Now that turned out great mate, that nice authentic HUON PINE, from the little island of Tasmania that I have had for 25 years….. was the icing on the cake. Did you burn the live edge? Cheers ⚓️🫡🇦🇺
Hello from Montreal Canada. Every time you speak of woodworking and pallets I feel the exact same. Seeing trashy free wood become something beautiful is truly satisfying. Makes you feel good... on the inside!
Haters gonna hate, no matter what you make. I have never used a pallet but obviously enjoy the methods, humor, and projects. Your no waste attitude is the way to be. The sliding door cabinet is really cool project.
I did one two-drawer table with just one giant pallet. My work isn’t a ‘hobby’ and I tracked my time. So two things turned out: First, the money I ‘saved’ on ‘free’ lumber took me enough time that when converted to dollars I could have bought clean, fresh lumber for a mere $25- or $30 more. Well worth my time. Second, it turns out that after vacuuming, wire brushing, sanding, then vacuuming again that my $225 glue-joint obviously lost its razor sharp edge within a few cuts. So overall it cost me about $60 extra to use suboptimal wood. Not going to do that again!!!!
Thanks for what you do and post Mark. I started with wall shelves and moved on to shoe racks, a plate rack, pirate chest (with a coopered top). So far, the last project was a bathroom sink vanity. You have been a big influencer in my hobby. Carry on M8. Take care & stay safe.
I get all the free pallets I could ever want from my work. Some of it is trash but a lot of it is really pretty. The guys have started saving the pretty ones for me!! Love your builds!!
Just about everything I've learned about woodworking I've learned using pallet wood and I have always given exactly zero f's what others think. I have a productive shop now filled with benches, cabinets, drawers, jigs and just about anything you can think of all made of free pallet wood. It has been all free and taught me so much. I would advise anyone to get into pallet wood even if to get a new perspective on it.
Nothing fancy to say but….. thanks for the time and effort you put into your videos and the encouragement you give to us all to give it a go. Cheers….. Pete
Did just that, I got started...! Collected pallets, started to break them down, it's tough at first as each new step is just that, new, never done by you before. Pallet buster makes it so much easier, and while I had a table saw, the thicknesser was a welcome birthday present. Latest addition was a cyclone dust extractor I made, and I'm into the first hall table. I have other things in my head to make, and I see new projects in every day settings. But the focus it to make and sell, aim to cover my costs, then carry on. Thanks for the motivation 👍
Thank you mark. I have made hallway tables, floating shelves and coffee tables and more! All because of you. Now I have something to do during these long Alaska winters.
Thank you for making me feel, "normal." I just recently started my woodworking journey, and all I can swing, right now is pallet wood. You're 100 % correct that it's WAY too easy to let the sensationalized elitism of some social media presences, make you feel bad or "less than" by using pallets. But I've already tapped into something new, in my heart, with woodworking, and I truly appreciate your positivity and words of encouragement. Thank you, again.
So glad I watched this. I wasn't going to. It popped up and I'm at work and thought, I'm just too busy. Almost swiped it off my screen... Then ...by some weird chance in the chaos of space time. I managed to get a bit of time to scratch myself and saw your upload. I've been a subscriber for ages. I have some tools and wanted to get into it. But just have no time. After watching this mate. I'm going to make time. So I guess that means. I've just started. Crazy thing, I even live in the same town as you.
I don’t know how you do it but every new video is more entertaining and heartwarming than the last one. Congratulations on another amazing project! Love the result!
Hey Mark I just want to say thank you, between you and Jasper i have learned soooo much and am taking the first step in just getting started. I've already started collecting and breaking down pallets. I have watched just about all of your videos and many of which i have watched over and over again. I love all the work you do with pallets and i honestly love seeing you mess up on projects. It helped me realized how its okay to mess up on projects and has helped me realize that i can work on my own projects as well. I just glued up my first small slab this weekend about 1 3/4" thick. Need to make a few adjustments but it was very satisfying to do. So thank you for everything you do and hopefully here soon ill be starting a channel as well showing off some of the unique ideas i have for pallet projects.
