He was clean by then. Nor was he ever an addict. His heroin addiction only lasted a few years in the mid seventies.

@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 He also did a lot of cocaine in the 70's though. It's well known he and Bowie were going through lot of coke when they started hanging out together.

@@lucasm3879 For a brief time like I said. Then they cleaned up together and unless you know better than them, by their own admission they were sober and clean more than half the week by this time and would indulge in drugs maybe twice a week.

He wasn't putting on an act. He's a backwoods country boy with terrible social skills, yet he's intelligent, heartfelt and direct. Also might be under the influence of cocaine here which would explain the ego trip.

Honestly think he's just putting it on. He would do crazy stuff on stage for attention and it worked but in a TV interview enviroment you are limited in what you can do to get a reaction. Also got to remember this is the 70's so people being rude or arrogant or pretentious and not caring on TV was a new thing and would be a lot more intresting to people than it would be nowadays. He seems very nice and down to earth in most his other interviews and stuff he's done especially in the past 30 years, I'm sure he knew what he was doing during this interview. Then again iirc he was still having drug issues around the time of this interview so that may play a part in his attitude.
