Wow, the title makes the conversation sound scarier than it really is. Is your dumpster business Illegal?? I'm not sure, decide for yourself. The government always wants to reach their hands in your pocket! This is no exception.
Just found your channel. I'm getting a small 6x10 for my own personal use but after my personal business is finished I may look into a rental side hustle. I'm pulling with a ½ ton Lincoln Navigator L
Well good thing is I all ready have all these things you speak of been a trucker 35 years so to me this video was was good cause a lot of people think they can get away with out doing any of this you did not mention the fact that you need a medical card to cross state line you might want to check it out keep up the great work thanks for the vid
@@rollingops you may also need a medical card with your driver licence to cross state line. I am starting this biz also so a littel investment in money and time could save you a lot of time and money later . GREAT VID
But u are correct if you gonna run this full time need to get all ur ducks in a roll. Just found ur channel love all the info u putting out here thanks buddy keep up the good videos
In MI, a 26k GCWR truck + roll off trailer do not require a DOT #. According to the state, junk destined for disposal has no value and makes it exempt. Now if you were hauling scrap metal, then that would require DOT#.
im actually thinking that we should carry a car jack with good rollers to actually roll the trailer that special 2” into place, of course when in grass situation that would be hard but maybe a jack with air tires?? but, also customers should learn to take our “professional opinions” when it comes to positioning this cans… great video!
I’m in Illinois running a truck over CDL. Have commercial insurance but no DOT no MC number since we stay within the state. Just curious, where you saw that DOT is required?
Well Holy cow. You are a lucky one, IL is not required. BUT I go into MO and IA, so that is what gets me. Crazy! www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/do-i-need-usdot-number
Great videos keep it up !! I’m in Illinois also and I’m looking to start up a side hustle from what I know and I could be wrong but 26000 pounds and under you do not need DOT numbers if you are not crossing state lines. Not sure if you need a Cdl but I drive for a living and have a class A
Butttt, it is also dependant on what state you stay in. If I stayed in IL I would be ok. But I go into MO and IA, and they require it. www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/do-i-need-usdot-number So actually you are technically looking ok!
Here in CA even if your trailer is under 10k gvwr if your using it for profit u need dot, CA numbers and Motor carrier permit. If over trailer over 10k gvwr you still need all 3 plus CDL
Good days and bad days like any other job. As far as I know 10,000gvwr and under, no DOT for intrastate. I have full commercial auto, but a lot of extra red tape and expenses to carry a CDL.
Residents are 75% but I get a lot of small contractors during the year. And a few of the big guys come to me when they are in a pinch and the big guys can't deliver, or they used a 30 yard and have a little left over
The rules and regulations are pushed by the big providers. They understand it creates additional barriers to entry, which provides less competition. All industries experience this.
How much do you pay per month for commercial insurance? I understand there are many variables that could make it different between me and you but I’m curious what is the round about number. Btw man, I love all your videos. Your the best guy out there for putting out this info.
A little over $650 a month, truck and 2 trailers no insurance on the dumpsters. Don't let someone scam you into insurance on each dumpster. If its attached to a trailer, you're good. If a crack head cuts it into a million pieces and takes it to the scrap yard, well that's unlucky.
@@rollingops wow, that’s great to know. Did you have a couple months saved up to pay for things like insurance until you started getting people renting your dumpsters I guess like any start up business transition? And if you don’t mind me asking, that Ins. Monthly payment and your truck payment is pretty much all your responsible for unless your renting your own yard to keep dumpsters overnight I guess? Btw again, love all the little details about issues you run into on the job. In a funny way, it’s like having a dad to guide you along the ins and outs of the biz. I’m gonna try to share your videos to as many people as I can.
@@josephr5766 haha I love that, thanks man. If I'm being honest, no I did not. I took a couple really big risks and pushed it. But I had money coming from a full time job, I had cash flow from a couple of rentals and I lived for free because I owned a duplex when I started and rented the other side out higher than my mortgage. All of that allowed me to get going and figure it out as I went.
