IIUM Exhibition Debate on THBT freedom of speech should not extend to insult of religion

On 26th February, in Moot Court, IIUM, IUM debate series engaged with the motion "This house believes that freedom of speech should not extend to insult of religion" in it's first ever edition.
The debaters for team proposition were :
Sara Abdul Rahman
Hazem Talha
Syed Saddiq
And the debaters for team opposition were :
Amshar Aziz
Abdullah Fakhry
Mubarrat Wassey
At an instant poll conducted within the venue, 68% attendees voted in support of the motion and 32% attendees voted against. At the end of the debate we conducted a second poll and in a large shift of votes 37% voted in support of restriction while an overwhelming 63% voted against thus opposition took the debate by a significant margin.
IIUM debate series will keep engaging with issues concerning the society.

I believe in the concept of legal right and moral right. Insulting religion is probably acceptable legally in certain countries, but knowing the sentiments and harms it may cause, one should know that it is morally wrong to do so. Having healthy discussion about religion should be cultured and nurtured in our society rather than insulting and attacking the religion.

I agree with you , but the majority of participants vote to opposition and they vote to insulting . what do you think about this kind of vote ?

The people for the motion were basically saying that mockery of religion should not be allowed because it offends people. But that is a part of the problem. Everyone has a right to be offended but you have to take appropriate action to the offense. You can't just shut speech down because it offends you.

you can make your comments on a religion, so that it can start a healthy debate or a forum. exchange of info to educate others about a certain religion. but mocking and insulting is wrong and disrespectful and when u are disrespectful and it causes huge harm, then you have to be accountable for your actions

insulting amounts to what extent of harm? and why would someone be accountable for mocking a religion? mocking and insulting is not the kind of language that incites violence from others towards a religious faith, but rather it's a harmless language with the exception of personal feelings being hurt.

At the end, the result doesn't give life, only rights or wrongs. People's lives still don't change. The only fault that defaulted this debate session on religion is when they took the role of God Almighty and debate on behalf of God.

i'm me No. People have every right to decline a POI if it is meant to disrupt the speech, or the speaker wants to continue establishing a point. It is the wrong mindset to call these people cowards, rather, they are taking a wise strategy

You cannot liken physical attack with emotional attack, there's a science to it. Emotional attack like insulting your belief causes subjective pain where there's no absolute truth to it as to why it's wrong and why it's not. But the physical attack on a person might cause injury which result in black and white truth.

+13Shafiq666 Perhaps, objective vs subjective analogy is a vacuum that leads to endless debate. However the argument stands that an insult to belief is different than to a critique to belief.
