Kurosawa's "Ikiru" is one of my favourite films, and this is the song that the main character sings both at the club and on the swing at the end of the film, reflecting on the fleeting nature of life. Both the message and the music really stuck with me, so I decided to make this arrangement.
Thanks for listening, I hope it was an enjoyable experience!
*Some notes on the source material:*
The original 1915 was written by Yoshii Isamu (lyrics) and Nakayama Shinpei (melody); since this is a purely instrumental arrangement, I've given the main credit to Nakayama in the title of this video. In terms of harmony and countermelodic motifs, I was mostly inspired by Baisho Chieko's version and Hayasaka Fumio's soundtrack from the film.
The original song had four verses, Baisho's version had three, and the film version only had two. I've decided to go with the film's two verses; the song doesn't have a bridge, so I thought it might be difficult to keep the trajectory of the music going if it was too long since the bridge can act as a sort of drop in terms of energy before entering the actual climax of the song. For the purposes of this instrumental version, I think two verses was the correct decision.
