This is the last of three (3) uploads on the restoration of the Model T coils. Mike Vaughn of Lincoln, NE demonstrates the steps necessary to select coils for restoration and then all of the restoration steps.
I LOVE These Little AWESOME Cars! I have 8 Cars (24,25 Dodge`s, 1931 Plymouth, 1924 Oldsmobile, 23 Model T Sedan, 25 Chevrolet Coupe, 1915 REO, And a 1928 AA Truck!, And 3 1920`s Cars I am restoring for Friends! Sometimes Fun! And Sometimes a LIVING HELL! But I LOVE these 1920`s Cars!
The kids and I are working on a "new" model T. this is our first that uses the original coils. it's running, but when it stops I can't tell if it's wrong fuel mixture or if the coils could just use a little adjustment. is there a way to adjust the point gap and spring tension without a coil tester? both the fun projects and ecct versions are fairly pricey. being a dumb schmuck, I don't mind the extra work of doing something the hard way if it can save me money.
Do you have a copy of the Ford Service Manual? If so, look on page 239 for "Testing and Adjusting the Coil Units," if not, you really should get a copy. The vendors have them... here is one of them... www.snydersantiqueauto.com/model-t-ford-service
Awesome explanation of EVERYTHINGi was wondering about. Thankyou. One question. What part # or capacitor "value" do you use as replacement? NZ based 26 tudor here and learning in a practical manner now i have a T. Finally. Thankyou again for the informative 3 part series. Very helpful
I am restoring a 1923 Model T Ford 4 door Sedan here in Ola, Arkansas! Your video on these coils is very APPRECIATED! The new Condenser`s Look small compared to the New ones! Sort of makes Me think it would not be powerful enough! My Question is about My Magnito! I Replaced My Magnito with a totally Rebuilt one, And the spacing .012 is correct I believe! (If not ! Please let Me know!!) But they are all out of wack! There are only 4 Bolts to shim up! So I have some nice and close, And some a little farther apart! (I may have My desamil in the wrong place, So please forgive Me!) The farthest one is around .022! Will this still work on My Car? Twas lots of fun installing this! I lost 22 LBS from Putting the Flywheel on and off, to get as close as I did! I believe that the rebuilt Mag, May be slightly warped! Thank`s!
roybo1930 take a look at modelt-tips.com/Engine/15.html and then modelt-tips.com/Engine/15b.html. The gap between the magnets and the field coil should be between 0.022” and 0.0040. On a new build I shoot for 0.025” but that is with crankshaft thrust in great shape with only 0.004” clearance. If you have more thrust end play you need to consider that in your clearance. You don’t want the magnets so close that they could hit the field coil. We are in Russellville, maybe we can meet sometime after this COVID-19 Social Distancing.
Would you consider doing a video on wheel alignment? I have a 26T that has the infamous "Death Wobble". Not sure if it is alignment or worn parts. Many thanks!