@@josephr5766 your biggest worries will be truck payment if you have one, gas, dump fees, and fuel. There is def some misc stuff that pops up. But those are the big ones
I was thinking of a setup with a f250 and 14k gvwr but here in Hawaii they have a clause where if the trailer gvwr is over 10k gvwr then a class b cdl is required... My question is if I still got a 14k gvwr trailer but had the manufacturer derate it to 9,900gvwr but still use the trailer to the capacity of the original 14k gvwr do you think I would get in trouble or if anyone would notice?
That was my exact setup before, but we don't have that clause here. That's a tough one, because you could probably ride around for years, maybe even get pulled over by local police and be ok. But a state patrol could really ruin your day if you aren't setup properly. There is quite a bit of debate about de rating trailers, and the legality behind it.
Do you have to deal with larger companies like Republic and them having a franchise agreement with the city making it so only they can haul waste away?
@@rollingops Lucky! They have them here, but I didn't know that when I started so here I am. Ever since I've started though there has been 4 other guys who have started as well so if Republic comes a knocking hopefully we can band together for something!
I was getting used at my last job, was in a dark place working an insane amount, someone who was a lender told me to come work for them. Figured I'd try it out!
That whole can't pick it up is on you brother! All you got to do the container is so light you can spin it around pull it backwards pull it sideways with your trailer you can do anything to pull it out in the open and then load. I think you're making more of it than it really is.
Ah man! Glad you were there to move my dumpster with your grizzly stregth becauce its so light. Or move the wall or curbing on the other side to make a more room, or direct traffic as I dragged it into the street. Just giving ya a hard time, it's hard to explain these situations without filming every angle and showing every obstacle, but this wasn't the end of the world by any means, simply not ideal. But yes at the end of the day I did drag it out backwards in the middle of trafffic, but it's not ideal. Especially because the dumpster ended up being significantly heavier than it looked and traffic didn't care what I was doing It isnt the end of the world but keep in mind this is business, and time is money, me taking the time to do all of this is costing me time and money because I dont charge for these hasstles. When I typically would just show up, load up and be on the road in minutes. Thanks for watching, and providing your feedback, I do appreciate it.
We pick up our Maxx d roll off setup tomorrow. We are figuring pricing right now. Really want to do the 1 day rentals along with the 2-3 and 4-7 days. I’m watching other RU-vidrs and they are saying 1 day rentals aren’t realistic/profitable. It seems like you do pretty good, do you get a lot of 1 day rentals? I know it’s probably all going to depend on our area, just wanted to get your opinion.
I get more 2-3 day rentals more than anything. But as time goes on and I have even more inventory, I may not be able to keep up with 1 day rentals and will need to phase it out.
@@rollingops will they cover your truck trailer if you tell them you are renting the trailer meaning leaving at customers house ? I asked for a quote and did not want to cover me although I plan to use a different insurance for general liability insurance for when parked at customers house
It's definitely very expensive to be a 100% legal a 100% legal on all my businesses from tree care landscaping junk junk removal and dumpster rentals and a lot of stuff in between. I have all the big dollar insurance. all the commercial auto insurance policy , Contractor's license for state of California, DOT numbers, CA number, All that stuff.
@@rollingops Yeah it does suck sometimes when you try to compete against the guys that are not legit. But being a 100% legit has its perks too. For instance right now I'm doing a school district job For a general contractorAnd hes gonna end up needing over 80 dumpsters in the next 6 monthsAnd I got the contract because I'm a 100% legit
drop trailer. re hook on at jack knife 90 degree. get trailer out of there. Un hook trailer. Drag can to a decent place with truck. hook up trailer. pick up can.
I have heard of guys that removed the def tank on their rig and then got pulled over. A DOT officer is going to know if your truck needs def. And I have heard the fine is insane. But that's all I know
@RollingOps thanks man. I appreciate the reply. I've been watching alot of ur videos. I'm jus5 out of options and still not cleared to work from my Dr's but I need to do something because disability is a joke. The accident is on my page. It was labor day last year.
If your under 26k lbs gross you don’t need cdl. If your under 10k lbs you don’t need DOT or medical card. If your running a half ton truck you might be under the limits, if it’s a 2500 or heavier you more than likely are over 10k.
