Impressive circuit

Thank you for another great video! You explained the functions of the circuit very well. But, I would really like to see a proper schematic. Here's an example of why... I heard you say that the HEI is driven with a pulse. I t-h-i-n-k I heard you say, later, that the pulse is 5 volts in amplitude. I saw what I t-h-i-n-k is a LM7805 on your control board. However, that TO-220 package m-i-g-h-t be a MOSFET. The emphasis is for fun, but it makes the point that the circuit could be better communicated with a schematic. I guess the question remains... What is the TO-220 package on the board? This is a great project! Useful, very doable, will save the repair-person a buck on equipment and time on the repair. You have made a valuable contribution to the DIY community. Much appreciated!

I left it up to the viewers to pick their clock source. Most will probably want to use a microcontroller or a circuit with different RPM range. If you want the schematic of the circuit in the video it is described in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tyZVSL5F26I.html or you can check the 555 timer data sheet for an astable clock source. The TO-220 package is a 7806 voltage regulator powering the 555 timer. I used 6 volts as the 555 timer output is not rail to rail. It is something I just do but a 7805 will also work.

This is great. I am using same exact HEI module in my 1964 Ford Falcon! It would be great if you can come up way to use GM LS1 or LS2 ignition coil. Coil has in-built igniter that is ECU controlled and very compact. Dwell begins when ECU signal goes high (more than 4V). Spark Event occurs when ECU signal goes low (less than 1 V). Recommend Dwell Time: 3.5mS @ 14.4V. I tested it with simple 12v on/off switch and it works but it would need to be controlled the distributor which has a magnetic pickup and puts out a sinewave. Can I use a rectifier bridge (1N4007) without capacitor to simulate DC high and low?
@0033mer
@0033mer 10 месяцев назад
1964 was a good year for the Falcon. The sine wave variable reluctance (VR) signal has to changed into a square wave, and then find the zero crosssing that causes the spark event. It would be easier to go back to the points/condenser distributor which has a defined on/off signal and just use a logic circuit to trigger the coil.
@wahidkapadia5652
@wahidkapadia5652 10 месяцев назад
@@0033mer I actually though about using points distributor. In my 64 Falcon, I have 5.0 V8 out of Ford Explorer with aftermarket roller cam. I would be have purchase new distributor and change the gear for roller cam. The 1N4007 are inexpensive and are few dollars on Amazon and I figure its worth trying. Can I use a rectifier bridge (1N4007) without capacitor to simulate DC high and low? Also lots of other people may like to the LS coil/igniter if there was a simpler solution without replacing the distributor.

If you use a bridge rectifier you will double the frequency of the VR sine wave and get multiple firings. You have to trigger on the zero crossing of the VR signal which is the vertical portion of the signal. Check this video where I have shown a screenshot of the VR signal. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wkY6aDSOSgk.html You can use a MAX9924 IC to decode the zero crossing of the waveform.

I did some reading. The MAX9924 would work. However, can I use Half Wave Rectifier ?

The circuit is a 555 timer in astable mode. Check on line for many example circuit diagrams. It is similar to the 555 circuit in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tyZVSL5F26I.html

Which of the part in the circuit (555 timer) to adjust to make the dwell time a little longer ? I think i did this circuit based on your other video but the dwell time too fast. Increase the resistor value or add more cap will make more dwell time?
@0033mer

Yes, increase the resistor or capacitor value until you get your desired result.

Do you have a video step by step more detailed on exactly how to assemble this tester? Or how can I get one assembled already?? Thx MK Florida, US

nice job, I wonder how you got rid of the back EMF of the coil when it is disconnected - or maybe the HEI module has a snubber circuit inside it that takes care of the problem
@0033mer
@0033mer 2 года назад
Inside the module is a MC3334 IC driving a 400 volt NPN Darlington transistor with a 350 volt Zener clamp for back EMF transients. Check out Fig 6 for schematic. datasheet.octopart.com/MCZ3334EF-Freescale-Semiconductor-datasheet-12533592.pdf

This is great stuff and has piqued my curiosity, specifically at 8:00 on the video where you use a Tiny2040 to read RPM and then program the advance curve. I know very little about arduinos and other microcontroller boards but I know I want to! Could you please share some more information on how you used the 2040 to alter timing curves? Would it also be possible to introduce rev-limiting capabilities as well? Thank you!
@0033mer
@0033mer Год назад
The RP2040 is simulating a Pazon ignition module for motorcycles. ( check online for details) The RP2040 is monitoring the RPM using Tach pulses, so it knows the engine speed. A pickup (VR) on the cam will trigger at 38 degrees BTDC. The RP2040 will calculate a delay before the spark signal is sent. The shorter delay the more advance. With these input signals a custon advance curve can made. Check out my video on variable reluctance triggers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wkY6aDSOSgk.html

hello sir, at 4:20 you show a diagram, where primary and secondary are switched via points to groud. I am not sure that is correct, the secondary (High Voltage side) is always connected to ground. Please let me know!
@0033mer
@0033mer 3 года назад
There is a condenser (capacitor) connected across the breaker points ( not shown in the diagram ) which supplies a ground to the secondary high voltage side when the points open, enabling a spark to jump to ground.
