Aeronautica Militare - Il Piaggio Pegna PC-7, soprannominato "Pinocchio" per via del lungo muso, fu senza dubbio il più originale dei progetti per la realizzazione di un idrovolante da corsa che avrebbe dovuto partecipare alla competizione internazionale di velocità per idrovolanti, la nota "Coppa Schneider" del 1929.
Progettato da Giovanni Pegna, progettista della Piaggio nel 1928, per una serie di problemi legati al complesso sistema di propulsione, questo aereo non venne mai portato in volo.
Solo il Maresciallo Tomaso Dal Molin, pilota del reparto Sperimentale Alta Velocità, riuscì ad effettuare delle prove di flottaggio.
Il PC-7, anche se non volò mai e non partecipò a nessuna gara, è ad oggi uno dei progetti di idrovolante più affascinanti mai realizzati che adottava soluzioni tecniche inusuali e all'avanguardia.
Inoltre, assieme ad altri aerei, fu uno dei simboli del genio e della creatività italiana alla ricerca della velocità pura, concepito nell'epoca d'oro dell'aviazione, un'epoca contraddistinta da uomini coraggiosi e macchine straordinarie.

Incredibilmente geniale. Per vedere una applicazione "aero-navale" simile, si è dovuta aspettare la Coppa America di quest'anno. Gli AC 75 sfruttano il principio "Foil" previsto dall'Ing. Pegna.

Beh si attribuisce l'invenzione dei foil navali nel senso stretto sempre ad un Italiano, Enrico Forlanini, già nel 1906, ma già nel 1869 si conosceva e sperimentava l'uso di "foil" su imbarcazioni

La solution était de mettre une dérive en T et ce projet aurait décollé de plus la position du moteur doit être en dehors de l’eau pour permettre une sortie plus rapide. Les Foils sont vraiment une très bonne idée très novatrice ce projet est génial 👍🏻 Ça serait bien d’essayer de reprendre ce projet à zéro en gardant l’idée de base.

Pegna aveva il pallino della ricerca di soluzioni innovative, quanto alle realizzazioni pratiche alle volte era un pò troppo 'avanti', per così dire e i suoi progetti alle volte erano semplicemente troppo estremi. In altre parole, che i modellini realizzati hanno dimostrato in linea di principio questo concetto è un conto, che fosse un aereo pratico e minimamente sicuro per i piloti è un altro.

Fabulous conceptually, but too often let down by reliability issues. My daughter’s brand new Alfa spent 17 days in the dealers workshop in the year before she gave up on it and bought a BMW.

@@q.e.d.9112 sir, it's true that they let themselves down with cars, but let's not let that stereo type thought influence the wide engineering world. They build Frigates for the USA, we have their Leonardo Helicopters on our QE carrier and so on. I now McLaren owners who have had many issues with their cars, be it a supercar. But Italy does not only make cars. I will agree though, they let themselves down due to the car industry, but sir, Italy makes many things, from fridges to satellites etc. Actually they export more then import. But sadly people will always knock them down either through envy or stereo type. 👍

@@q.e.d.9112 Really fantastic concept, state of the art of the time, I dare to say too much .. I wonder how the ditching would have been. Italy at that time was a forge of ideas, but industrialization lacked. I'm sorry for your Alfa Romeo. Car problems are transnational: my technician friend who has a workshop no longer counts the German cars that have to go (and stay) in the workshop for major repairs. On the other hand, on performance engines this is to be expected, Italians, Germans makes no difference.

A beautifull video about a great concept. Such a pity it did not work. One wonders if it could be made to work today. As far as I know no surface heat exchange system has however ever worked well. Furthermore I have read that the main problem was to switch between the airscrew and the water propellor. Can you confrim that? An english translation would be very much apreciated!

I’m guessing here, but I suspect it had to get up on its foils before the air propellor was able to clear the water. So I imagine the screw would be used to lift her out of the water sufficiently for the prop to be able to turn. If it been made, I imagine it could have cleaned up the Schneider cup as those foils would have far less drag than floats when airborne.

@@q.e.d.9112 That is exactly what it was meant to doa nd it was actually built as the pictures of the people in / on the half submerged prototype prove. As far as I know they did however nevert get the tting into the air. I read this had to do with the clutch system. As you guessed power had to be transversed from the boat screw to the air screw. I am interested in more details. Was that the true reason or couldn't they get it to behave like a hydrofoil at all? To me the hydroplane surfaces look a bit small. On the other hand the thing will have be relatively light. England winning the Schneider Trophy permanently will also not have helped. The Fascist Italian regime was not much into science but much more into prestige. What a concept though!

@@marcbrasse747 I don’t think the size of the foils would have been a problem. The America’s Cup boats weigh 6 tons (~6,000kg) and at less than 20 knots they can ride on a single foil of 2m. span. The foils shown on this model appear to be perhaps half that span but with two of them and at a speed far greater than 20 kn. I would imagine they would have no difficulty providing sufficient lift. Switching between the two props while maintaining constant thrust might well have been an intractable problem back in those days. What a pity; it would have been an amazing plane if they could have overcome those difficulties. Landing it might have been a dodgy business. Get the angle of incidence wrong and it could do a high speed nosedive. I wouldn’t want to be the first to try it.

@@q.e.d.9112 Yeah, that more or less figures. For an aircraft it off course had a whopping engine but compared to a boat / ship the whole thing must still have been very light. Imagine a USSR Kometa class hydrfoil with wings though. Now that woudl look very cool in a retrofuturistic way! :-) The drivetrain problems are indeed the best gues but I'd still like to know more.

Più che altro sviluppo aeronautico, lo Spitfire fu sviluppato grazie a soluzioni elaborate per la Schneider Cup.

I really like Italian mechanical engineering despite the the bad reputation it gets in the USA. I'm not a big fan of Italian electrics though like Magneti Marreli.... The Italian's often don't get credit for building the fastest airplanes in the world in the '30s.

l'ingegneria italiana, non lo dico perché sono italiano, è di primordine. con questo non voglio fare discorsi di supremazia beninteso. essa è purtroppo andata spesso in contrasto con esigenze capitalistiche ottuse che mirano a massificare la resa economica facendo risparmi di qualità nel processo produttivo o cercando appalti statali. da italiano me ne dispiace molto ma un cittadino italiano non è accondiscendente a questo.

I had 5 Fiat cars between 1967 and 1990.....all with Magneti Marelli electronics and never did i have any problems whatsoever........Magneti Marelli electronics is used in high Performance Racing cars also.......so i cannot understand why you had problems...!.....Maintaining and servicing a vehicle as stipulated by the manufacturer is of crucial importance .....All Fiats....Ferrari,s.....Lancia,s ...Alfa,s and many other non Italian makes use Magneti Marelli and Veglia Borletti ...electronics....for road and racing cars...

L'Italia fu la seconda nazione al mondo, dopo la Germania, a far volare un aereo a reazione, il Campini-Caproni CC-2, di cui sono conservati al Museo della Scienza la fusoliera per prove statiche e il motore.

@@ederaminghi3763 era solo un problema di potenza, con un motore sufficente vola anche un tavolo. All'epoca la areodinamica e idrodinamica erano sufficenti per il progetto ma i motori no. Poi avrebbe avuto bisogno di una elica controrotante per evitare la imbardata con le pale orientabili. Troppo innovativo, pochi denari e di inutile impiego militare lo hanno condannato.