You don't need MC number for private trash hauling services. Interstate US DOT. And the IFTA sticker is for out of state gas tax.. if you're under CDL requirements you do not need IFTA sticker. I have US DOT number Interstate under CDL requirements commercial auto insurance and liability insurance coverage. The MC number is for hauling other persons goods.. if you apply for DOT number if you are hauling trash. Your Dumpster rentals. Are your own personal equipment. Filed for my DOT number and within 2 months I got call from the DOT Federal carrier office. He told me if you're under 26,000lbs. Even out of state and you hauling trash private.
Then I can't haul as much! Double edge sword, only 2 times I was pulled I was of course hauling massive loads right on the brink of legal. Never fails!
Your forgetting something that’s important if you have dot/mc numbers and that’s hours of service. Learn axle weights and the bridging formula. Also Look into NASTC. They have a fuel program that allows you up to .70 off a gallon.
@@rollingops internet search for NASTC. It’s a membership we use for our class 8 trucks and they have many services, but we only use the program for fuel. How the fuel program works, the maga carriers and large owner ops sign-up with the major truck stops for fuel incentives. There’s a gallon requirement that they agree too. Obviously the more fuel the megas pump or use the more savings. Well when your a 1 man band, that’s kind of difficult to obtain that perk if your not a 15 or 20k truck fleet. With NASTC, they obtain accumulation of all there members and then use that number to use as a negotiating the fuel savings rate. Point is, there’s more single owner ops then megas carriers. Hopefully I’ve explained well enough to peak your interest. Your pick-up, you may also want to look into upgrade your fuel tank size from titan fuel tanks. In my ram 3500, I have 2 tanks totaling 100 gallons. Can travel 1200 to 1500 miles on 1 full-up without the need to sacrifice any bedspace. I drop the spare tire and there’s a fuel tank in its place. The oem tank is more then doubled in capacity. I also upgraded the fuel system to fass fuel. It has a internal fuel heater. No more worry bout fuel jelling or adding fuel anijel additives which increases your fuel costs. On the subject of fuel, winter stay away from any biodiesel and stick with diesel #2. But diesel #3 is much more preferable in freezing temperatures. Hope My suggestions will help you. Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together. You may want to consider rumble too. Your videos will make more money with out the hassle of spending so much time editing. More time for writing mortgages and less time editing yt videos.
I have a couple, but believe it or not those bog out on some of the dumpsters I have needed to pick up. Or if I'm trying to change a tire with a heavy load. Need a realllly heavy duty one or 2
@@rollingops so ifta wouldn’t be needed if intrastate, but that also means I’m not sure if the actual vehicle can be used out of state for personal use. This may be why I put any stickers and numbers on a magnet decal and remove when on vacation. One thing, I didn’t hear you touch on, is if your using an ELD, have a drug testing program setup since your operating under CDL.
Your DOT comments are not nationally correct. FL doesn’t require DOT if under CDL, saying same state, and ONLY hauling your own goods. My contract makes everything in the dumpster the moment it’s connected to the truck.
I've literally thought about stating in my contract that the contents belong to me once loaded. But was afraid of the legality if that was then illegal! Smart though, I may reconsider it.
I also just learned not every state requires DOT if staying within state (Im in IL, but travel into MO and IA), but just a heads up Florida does look to be on the intrastate list now! Not sure if I'm reading it correctly, but just may be something to look into! www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/do-i-need-usdot-number
Not fully true as a contractor I can run commercial plates with no dot even crossing state lines, I just can not haul for hire and have a weight and length limit. Only thing I think you kind of missed but to be fair thats not really what you are talking about.
Also just a side note but if that contractor running that equipment is there contractors help each other, they probably would have gave you a hand getting unstuck with only mild making fun of you for getting into that predicament lol
So I used to think this as well. But I know of a garage door installer who crossed state lines and got a citation for no dot number or medical card. Same with a mowing guy who crossed the river to do a few jobs. He dropped the contracts after the incident. He had no trailer, just a truck with his logo on it. Which is why you see people like fedex contractors in box trucks that have dot numbers on their box vans. Basically, I was told if you are making money on the travel, have a logo on your truck and crossing state lines you better have dot numbers.
