Welcome to episode 69 of the Commander's Guild: "Mutation Station" Every week I go to scryfall.com and randomly select a card, making a budget (under $100) commander deck around it and showcasing a gameplay video of the deck. This week I'm joined by Mike (McAgee3 on Twitch & RU-vid), Sorceress, and Bilal.
This week's "random" card is Essence of the Wild (it was actually suggested by ConsiderationNo5636 on Reddit) and uses Illuna, Apex of Wishes as the commander. Since Essence of the Wild turns all of our creatures into copies of it, why not try to turn it into the craziest mutate stack we can so that when we copy it, we make an army of unstoppable monsters? Failing that, we can always mutate onto creatures with ETB abilities and then copy those so, you know, options.

Never thought about this type of interaction with Mutate and Essence of the Wild. Right off the bat, I'm all in on this video. Let's GOoooooo! So many cool interactions and fun times to be had, couldn't wait to see how this one would play out in an actual game, just seems like a lot of fun, but also a lot of stuff to keep track of. Pretty decent on the price as well, came in a good amount under budget as you pointed out. Some killer upgrades there as well. When it comes to the opponents, I think Kitt Kanto early on will be dangerous, Mathas puts a target on so many creatures back and Trostani is something that can go big. In terms of threat I would go with Trostani, Mathas, Kitt Kanto (although it is close for 1st and 2nd to me). This was such a great game, and showcased the power of all the decks involved. Congrats to the winner of the game, it was yet another phenomenal watch for sure. Keep up all the amazing work, see you all for the next one. I too am also curious about the Illuna on a plant token interaction for the counters, hope someone can answer that one.

there is a little mistake, mutate didnt change the creature type so illuna isnt a plant.

Thank you for letting me know! I wasn’t sure how that worked and the general consensus was that it did so that’s how we played it. That’s definitely good to know for the future though.

Hi! Love the deck! I'm trying to do something very similar to your idea with Illuna currently, so this definitely helps a lot, thank you for the ideas. Also, I know it's been an year after this video's been uploaded, so probably you guys know this by now, but I'd like to point out a mistake about Kitt that basically changed the whole game lol. Her ability triggers only once each combat, so you can only tap 2 creatures and goad/buff one, you can't do that with 4, 6, etc.

Oh my god, Rite of Replication and probably Sakashima are TOTALLY going into my Jin-Gitaxias deck.

Palace Guard is definitely on my list. I have the deck built, I just need to record the game. So it should be pretty soon hopefully.

That’s gross with Jin-Gitaxias. Having five of him probably wins games really quickly.

@@DungeonLearnersGuide I was doing some math, and if I've got Jin-Gitaxias copied with Spark Double, then I kick Rite of Replication for my first sorcery of the turn I can copy the non-legendary Spark Double copy. Then I have 7 copies of Jin-Gitaxias, only one of which is legendary. Then, I cast Snapcaster Mage, and recast and rekick Rite of Replication, giving myself another 85 copies of Jin. Finally, I cast Time Stretch. XD it gets real gross real quick. Edit:It was actually thanks to this video I realized I could copy the copy made by Spark Double, so thanks for that!!