I built my shop cabinets years ago from a huge Motorola pallet box back when I worked for them. It felt amazing when my Dad told me how impressed he was with what I built. I still use pallets when I find a good one. Love the tambour doors!
I am in the process of accumulating more workshop tools both honed and power… I am new to woodworking and love your philosophy in regards to reusing wood and pallets… love the tips and tricks and out side the box ideas.
I just got started! Had a jobsite saw in my shop for a year and fired it up a few times, but it always scared the hell out of me. A few rookie mistake kickback incidents didn’t help. Wasn’t hurt though, just shit myself. Yesterday I faced my fear and got cracking making a house for the feral cats that live on our property. Biggest hurdle is not having a jointer. So I fabbed one up using a miter slot on the table saw. And holy shit it’s the best thing ever! Just turning wonky pallet wood into squared off, straight pieces… it’s damned near orgasmic!
love what you said early on..."I make furniture from pallet wood, not pallet wood furniture" this is big thing. There is a tremendous difference between the 2
Pallet wood was my entry into woodworking. It was a low cost way of figuring out if I even liked the hobby…. The more I realized I loved it, the more money I invested into things!
I've used bits and bobs of pallet built raised bed in the garden, outside table, bench, compost bin all with pallet. But never took palette reuse as far as you do. So much work go into your creation i'm a big fan!
Small tip. Could be helpful if it suits you. When using the pneumatic denailer (I use the same one you have) I use a bucket to catch nails too and I find it useful to have it partially filled with water so the nails don't hit the other nails or debris and bounce back out. Water slows the down enough to stay in the bucket.
I knew that I needed to reWATCH this video. I have a little router, and needed to create flat stuff... I also have 2 pieces of angle iron which you just demonstrated how to make them into a rail system. PERFECT for me!
Mate, it's a beautiful sunny Sunday in my neck of the woods and just when I didn't think today could get any better I was able to sit on my back porch and attend the church of Dainsey! Keep preaching brother, I for one am a convert to the pallet woodworking path! BTW, amazing little piece you created there! Cheers mate!
Just came across your channel today and I've already subbed. I love watching woodworking... creation of new items, restoration of old items, modern twists on pieces, even woodturning into bowls and vases, etc. I loved woodshop in 8th grade (I'm a woman, btw) and am just at the time in my life when I may be able to start playing with working on projects myself. I've done a few minor things over the years, but now that I'm just about done raising my family, I may carve out a workshop in our shed and see what I can do. ;) Thanks for the great idea of starting with free wood and all the reasons I should.
One of the first videos I saw was Jasper Makes, which after a few videos led me to you. I started woodworking about 8 to 9 months ago and it was the two of you that made me start my whole woodworking journey using pallet wood. Thank you for showing me an easy way to get wood without paying for it, if it wasn't for that tidbit of information I wouldn't have been able to build the things I have due to the lack of funds to buy wood. I do however, use a mixture of pallet wood and store bought wood for my projects but it's nice to know that if I don't have the money to buy it then I can still create with pallet wood that I might not be able to purchase. Like you said, you do you! I also hope to be on RU-vid soon! I still have to figure out how to get good sound and I can't use my phone because it's full and would take days if not weeks to clear off to use, maybe eventually. I'm also waiting on a laptop that's being given to me but I'm so close to being online! You guys are amazing and I just wanted to say thank you for showing me a viable way to keep doing what I love! Stay safe and Happy Building 💯😁
That’s awesome mate. I played the phone storage shuffle for many years 🤣 I still film on my phone and now send to my computer. Least you’ll be able to unload the phone once the laptop arrives! Good luck with the journey
Somewhere near you there will be a company selling/installing doors and windows... all the doors they take out go to waste. Beautiful straight grained, tropical, stable, planed square TEAK. I can't use what I get, fast enough, yard is full of it. Great recycling, You will never be sorry for knocking on that door (!)
