It is great to hear him mention other people in social media taking a small portion of the video dog training out of context to address how the dog is stressed while bringing down the trainer’s methods. For pet owners, it is hard to see what could be right or wrong for training their dogs.
10000% It's unbelievably unprofessional and wrong. It's honestly sad to see BUT it hopefully gives others an opportunity to see who that person really is and what they care about. Breaking others down in any industry is an immediate sign of jealousy and major insecurities. Imagine if I posted videos of other dog trainers doing things I didn't agree with and that was my brand?
I think it is the sad world we live in that people think it is ok to critique every small thing someone does wrong. This dogs behavior changed and that is all that matters. He got to stay with the family he loves and love him because he was getting better trained. It is so hard as a pet owner to decide what is right for my dog when I see so much conflict in the politics of the dog training world. It is something I love about this channel that it does not bring others down by showing clips and critiquing them when they were not there in the moment the issue happened.
Here to second this - after speaking with Tom regarding my dog Roux and then implementing the training we discussed, of COURSE he was stressed at first. And now he actually can ENJOY being a dog and getting to go places and having more freedom and choice because he knows the rules of engagement and is so happy that I am actually leading him now and removing the anxiety of "what do I do" from him in stressful situations.
@@tomdavisofficial This is absolutely unbelievable! Who is the guy who uses parts of your videos to critique you? Can we recommend the guy a psychiatrist for his low self-esteem? I am STUNNED that anyone would take a part of your video and then critique it. Wow! There is NOTHING to critique about your training! You are a MAGICIAN! And you save countless dog's lives!
That first daughter who handled him was really impressive. You could tell she had a natural confidence. When she took Buzz he was very attentive; completely different from when the mom handled him.
Can you imagine? The mom never had a dog and now she has one of the smartest of all dogs. At least the husband has had dogs. You have to be an experienced dog owner to have a German shepherd. Maybe they should of started out with a King Charles Cavalier.
The Dad nailed it when he said of Tom, “He’s not training the dog, he’s training us” 😌 Another outstanding video, consistent, calm, dedicated and again fantastic tone of voice. I appreciate your use of the words teach and guidance, and addressing the negativity of a stern tone in training. Amazing to hear you’re coming to the UK! 😁
Yep. 💯 % My Giant Schnauzer took me to training classes 3 times before I finally stayed to "get it".😁 I was going to take her back to the breeder because she was very challenging for me to work with. I'm so grateful neither one of us quit. ❤️
I can tell that the daughter has been doing a lot of work with him because when she’s in the background working him, he’s doing everything she’s asking of him. It’s just more proof that when you hold your dog accountable, they are easy to work with.
I salute Tom on his patience with people. It’s also incredible to see how effortlessly he communicates with the dog. Dogs are so amazing. I love them so much.
I love Tom's realistic expectations. "What is the success rate?" Answer: "That's the wrong question/mentality." "Why isn't it working at home after the first couple days?" Answer: "It takes time for you as a handler to learn and for your dog to understand things they've never been taught." I hope this family built some skills because it seems they went in looking for a quick fix like most busy families. The mom's insistence to two-handing the leash was very interesting. I hope Mom gains some confidence too. Beautiful dog, great work.
It's quite telling that it was the mum who asked that question. She wants the dog 'fixed', like she could get a car fixed and then it's done and good to go. It does not work like that with a living creature. I hope she now understands that training does not stop when you leave class, or even after a few weeks at home. It's al life-long thing.
@@EvelineUK the mother has no interest really, she just wants him perfectly trained for him to be at home. I'm getting a vibe she was out voted on the getting a dog and she still hasn't warmed to him
I love how you keep this raw and not just show the highlights while also showing the awkward uneasy conversations you have to have with the owers. Awesome to watch.
She's scared of the dog and doesn't want it around. She has zero interest in putting in the work. If my wife doesn't want a dog, I would have serious reservations about getting one. It's a big step, not like having a goldfish.
I noticed the pinned comment and I was really glad to see it. I'm extremely frustrated with how many videos I get suggested of trainers bashing other trainers. It can be really disheartening so it was nice to see that addressed in this video. We're all out here doing out best, that needs to be respected more.
Mom has never had a dog before, and l give her a lot of credit for trying to learn about being a good dog owner. I hope she keeps at it, because he can be her best friend.
Tom, you constantly and consistently amaze me. My children have learned to read dog body language and I specifically ask them to watch you!!! My 18 year old daughter, who was viscously attacked by our English Mastiff in November, recently started working at a doggy daycare & is more in tune with behavior than all of the other workers b/c of the valuable lessons you teach us. Thank you. We wish we had found you earlier and that things didn't go so wrong for us and Goliath. Every human you educate will eventually share what they learned with others, and that's progress.
