Illustrator Tutorial - Using the Join tool in Illustrator CC 

I have been following one on one series, both photoshop and illustrator, it is the best series I have came across, very detailed, and you get to learn almost everything, great tutor

If I create multiple lines that join together to make a "shape" (e.g. 5 lines that make a star), is there a way where I can make it into an actual shape so I can fill it with colour etc.

Go to view / turn on the smart guides for joining the diagonals perfectly in a square.

I just wanted to merge paths and opened up this vid.. I've learned 4 more features... Thanks. Also, do you now why I can't see the other paths' anchor points while I am drawing the current object or path. Can you help?

when I try to join 2 lines together it tells me this "The selected objects cannot be joined as they are invalid objects,( Compound paths, closed paths, Text Objects, Graphs, Live Paint group). You can use Join command to connect two or more paths, paths in groups; or to close an open path." and I don't know what to do, I can't start from beginning every time. someone please help me?