Well done Dainzey! i just got started (on youtube) and am having a blast! wood turning and basic wood projects. you are an inspiration to many including my self JUST.... GET... STARTED
I just got started three years ago. Currently making an octagonal tombola for a Carnival. My very first pallet wood project was a wooden feature wall in my sons bedroom - it has colour changing backlights. He uses it every day. I now rescue wood from Shitbook Market Place - mainly scrap hardwoods. I'm just doing me. As always, your content is inspirational. I love the community you have with other content creators too. Keep up the work and stay safe in that 🚁
Mark - a few weeks ago I spent my lawnmowing money on a brand new table saw thanks to your "Just get started" video. Because it was my own cash the Manager couldn't say anything. Then a shedload of applets appeared on local Ebay which got trailered home. I've just been on holiday in Italy so am about to start building stuff!. I already built a tool bench, shoe rack, bird box and bird table. Thanks a ton!
you have great ideas and up cycling, I've made picture frames and watch boxes from pallet wood myself, and the effort is satisfying I've had luck in finding redwood. I love your attitude.
Hi Mark I am an Aussie just like you .Ive retied from working for other people & Im venturing into my pashion of woodworking . Ive tinkered over the years making things with wood from pallets as i had easy access to then through my work. Ive looked at many youtube videos on Funiture made from pallets & found that your vidoes explaining how you started have been a Insparation keep up the good work & i for one Em looking forword to watching many more.
That was cool! I’m working on putting my shop together and I’m drawing inspiration from your videos. Soon I want to show you some of the things I’ve done. I thought about what I wanted, then I got started. Thank you.
Great video as always. Thankyou for passing on your motivation and passion for making. Not sure I would have started without you giving me the confidence to just get started. As someone who genuinely has no idea what he's doing, cheer mate. Hopefully you can make it down to the makers meetup so I can shout you a few beers ;)
Awesome work mate, can’t believe you did tambour,I really want to have a go at it, or do something with curves. Been slack lately with other things going on, but I will get started eventually 😁
Love your work mate, I'd love to see you do a comparison video of a pallet wood Vs store bought wood build, exact project with a price Vs time and finished product
Gawdamighty, but I love watching your videos. I love scavenging crap and turning it into something new and useable. You have taken that skillset to a whole 'nother level, and I am grateful. I'm an American living in Portugal re-starting my shop from absolute scratch. Thank you for reminding me I don't have to start with store-bought. Question: what are you using to blow the nails out? Thanks.
I love everything about your work. While I don't use pallets often, I do try and make as much as I can from recycled timber for all the same reasons. Broken furniture, stuff in council cleanups, so on. You know those stakes councils use to support tree saplings along the side of the road? When the tree grows and no longer needs the stake, you think the council comes around and collects them? Of course not. The stakes end up on the footpath or in the street. So I collect them. Made a side table for my living room earlier this year out of garden stakes. And think about that; a tree grows up, is cut down with sole the destiny to become support for other trees. But before it ends up in the tip or rotting in the gutter, I step in and give it one last purpose, which is a place of honour as furniture in my house for the rest of my life.
Greeting from SA. Mental health improves greatly from such a hobby, I found turning (when I was still doing it) very peaceful. Unfortunately, and ironically, a decline in MH, has stopped me from doing anything, as a lack of enthusiasm does more than affect your desire to do, but also to create...and think! However, after quite some time, ie well over 12 months 'absent', I am planning a comeback...and a big one at that! After all, I have a LOT to catch up on! Shortly before my 'decline', I was getting prepped for some major projects for my side hustle, so so stock, tools etc were accumulated...and then it all stopped dead in its tracks! A few sales from Timbecon recently are helping to get me further enthused, and to do some bigger jobs. "In for a penny...", as the old saying goes!
