I have used several of the Aerogardens for many years. The roots of the plants eventually fill up the water chamber and grow into each other, so plants have a limited lifetime. The herbs I've grown have the best flavor, and if you keep pruning aggressively produce more than I need. Tomatoes drink a huge amount of water and are not better than store bought. I currently have 3 raised beds on stands outside that can be bought for less than $100 each and filled with organic soil for less than $20 each. Everything is growing like crazy. Lettuce, spinach, kale, and a complete herb garden including English mint, which I would never put in my garden. Hydroponic sweet basil is amazing, better than anything I have ever bought in a food store.

A great review video Janelle & Brad and already have a hydroponic system for starting off the germination of the seeds. Once they become seedlings they are replanted into my allotment ( it's a small plot of land used as a garden in the UK). Glad that you enjoy growing your own plant foods ( which I would encourage) and I live in an apartment/flat and the allotment/garden isn't accessible just outside the apartment/flat block I have to walk to my allotment/garden. Love 🥰 the video and love 💕 Janelle & Brad.

The click and grow 3 and click and grow 9 are amazing!!! I have both and you pop the pods in and water and thats it!! you don't even need ph up and down or any nutrients ! its amazing I would try it or look into it
@steamyvegan
@steamyvegan Год назад
I personally wouldn't buy it as I need way more than 3 or 9 growing pods for the amount of produce my household goes through in a week. I'm pretty happy with the 30 pods my iHarvest gives me. 😊 But perhaps the click and grow is great for those who just want to grow something for fun.

If you want to get rid of (at at least cut down) algae, take a page out of the marijuana growers' handbook - get foam collars. They are foam pucks 3-4" in diameter that you slide on at the base of your plant to cover up the pods, and they should prevent light from getting into the pods.
@steamyvegan
@steamyvegan Год назад
I use foam collars to block out light on my empty pods, but I should try using them on my plants too. Just need to cut out a hole in the middle!
@soup5220
@soup5220 Год назад
@@steamyvegan yeah the ones I’m referring to have a small hole on the middle and a slit so you can slide them on the base of the plant. I think it’d help quite a bit!
@steamyvegan

@@soup5220 yeah I’ve seen those - I’ll try making a hole in mine first and if that fails I might have to get my hands on the ones you’re talking about 😉

Great review. Although, I am growing Lettuce, Tomatoes, and Strawberries in my iHarvest at the same nutrient levels as lettuce. Strawberries are one of the few fruits that need low nutrient levels, some varieties of cherry tomatoes can also produce well at the same nutrient levels. It just requires choosing the varieties carefully and experimenting to see what grows well.
@steamyvegan

Hey Dennis! That’s very interesting 🤔 I’ll have to take another go at some strawberries 🍓 while growing all my other greens as I didn’t get awesome results the first time. I really appreciate your insight! 😉😉😉

@@steamyvegan Home grown strawberries are the best because I have finished eating all the ones I got this year. I am now eating blackberries from my allotment/garden.

Can you use all 30 spots at the same time? This is one thing I didn't realize about my Aerogarden Farm XL when I purchased it--it is promoted as being able to grow 24 plants....but in reality you have to leave some of the holes unplanted with spacer caps on them as otherwise your plants won't get sufficient light or room to grow.
@steamyvegan
@steamyvegan Год назад
Hey Hilary! Yes - you can use all 30 pods at once. We regularly do. Of course, there are some exceptions, like if you’re growing plants that have big leaves like squash, or kale. But I grow dwarf kale a lot so I can use all my pods at once. Hope that helps! 😊

Re: 8:10 What was the growing medium you were using at the time that you were referring to? That would be helpful to know. What are you using now?
@steamyvegan
@steamyvegan Год назад
We were using peat pods. In the USA I believe they’re called Rapid Rooters, here in Canada they’re Super Sprouters, but dont think they sell those anymore. We are actually using a different brand of peat pods now and haven’t had any issues so far! I know that iHarvest does recommend the Rapid Rooters. Hope this helps 🙂

I believe they are called Q-Pods. Not sure if they're a local brand to where I live, but I got them at a local hydroponics store (I live in Canada).

Y’all mentioned that you had pest issues before. Could you expand on what caused the issue? I would love to know so that I don’t get any pests in the future 😁
@steamyvegan
@steamyvegan Год назад
At the time of the ‘invasion’ it was the hottest point of the year so naturally we had some fruit flys in our house already (just from having fruit on our counter at times) but they eventually migrated to the iHarvest. We were using a certain brand of peat pods called Super Sprouters and they must have attracted pests, as they conglomerated on the pods a LOT and then eventually overtaking the plants. It was awful 😅 We have never had issues since we stopped using that brand of pods, though. We also weren’t very proactive at reducing algae in the tank at the time so I suspect the algae must have played a part in attracting the pests (the algae does form on the pods, too). We’ve since been using Sensizyn in our water to help get rid of algae and we hardly have algae anymore. I hope this answers your question!

😖 what fertilizer are you using? I have not heard of an organic hydroponic nutrient.. from what I understand if you want organic you should do aquaponics. Hydroponics is not quite organic.. though it is a healthier alternative, when you are not using harmful chemicals to prevent and treat pest.
@steamyvegan
@steamyvegan Год назад
I use MaxiGro by General Hydroponics. Never had to use chemicals or anything to treat pests and I use organic seeds whenever possible.

These systems are so expenisve, it would take years to recoup the cost of growing something like lettuce. I like hydroponics, but for the the price, you could easily buy a 3d printer and print something similar for a quarter of the cost.
@steamyvegan
@steamyvegan Год назад
Ya, there definitely is quite a large up front cost to these systems. We found it took roughly a year and a half to make back the original investment. I can't say anything about 3D printing as I know nothing about that and don't really have the time to learn how to build my own unit. Seems like a lot to learn. Thanks for watching!
