Being a Massey man, I have to say the 66 series tractor in my opinion was the best tractor you could buy. No one compared to them as far as dependability and most of all, durability. The Dt series engine was bullet proof and a fantastic design. Just a fantastic tractor. Wish I had one to play with!! They sound Great with a straight pipe too! Great video!!

Yea like I said, I have a tractor buying problem. I would like to add a 1066 to the collection someday.

I currently have a 1086 but have experience with an 1135. I find the operation of the 10 a little more frustrating than the 1135. I found road farming easier with the MF but the IH is much easier to keep maintained. Until I saw this video I didn't think shift on the fly was even possible on the 86 series.

We ran 966, 1066, 1466 for many years then upgraded to three 1586’s in 1976 then a year or two later added a 4586. We kept the 966 and 1066 for smaller jobs. The 4586 ended up with a Cummins swap from the IH V8. If the 66 and 86 tractors had the Deere front axle’s and transmissions, they could have ruled the market!

I appreciate your video as I've worked on many IH tractors years ago working for a CASE IH Dealership. One thing I came across which you may or may not have is the injector tubes leaking and removal without the correct tooling can be very difficult. These injector tubes can cause many issues and they did change a couple times. I have an engine where they were seized into the cylinder head and this probably due to not using coolant but also because it's rare you ever need to change them. 👍🤠🇦🇺

Man I ran a fleet of 66 series international tractors at one time and I will have to say they were tough and very dependable . Had 2-766 , 2-966 , 1-1466 and a 1456 working at the same time and they gave me great service . I've slowly switched to john deere tractors for better parts and service in my area but have nothing but good things to say about the service the international tractors gave me . Thanks for sharing with us buddy .

Great videos. You can't beat the 66 series tractors. You said a mouth full about the shifting on those 86 series. I hate the way they shift and the way the cabs are it sucks looking over to see the draw bar trying to hook up to something. You did bring up alot of good points about what can go wrong on those tractors. We got a 966 and the front end is really wore and needs rebuilt.

I really want to get a 1066 someday, but I already bought my yearly tractor! I did quite a few front axles. If you take the time to rebuild it, it should last a while. It’s nice when you can go in 4H and stay in your lane!

I am a Deere guy through and through. 70 - 8R I've driven and worked on them all throughout the years. But I must give credit where credit is due. My dad has had a 966 ever sense I can remember, and it has always impressed me on how robust it is. 0°F dead of winter she would fire up like his deere did at 70°F. No Either, heated shop, or even being plugged in.

Still have & use 766, 856, 1026, 1486, 656... hard to believe these girls are pushing 50 years old, I remember when they were new and came out. Late 60’s & 70’s were the hay days of IH, I remember the flyers we would bring home from dealership & they would cover the kitchen table & the lamp stands by the couch....Man does time fly...

Good video. I was surprised you did not mention anything about the coolant filter for some of the early 66 series id not have them and had problems with cavitation of the sleeves. Also about the IPTO shaft in the clutch about stripping out with a lot of PTO work and loosing all hydraulics.
@PAFarms
@PAFarms 6 лет назад
Yea I’m going to have to go to Part 3. I forgot about the air conditioning not working in them, but you are right on the input shaft. It was standard to replace them on every clutch install. Have seen them that they were almost stripped.

Wanted to pass on a big thanks for the pt 1 and 2 videos. Very informative. Also want to say thanks for not going on a profanity laced rampage like some of the other vlogger's do. Not that I have virgin ears mind you, but it distracts from staying on topic. One question tho, did you do the engine overhauls yourself? Or at a dealership shop. Just wondering where you got the frame supports or if you made them yourself.

Grease the front axle every day not every 20 or 50 hours. There are a lot of parts on those axles. I grease my AC 7050 every day I use it and it has a very stout simple front axle so I think it's a must to grease those IH axles religiously.

good information .. thank you.. I have a question... i have a 886 international i have had on a cattle farm for two years.. one of the two issues have slowly come to a problem.. the first is the lowering of the throttle in the cab to kill the engine has got so bad it wont kill the engine.. i have made adjustments on the cable and it appears to be the bosch pump... even now when i force the throttle lever forward by hand at the pump it wont shut the engine off.. I have to pull the bottom lever back to stop the engine completely... any ideas would be appreciated.. the other is after it warms up for about 30 minutes the clutch appears to still be slightly engaged .. the gears continue to spin while tractor is completely stopped and clutch pedal is on the floor... oh ya .. the clutch booster, as you described in your video, has about 1/4 inch of play where its mounted to the cab i noticed the TA is just disconnected.. pin was pulled where it is just forward of the cab.. i don't need a TA for any reason, but im sure there is a RED farmer out there that will have great words of wisdom.. Thank You for your help

