quick release, so a solid connection there is absolutely critical.

How would 1 screw on the quick release plate prevent whatever it is attached to from spinning. compared to a 2-screw Manfrotto plate?
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 2 года назад
The original design had little screws that would push against the surface of whatever you mounted to it, giving a more effective friction fit but I think the official versions for sale did away with that so it's just a friction fit now. If you get it tight it's not a huge issue but I did honestly like the original/preproduction design better.

My comment is that they have missed a huge thing. You can't put down your camera on a table or flore without tipping the hole camera, or a set with a cage. In that case you have to buy an extra base plate for each. I where on a consert where I had two tripods, two cameras but I needed to change them in between in different scenarios. An 500 mm lens,(back and forth with a extender 1,4) one 300 mm and obut the same and one 70-200 mm. Videofilming for stills. I was a demanded to that. So something stable under the topplate for a lens or camera when changing or "park" the set-up. That is my comment and hasitation for buying this "studio-moore- a like-kit" . Loved it at first but don't have the last thing solved. (I cant have any videohead below, with a wobbly bottom) To heavy also. I need a flat "dummy" for a stable "camera put down".

Hi Scott! My workflow is a little different from most of your photos and demos. My camera/gimbal combo ( BMPCC 4K / ZHIYUN Crane Lab 3 ) either sits on a DIGITALFOTO Thanos II support WITHOUT a fluid head, or it sits on Manfrotto Nitrotech N12 Video Head (see below link) sitting on a tripod or slider. Since I don’t want a fluid head added to the Thanos (added weight and not needed) it doesn’t seem your typical mounting suggestions would work for me. Am I missing something? The only way I can see using the Seastar is to mount it to a Manfrotto quick release plate between the fluid head and the base of the gimbal. That works but I’m worried about stability and rotational shifting, as I don’t know where or how the “locking screws” are going to grab the Manfrotto plate. Can you suggest a better adapter or arrangement? Also the Seastar's locking screw on the quick release plate (NOT the base plate) is outside of the circumference it would engage with the Zhiyun Crane 3 lab handle. Any suggestions on how to work around this?

I own ifootage’ s mini jib, ishark slider and two of their monopods, all of which are fantastic quality and design. However, even though this new product seems to be of the same pedigree, I shall not replace my present Manfrotto quick release solution for this; reason being that it is way too large in diameter and would not be suitable for to be used on everything. I go from cages to tripods to gimbals to monopods to jibs to sliders and my motion control rigs all with the same mount. Unfortunately, this system would only be suitable for some of those applications so for my needs it is not universal enough! If they make a smaller and more compact version then that would be another story! 😉🙏🏾
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 4 года назад
Sorry for the misunderstanding, this is not a quick release for your camera, like the manfrotto plates would be... instead it would go between the K5 head and tripod legs, or between the jib and the legs, or the K5 head and the slider etc... so you can swap out those setups really quick. But still, using Manfrotto plates on your camera would not change.
@EugeneMaynard
@EugeneMaynard 4 года назад
I understood that Scott but what I was pointing out was that if one needs a truly universal quick release system, it is better to use something that can be used on every item you use in production. I can put every combination of screw base tripod head, ball head, camera on any monopod, tripod, slider, jib and even my gimbal that I own. So I never have to think twice about what works together and never have to unscrew any mount at any time, thus increasing the efficiency of any job.🙏🏾

In a word (two actually) Arca Swiss. The simplest and most versatile system for still, video, cine cameras. Non-proprietary and very inexpensive.
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 4 года назад
This isn't a camera plate system though- it's for between the tripod legs and the head, or tripod legs and the slider, or between the slider and the head you mount on it, etc. You'd still use your arca-swiss or manfrotto etc head and camera plates.
@AustralianImage
@AustralianImage 4 года назад
@@ScottDumas That just seems like doubling up. I also use a Micro 2 slider (can't get the motor as yet) and use an Arca Swiss plate under the slider (so I can tilt the slider as needed on the fluid head). I use Arca Swiss clamps on my fluid heads in place of the horrid Manfrotto 501 plates or on my monopod screw, and anything else I happen to use as a support. I'd hate to attach that device between my 100mm ball adapter and fluid head on my main tripod, which comes off in one piece and can be replaced with another insert (like the Gitzo system). For someone that uses a traditional tripod and attaches a leveler mechanism between the tripod and head, this adapter just adds another component to the collection. That's not ideal.

If you are buying 2 of them, it is $2 cheaper to get 2 Baseplate and a single 2 Plate bundle than getting 2 Standard Bundle sets.

Hi Scott. Again me :D....my first thaught was....if this cost 28 euros it would be awesome....79 is a lot. ... Nad now my question. If you mount slider(center of the slider) with this to a tripod without a head....straight to tripod. Is it going to cause some movement of the slider. I mean the movement which make horizon off on both sides and straight in the center. Thank you.
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 4 года назад
Hi! In all honesty, the price was a bit higher than I'd hoped as well. I mean, I get it- it's super solid and probably over-engineered haha, in a good way of course. But, for video use it's just rock solid so it may be worth it anyway. As for the slider question... if your slider itself already sags off horizon on it's own (a lot do, especially longer ones when mounted in the center only) then that of course won't change, but I haven't found that this mount introduces any extra off-horizon-ness due to looseness or movement of the mount. So if you're ok so far, this shouldn't change anything :)