I love how honest he is with every client that’s in a way that is nice enough but the truth where it is like you are the problem, I can help but you gotta put in the work and the dog will follow not “it’s the dog who has the problem” which is honestly a hard pill to swallow but it makes you take accountability of your actions because your dog’s behavior is a result of it soooo 🤷🏽♀️
The talk around the 14 minute mark probably had the most impact on me then any video youve ever done. Being that straight forward and honest with an owner is amazing. I really hope they heard you.
GSDs are so smart and trainable. I think Tom gets fast results because he has a fresh relationship with the dog and the dog quickly figures out that Tom will treat them fairly and give clear communication so they decide hey! I like this guy! Whereas the existing family has to work extra hard to reset and rebuild their relationship with the dog
"He's not training the dog, he's training us" that's the most accurate thing an owner has ever said in these videos. I think that's the most difficult part in dog training: training the owners
"Don't look for perfection - look for progression every single day a little bit." I feel that sentence so much. Sometimes you get frustrated because you want improvement so fast, but you are missing that you have already come a long way and things improved already. If I look where I was with my dog 1 year ago ... we did so much improvement. But there is always stuff to work on and you get frustrated so easily. Take a depp breath and be proud of the things you accomplish.
I’ve watched you grow as a person and as a trainer and it’s been amazing! I LOVE seeing trainers care so deeply about their clients both dog and human. It’s (I’d say) 99.9% human error and mistakes when dogs act this way. As a trainer we train humans more than dogs. Humans can be so much more complicated and stuck in their ways because it’s all they’ve known. Dogs seek the guidance and structure. Once they’re shown that structure they absolutely thrive and absorb it like a sponge and melt in your hands in relief. Beautifully done!
Reactive for sure. And anxious. It’s so great to see a GSD that starts to “click”. I LOVE your work with GSDs. I watch every GSD video of yours. And your techniques have VASTLY reduced my GSD Coatie’s dog reactivity out on walks.
I have a 4yo German shepherd. She will kangaroo hop on the leash bc she is so excited. I’ve tried everything. She also barks and growls at people. But if they walk up to her she just wants to meet them. She doesn’t know how to show it I guess. I love watching his videos and working with her. She has gotten better.
Oh my Gosh! I laughed so hard when Buzz straight pushed the water bowl out like "Yo! Im thirsty!" Great Video Tom! Great instruction and these guys made such great progress! It is truly amazing to watch you work! Keep it up!
Tom you did an amazing job with Buzz. He came into our salon for grooming a year ago and was aggressive to the point he bite my hand. I’m amazed on his progression. Just hope the mom works with him. The daughters seem to own the dog.
Frustration is a real struggle when dealing with a strong willed dog, but patience and practice will get you to where you want to be. I struggled at first when training with my dog, but with daily training he is a completely different dog to walk and I love it. We aren’t close to perfect by any means but we improve daily. Great video🥰
@@letarolfson2376 that's actually a great idea. I'd be very interested in seeing if the owners were capable of keeping up the new training techniques with their dogs. I believe, most of the time, it's the humans that need the training. Lol.
Another excellent GSD training video!! Thank you, No Bad Dogs crew. A friendly note to the owners- Tom is directly on point when he brought up the training mindset, which needs to be “What can I do to modify this behavior”, not, “Why can’t Buzz do x,y, or z”. If you need any encouragement , I think your family is capable of learning the techniques necessary to train Buzz and I think Buzz is capable and even eager to work under your guidance. Tom showed you the reins- it is your decision to take ahold of them. Be patient and please don’t give up on the training. -another reactive GSD Dad
I just love how positive he is with every single person. No matter how bad they are, how delusional, how many crazy things they've done before coming to him, and even how little progress they make in the session... he always mentions the positives that they are doing or have done. Anyone who has tried dog training knows the hardest thing is the owners. The dogs are easy and will follow what you say and love it.. It is the owners that mess up, don't listen, have bad attitude etc...
So glad you pointed out the dog is overweight. People need to be told -"you are killing your dog"! What are they thinking not exercising the poor creature, no wonder he's frustrated. He doesn't seem to know anything, have they made any effort with him?
Love this channel!!! I have a 1 year GSD and Tom has helped me soooooOoooOooOoo much 👏🥰 Ive been watching you guys for years (since the times when you didn’t use a mic lol) and I’m so proud at how high quality the editing and footage is now. Great work!!