Very cool video. And very will said, especially the last few points. Excercise being the highest when I also use hand plainers to processnthe boards. So keep them videos coming
Awesome job Mark. You are my second favourite woodworking channel (Woodshop Junkies😁) . Definitely my favourite pallet timbertreewoodlumber channel. I have only made some pine boxes for the missus to paint, so far, from the stacks of pallets I collect from solar panels. I'm off to the garage now to start stripping some pallets I've been saving. Sunday morning thicknessing seems a good payback for the neighbour's dogs keeping me awake
Aloha Mark! when i first discovered pallets my health was in a bad way and so i had a very limited income.... ok i was broker than broke lol. Making something out of pallets was the only way i could afford furniture! i even reused the nails! once i made a few things i started looking for other people on the interweb for inspiration. thats when i found u! i said hey this guy is really bringing the the best out of this beat up trashed up wood! like to the next level! Followed! It was cool to see someone else on a similar journey of pallet wood discovery and ignoring all the noise from the negative head waggers and lip flappers. i started finding free broken furniture and repairing them and adding pallet wood i processed. it helped my physical and mental health and it did great things for my bank account lol. Mahalos for u being u Mark! 😄😄😄
Thanks Mark for your inspiration. Just starting out. Started with a skanky pallet & turning it into a multi strip cutting board. It’s actually starting to look like something. Cheers
I scored big today. Picked up some old wooden bedframes with lovely straight slats just laying on the side of the road. Hall way entrance table leg thingys just waiting to be made and screwed to pallet wood tops. I don't have a jointer, so these are a massive bonus. Love your work. Now that I've started I see wood everywhere and the possibility of what it could become once I get it home. Cheers.
No better way to start a Monday than watching your latest production 👍. This usually is followed by reviewing some earlier creations which, like many others, just got me started. Taking early retirement (61) was the best thing I’ve ever done. Second only to the new woodwork addiction 😁. Thanks for your motivational content mixed with excellent humor. Cheers Pete' New Zealand.
Love what you did what that. I'm not too keen on taking pallets apart but I do like free wood. I live close to quite a few stores that have pallets around and can probably get some for free. Might have to pay a couple bucks for some. My daughter knows a place where they take the pallets apart and just sell you the lumber for cheap.
Mark I just wanted to say thank you for all of the videos you make. I recently just bought my first house and have been tackling DIY renovations. Kitchen cabinets are on the list and intimidating to get to, however your content has made me realize how many amazing items can be made from pallet wood. This has gotten me into breaking down pallets and starting to practice with the wood. I never knew it would be as easy as it is. I'm going to build a lot of pallet projects into my house. I may even start a youtube channel of my projects.
Love your videos! Will say though, recycling wood (not pallets but reclaimed and such) has many times cost me more than purchased wood in saw, bandsaw, planer and jointer blade from hitting the nails and junk the metal detector miss! As a note, heavily rusted, 100+ year old nails don’t set off many metal detectors but toast blades
Marvelous piece, Mark! Having the end trays in the "top", allows you to use it in either configuration. Some will like the live edge as the bottom, and some will like the live edge as the top. always give the people options. I know it's for your personal use, but now you have the option to change the look and still have the function! Keep on "Doing You" and let the haters take a long walk off a short pier(jetty)!
I watched you with your pallet project and got a great idea. I get pallets from work. They're painted either all orange or all blue. And, they're well made. Nice and straight and all exactly the same size. I just take them home, pull them all apart and sort the boards. Then, I sell them as pallet hardwood... I can do about four each day in a few hours. I'm making a good $5-$6 for every pallet!
I love your attitude and your videos. I'm on my own wee journey with woodworking and keep coming back to your channel for a boost. As you Aussies say, goodonya!
I get some awesome pallets from work, they are 4'x8' and solid oak. Laminate sheets come on them. Out of those I get 3 - 2×4s, 2 - 1x6s, and 4 - 1x4s. I also pallets from Corian counter top material. Those pallets are 31"×12'. Out of those I GET 2 - 12' 2 1/2"×3 1/4" white oak or cherry and 18 - 31"×1"×3 1/2" white oak, red oak or cherry. All beautiful free hardwood.
An add on here. I'm in Saskatchewan Canada and I love your work and videos. This particular project you made is very cool. I'm going to have to try something like that sometime. And because of you, wonky as a donkey and thicknesser are now regularly used in my vocabulary...very cool seeing your son building too. Keep up the great work and giving new life to these pallets.
turned 30 this year n decided to give a new hobby a go, thanks for the entertaining videos i must have gone through 20 of yours by now, you've definitely given me lots of inspiration to just get out there and start trying to make something! Keep up the good work :)
Ive been saving pallets for years using them only sparingly while trying to find direction on how to utilize them to the best. Your videos have been truly inspiring for me. Ive made a few pieces over the years but have always felt over my head. I always seem to over complicate things, your videos bring me back down to the simplification of it all. I love your videos mate!!!!