You haven't even scratched the surface on the problems of the 86 series tractors. International was in financial trouble during the construction of this series plus the 88 series. After years of spending all my profit on these red tractors, I finally wised up and bought green. The 86 series tractors I just went from one issue to the next. Every year there was always something failing or breaking. Engines, transmissions, radiator, hydraulic system and the list goes on.

Although I grew up Deere and I own Deere, I could never get used to the tranny in IH. We currently have Deere, MF and Agco. Maybe one day we will own a IH, seriously want a 5-674 for road travel.
@PAFarms
@PAFarms 6 лет назад
I can respect that. A lot of guys stay loyal to what they grew up with. We had IH on our farm so that’s why I stay with it. If you are looking for a higher road speed, the flanged axles had a higher road speed than the bar axles in those tractors. The bar axle was more row crop and was slower and would lug a little better. The utility version was faster.

Yep we have had some of those issues.But they have been very good tractors. In my opinion IH should of put a power shift transmission in them around that time and they would have done better against deere. It took deere a long time to produce as many as IH did in there time. I ain't against deere just the price,margins are to tight in ag today.

I thought the 1066-86 were the turbo models and the 986-66 were the non turbo model of the clan. Did you add the turbo decal or was there an actual 986 factory version w/the turbo??? The hydro models were without the turbo too, but could be added after the fact as we had all three.

What made you decide to get a 986 and not say a 1086? Also, what are the up's and downs of the 56 series?
@PAFarms
@PAFarms 6 лет назад
I guess I would have bought a 10, but this 986 was a great deal so I went for it. Also the 986 has a bigger engine than the 10, but they weren’t turbocharged from the factory. My 986 is the same engine set up as the 14-1586. The 56 series is getting harder to find parts for. I know we ran into that a few times. OEM parts are being discontinued. They were good tractors, but they had more piping outside the engine and had more places to leak.
@FarmallFanatic
@FarmallFanatic 6 лет назад
PA Farms All 986s had bigger engines than the 1086s?

Yes. 986 had D436. 1086 had DT 414. If you put a turbo kit on a 986 you have a DT436 same as 14-1586.

I can't seem to downshift on my 1066, it just grinds (more than normal) and I had to come to a stop to get it to go to 3rd, up shifting not a problem, so should I double clutch, not much of a neutral between the gears so I got no clue if something could get torn apart or what.
@PAFarms
@PAFarms 6 лет назад
Yea as they get some wear to them they stat giving trouble. I would start by checking the transmission brake adjustment. From there I would check some linkage under the deck plate.
@f-j-Services
@f-j-Services 6 лет назад
Alright, It has a new transmission parking brake, the lever you pull up, but is there like a transmission brake as when you push the clutch in, it slows the transmission down? (Like on a big truck) because if so, it doesn't slow it down, at all. (I pushed the clutch in idling to the barn in high 4 and shut it down and coasted to a stop and could hear the transmission wind down, took like 15 seconds. Well, Thanks! Awesome videos too! :)

two questions from a 66 series perspective. Hiccups in the 3 pt hitch and how easy hard is it to replace the seals on the torsion bar/lower arm attachment point. Does the unit have to be drained? Thoughts
@PAFarms
@PAFarms 6 лет назад
I have seen the hiccups on them before. I took the top cover off with 3pt arms. We didn’t find much wrong, it ended up being the 2nd pump was going bad. As far as draining it. It all depends. You shouldn’t have to if you have to take the top cover off. Without seeing it, it’s hard to say. I would check online to see about a pressure test on the pump. Hope this helps.
@philipingram1667
@philipingram1667 5 лет назад
Hiccups are caused by the drop cage on the action control valve needing adjustment - this is a dealer job unless you have the tool. This assumes the piston seal is not leaking also. The lower links used a quad seal (two lips on each) to resolve the leak issue - needs to be drained as it is the low point of the reservoir
