They would have been butchered, also because the entire point of this scene is the Introduction of the Falconetto, a new type of artillery piece which was gifted to Frundsberg by the Duke of Ferrara alongside a ton of arqebusiers, while Giovanni De Medici wasn't aware of that. What the Medici was trying to do here was simply to get into useful distance for shooting in skirmish. The French Gendarmes tried to frontally charge this kind of infantry formations to the lance at Pavia, repeatedly, with widely known results. The Hussars, for all their skills, would have met the same fate.

@DumDumHistory
@DumDumHistory 4 года назад
@@Cervando Really? I know it's not perfect but it's the best in film that I've seen so far. The armour they're wearing conforms pretty well to how armour looked around the 1520s. Granted, the cavalry leader's armour is more 1490s to 1500s, but it was common for armour to be used for a long time. The infantry are wearing sallets, as they should be, while their clothing is of the correct slash-puffed fashion. The main gripe is the odd visored burgonets the cavalry have. As for tactics, you'd be surprised how often cavalry tried to attack pikemen head on. The French at Pavia tried it over a dozen times. What the cavalry are trying to do here is to break up the enemy formation with arquebus fire, which is something that was in fact done on occasion. Granted, it's not a particularly impressive scene, but it's a lot better than most of the rubbish that comes out today.
@Cervando
@Cervando 4 года назад
@@DumDumHistory You highlighted the visors which stick out like a sore thumb. That was what I noticed immediately. Cavalry seldom if ever used arquebuses. There were light cavalry that used pistols, such as German Reiter and the Spanish with their Caracole tactic. However, here there was no need to break up the pike formation as it was laughable, far too few and far too apart. They would have been better used behind the walls. Hiding the canons behind walls and then knocking them down was ridiculous and served no purpose. Suprise could have been achieved simply by firing them at range, which would have also allowed them to get more shots off and stopped the cavalry closing to use their arquebuses. Frankly I didn't understand why the cavalry fled. After the one ineffective salvo from the canons, they were so close to the guns they could not have been reloaded before being over run through the holes they conviently made.
@DumDumHistory
@DumDumHistory 4 года назад
@@Cervando One shouldn't expect tactical perfection from a film. What's far more important is authenticity - the characters have to look and act like they belong in the era they are portraying, and I'd say the film does that very well. Think of it as a play rather than a documentary. There's no plastic shields, no fake-leather costumes, no modern hairstyles. The men haven't just smeared mud on their faces half an hour before filming began - they actually look emaciated and grimy. Olmi was not trying to recreate the exact movements of 16th century battle - he's trying to give an unlearned audience the feel of one, as best as he can. Interestingly, Giovanni d'Medici (the commander depicted here) was indeed killed by a falconet shot to the leg which became infected. Unfortunately I couldn't find out how exactly it happened, but it goes to show that the filmmakers did indeed do research.
