I completely agree with you. I thought there was a lack of a worthy farewell to this very important character, and that Ethan showed so much affection throughout the films. Still waiting for part two.

I have a feeling that they are not bringing her back. I don't even know why they bothered to have her in the movie at all, since her part was so small it was an insult. I have heard the director's explanation of why they killed Ilsa's character, but to me, it makes absolutely no sense!! It did not help the story, it ruined it!! Some of this movie was very contrived. I don't think I can warm up to Grace, as a result of their decision to kill Ilsa. Probably won't watch MI 8.

Also ... many thanks to the 'well-intended citizen' in one of Evenstar's older videos (can't remember which one) that spoilered that particular scene in DR Part 1. Maybe next time, you won't be so inconsiderate to others, whomever you are.

Shes not dead. Mcquarrie isnt that stupid. Hes already set up so much history between Ilsa and Ethan. The ending he has set for Ethan and Ilsa will be more beautiful and perfect than Batman and Catwoman at the end of The Dark Knight Rises

Lol. They don’t have any chemistry. We all see how quickly Ethan “got over” Ilsa’s death. He does not like women from the beginning. That’s why he let her thief girlfriend sleep with another man in MI2 and thought letting go Julia is the best way to protect her in ghost protocol

He trusted Ilsa when no one else did, they kept each other close even when they were both very focused and they prioritized the mission first, protected her, worried about her, the way they stared at each other and knowing what both of them will do without them saying it, etc. The "got over" stuff was just bad writing, or Ilsa is actually still alive and not dead (slim chance). He also tried to protect Ilsa before they went to the party in dead reckoning part 1. And please don't mention MI2. Ethan was not very Ethan-ing in MI2 And I don't think Ethan moved on from Ilsa. Ethan and Grace felt like a platonic chaotic duo to me. And after Ilsa's death, Ethan became more protective with Grace. And from my personal opinion, I think the director is trying to say that after Ilsa's death, Ethan became Grace's guardian angel to avenge Ilsa and make Grace his responsibility because he failed to protect Ilsa and he's trying to make it up for his true lover that died. It's like when you fail at doing something, and you make the decision to do better next time but with a different thing because you can never erase that mistake again? Yeah. Kinda like that.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Love their chemistry. Broke my heart to see they killed her character only to be replaced with Grace. Grace's character is borderline annoying. Ilsa n Ethan make a much better couple.

I'm hoping she's alive!! It makes no sense to kill her off just bc they have a new chick now. Esp with Luther telling the world in Fallout that Ethan has only cared about two women ever, and one of them being Ilsa.

Upon second viewing I’m 100% certain Ilsa is not dead. There’s a sequence in Venice where Ethan and Ilsa spend time together by themselves (from the rooftop to boat ride to Widow’s party). When Gabriel says either Grace or Ilsa will die tonight, Ilsa gives a very sly, knowing smile at Ethan. It’s as if they discussed what Gabriel would do in advance and is acting according to plan. The team needed to motivate Grace and Ilsa’s sacrifice is what pushes her to fully cooperate in the last act. I believe Ilsa faked death to get off grid from the Entity and will reappear in the sequel. In terms of narrative point of view, the two-parter films also need an overarching plot. While a lot of threads have been concluded, there are foreseeable plot threads that will carry on in the next one (Grace joining IMF, CIA agents still in pursuit, Paris having a pulse, etc.) and some unforeseeable threads, which I am sure will be the explanation of Ilsa’s apparent resurrection and where Luther has been working on to defeat the Entity

I could not like Grace, because Ilsa was pushed to the background of this movie. I kept hoping for a longer romantic scene between Ethan and Ilsa with more dialogue. Why did Ilsa have so few lines in this movie?? She was more a decoration than a character who participated in the action. So disappointing!! I will most likely not be interested in DR2.

SPOILERS BELOW. The thing is, she shouldn't have needed saving. Why would Ilsa, a trained intelligence agent, grab the sword left on the table, when she could have easily taken a gun from the White Widow's bodyguards (after her life had just been threatened)? I prefer a good sword fight to a gun shoot out, but Ilsa was built up to be Ethan's equal and she was killed off rather quickly. The whole cliche of the male protagonist avenging the murder of a woman (or multiple women, as Gabriel points out) just feels outdated and one would hope McQ could come up with a better plot twist.

And after 2 movies of building subtle attraction between Ilsa and Ethan, they neither mourned her enough, nor did they sell us the exaggerated quick bond between Ethan and Grace. Something is off. That's not how McQ usually handles characters. Tom Cruise was also the one who wanted a proper closure for Julia's story in Fallout. I don't think they would wrap Ilsa's story this way. Unless Rebecca asked to leave the franchise, which I highly doubt.

​@@laprimaverrraI think the reality might be Venice authority will not issues permit to fake guns shoot out on their UNESCO heritage site. Everything in Venice is ancient, from thousands of years ago. Just like no scene inside the Collusium or inside the Venice Palace or st Mark's church.

Much of M:I -7 mirrors the first Mission movie. From bringing back Kitteridge to ending the film with a train sequence. In Mission 1 there was a fake death on a bridge with a huge reveal that came later on in the film. I suspect that there will be similar reveal in Part 2.
