This is an impromptu blitz game played between Samuel Sevian and IM Greg Shahade at a break during a US Chess School (www.uschessschool.com) session in LA. Greg has a fantastic RU-vid channel here:
www.youtube.co...
Please do not leave a negative comment about the child-- it will not be approved. He is TEN.

What a gracious and good guy Greg was. He let the kid have his moment.
@EmdrGreg
@EmdrGreg 9 лет назад
Oh, I believe it. It does appear though that Greg could have just resigned, but let the game continue to the end for the kid's sake. It came across as being a very selfless and generous way to handle the game. By the way I'm not what anyone would call a chess player; I know how the pieces move and that is almost literally the extent of my knowledge of the game.

Shahade handled this pretty well. I played a lot of tournaments in the 90s and early 2000s. I never liked playing against kids. Some kids were fine, but others were bad winners and worse losers. It's not much fun winning a game when your opponent bursts into tears or wipes all the pieces off the board and runs out of the room.

even though greg blundered a piece at the start.. it's still pretty impressive for this kid to be able to take it all the way to a win against a player this much stronger than him. especially in blitz where the value of a piece is significantly less, elo-wise.

ricky bobby He's a kid.... he understands a game. He probably doesn't understand social behavior. He doesn't understand and won't care for some time,,because all he cares about is the game. He doesn't and shouldn't care if sore losers comment on a video of him playing a game. His opponent seems impressed and actually enjoys it a bit.
@EmdrGreg
@EmdrGreg 9 лет назад
ricky bobby It's true, ricky-- but we can cut him some slack. He's young, and he was filled with excitement and joy at the prospect of beating Greg. His behavior is an indirect way of showing how much respect and admiration he has for Greg. We've all been cocky and arrogant at some time or other-- he will mature and learn. Greg is the hero of this vid in my opinion.

Samuel Sevian (born December 26, 2000) is an American chess prodigy. He holds the record for the youngest ever United States Grandmaster at the age of 13 years, 10 months, and 27 days. He also holds the record for the youngest ever United States International Master at 12 years and 10 months. He has also broken records at becoming National Expert and Master. Sevian was World Champion for U12s in 2012.

At the age of 12 years 3 months Samuel Sevian (The "kid" here) became the youngest I.M. in history. A world champion U12. He's destined for great things. As for the moaning about his bad behavior here it must be remembered he's only 10 years old and this was a casual game with lots of laughter and fun for everyone. Even the loser laughs along. Great. Chess at it's very best . . . . . .

i wonder how they both "knew", that, when the IM lost his knight @0:26 without much protection to come out equally of the exchanges, he was about to lose the game. is it because of the rapidness of those blitz games? ..i mean in a "normal" chess game, you could think of a strategy to pull off a win, after losing a knight at the beginning of a game, right?
@soakedbearrd
@soakedbearrd 9 лет назад
Paul Davis It isn't an automatic loss, but at that level (master and above) it's very hard to come back from. Not only is he down the exchange (not a whole piece), but he is also down a pawn with a terrible position in the opening. Very hard to recover.
@styloverte1163
@styloverte1163 9 лет назад
He didn't exactly lose a knight. He just went down a pawn. A pawn is still winning though. In a normal game, a pawn can sometimes be a death sentence when playing someone your rating.

styloverte116 Uh, as stated several times earlier in the thread, he lost a pawn and an exchange.
@Brukernavnn
@Brukernavnn 9 лет назад
Making a mistake that costs you material at this level is almost an automatic loss. With players this good, you can't just pull off a win with less pieces without somehing extraordinary happening.

RODRIGOCELEBRONI you don't know of what you speak. Touch-move is in effect only in formal tournament games. In speed chess, there is no such rule - the move ends when you push your clock.

@McNastyMac 9 лет назад
RODRIGOCELEBRONI Not in blitz, the rules are a little different: it's touch-clock move, even if you have touched and dropped the piece, if you have not touched the clock, you can take your move back. Another small difference is that the king can be captured, resulting in an immediate win for the one who captures it (an illegal move is a warning, but an illegal move that leaves your king en prie may lose the game).
