She had retired from the music industry after she was touring and dancing for so long. The singing and dancing did take a toll on her body as well as her health. She will be missed by many of her dearest fans.

Don’t read into things inaccurately. He was saying that he wasn’t abusive as portrayed, and his conduct would be acceptable to someone treating his mother that way. Keep in mind Tina was not the little virgin they made her out to be before meeting Ike. She already had kids from Ike’s band member and a random guy who she didn’t know his identity. He raised all of them and married her and provided for them. Tina abused Ike just as much as he abused her.

But I truly believe if he was just closed-fist punching her all those years for almost no reason, she never would have survived that unless she fought back hard.

True story: My mom used to sing as a backup singer in many of Ike and Tina's early gigs. I grew up seeing photos of my mom on stage with Tina (and other older R&B acts) and hearing stories about how badly Ike abused Tina. My whole family went to see the movie when it came out, as my mom had such an emotional connection to it. My mom sat, absolutely quiet, with her eyes glued to the big screen. Her silence was only interrupted by her sobbing during certain scenes of the movie. My mom is a STRONG woman and it was only the 2nd time I had ever seen her cry, up to this point (the 1st time was during my grandmother's - her mother - funeral). According to my mom, the abuse was MUCH, MUCH WORSE than what was depicted in the film! I've always had an appreciation for Tina Turner because of the stories and because she survived the abuse - like so many other courageous woman - and prospered, thereafter. Ike is one of those people who are so screwed up they can't stop being themselves long enough to even drum up a decent, halfway-believable lie! I mean, slapping her to essentially put her in a better mood? What a joke!
Your mother is the only person I’ve ever heard of that actually knew them in real life and didn’t say that that movie was absurd fiction and that the has been smeared badly and deserves none of it. Tina was the abuser and she did just as much drugs.

If you aren't already a writer, you should become one. You shared your mother's story and details in a way I appreciated. Her life was filled with many interesting experiences, including Ike and Tina. I appreciated the short but informative narrative you provided.
How sad, I will say, theres two sides to a story which brings up one thing I still can't believe, why did Tina when moving to Switzerland, did she pack all her belongings and not once ever saw her two adopted sons nor took one phone call from them. They just released that they hadn't spoken to Tina nor seen her for 23 count them 23 yrs . and heard of her death via media! If that's not telling of Tina letting all go than I don't know what it is point being, those two boys loss there mother to suicide. When Ike came and told Lorraine he was divorcing her and marring Tina this women fell apart. Tina didn't lovingly adopt those boys she did so out of guilt. Lorraine shot herself to death in a public womans bathroom. After all things what happened years later ? Karma, first in the same way Lorraine died ( suicide) Tina's biological first born son Craig , committed suicide to which it was said Tina couldn't get over the greif. Talk about Ms. Karma getting an eye for an eye is an understatment. Months later her biological son Ronnie who was hers and Ikes only child passed . Although he had been diagnosed with colon cancer, it was said he to committed suicide. What was left was her adopted sons whom she dumped when she left to live with Erwin Bach . Ike Turner went to his grave swearing he wasn't the monster Tina depicted Ike to be. Ironic isn't that Tina while facing death decides to write her second book to which she tells the world she forgives Ike. I think she knew she was dying and she wanted to right her wrongs and by her forgiving Ike she felt that was righting her wrong. Noone , ever asked to see Tina's medical records to prove her jaw had been broken. Noone looked into any of her allegations towards Ike . They, flopped at her feet never said no and Tina ran her own show. Ike suffered from drug addiction so people never looked into Tina's story, people never listened to like because of the stigma he had from having an addiction problem. Tina had to have drama to sell that book which went to number one as well as had been made into a movie and catapulted Tina to being a millionairess. Tina would say, she never drank alcohol or did drugs but , in the next interview she would state as she did in her book that her, Mick Jagger, David Bowie stood up parting after one of her shows drinking whiskey shots and champagne and theres photos with her holding the champagne bottle. Yet, she then would go back to Tina can do no wrong , good girl stories to which she then claimed she never drank or did drugs. Once I caught this in her two books and plenty of I interviews I began wondering if she had been telling conflicting stories of her partying to then never partying then what else is untrue? Theres an old statement that goes like this , believe nothing you hear and half of what you see. Look I love Tina but it doesn't mean I believed her stories . May she rest in peace. We are all feeling her death. Tina exudes beautiful and classy, as well as sexy shake that up with her gift of talent and you got one heck of a ticking bomb.