Buzz's body language and panting when stressed reminds me so much of my super reactive mutt Mia during difficult training sessions. I have also felt intense frustration at times, just like this owner. I constantly have to remind myself that the biggest variable that slows down my dog's progress is me. She can only do what she knows, and I have to be very focused on being clear with what I am asking her to do. I always pick up something new with these videos. Thanks for all you do Tom and team.
And a lot of people really don’t understand that German shepherds are a working dog. They are just like the Belgian malinois they have an intense prey drive and an incredible drive-in general. They should not be pets in my opinion unless you’re getting a temperament tested low drive, German shepherd that would be good for average pet home. People like this they get a GSD just because it looks cool, they get it overweight, then it develops issues like this because it’s not worked. People preach so much that Belgian Malinois can’t be pets but nobody ever considers that German Shepherd‘s shouldn’t be pets either. They need to be working dogs to be completely happy but of course if you have a low drive, German Shepherd they will be happy with daily 30 minute to 2 hours of exercise. My German Shepherd is not a pet and she gets six hours exercise a day because she needs it
@@maryjacobson2372 from all the professional videos I have watched on these two and many other breeds - I completely agree with your perspective, and I see that you understand the complexities and finer nuances of dogs. 💖 I have a herding dog, and as long as I keep him well exercised, he's a wonderful companion dog. I also have a rescued puppy who is amazing with high energy and drive. Again, as long as I train her, exercise her and provide sufficient mental stimulation, she is an incredibly fun pet. 💖 😊 🙆🏻♀️
Really shows how owners holding onto fear when they’re handling their dogs can really transmit down the leash. When the owner was tense, so was the dog. It took the owner letting go and having faith that he wouldn’t react, to repair their relationship
I feel for these folks and the dog. Everyone is unhappy. You did an impressive job helping these people learn. Not an easy process for people that have never had a pet. Kudos for their efforts.
Yep, the most frustrating part of this video was how the mom wanted to put in ZERO effort in helping her dog. Just wanted to give up immediately because he wasn’t perfect in 2 hours.
I'm glad this vid shows the frustration owners can have. I def feel like her some days. The counter perspective is a great reminder that your dog doesn't yet understand what you want. Thank you!
Love the multiple videos of different reactive dogs, same or similar breeds, and how they respond differently. Kudos for calling out other videos trying to twist training progress.
I know this is an old video but man, were 1 week into raising a 5 month old puppy and he’s mostly very good but has some issues were working on. I’ve been following your videos and trying to replicate your training and the information you give is priceless. I appreciate how raw and honest your videos are and I’m confident our pup will be the best boy following your advice! Thank you so much for sharing these videos with us! 🙏
LOVE this video! One of my top 3 favorites! Your no nonsense, kind and caring (for both the dog and owners) way of talking to the owners was refreshing! You mentioned over and over that the final outcome will depend on them - SO TRUE! I agree with you Tom---When will people wake and smell the roses that dog training videos are being taken waaay out of context! What kind of brand are they making for themselves and their business?
Tom, I am very thankful I found your videos. Watching your videos has helped me tremendously with my dog who all of the sudden became aggressive towards my other dog. I cannot thank you enough for posting your videos to educate us who are dog owners. I was desperate with my dog's aggression, and looked for many resources to help her, but your videos made the difference. I am still working with her, but definitely much much better.THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Whether the owners kept him or not and I hope they did. This video is incredibly insightful, into dog training, interpersonal relationships, family dynamics, leadership, stress, marketing, emotional dynamics, followthrough. This video has enriched me. Thank you
Everytime I watch one of your videos with an anxious GSD, I learn so much. We have a 2 year 5 month old GSD who I've trained using your techniques. Thank you Tom!
The mom doesn't have a lot of patience, sorry to say it like that but it shows. Growing up in a house without dogs is no excuse, I grew up in a house without dogs and we got our puppy during COVID from a high-kill shelter. Yes it was difficult and i will be honest somedays you don't feel like you are making any progress. But you keep at it and one day the dog will follow every command you give. It also is a moment of joy and pride to see your dog transform into the vision you had for them. It's exactly like Tom said "They don't know what you want...you have to show them". I have learned a lot from his videos and i will continue to do so. Thank you Tom for all you do.
It’s so funny, I’ve watched so many, smugly saying “oh, these guys are the problem,” and now..I have a puppy that brought me to literal tears over his being bitey..and..my fault. Of course.
I’ve never seen a single animal, dog or horse, not be stressed the first time the behaviors are corrected. All you’re doing is replacing one behavior with another healthier behavior. Generally the behavior you want to correct doesn’t actually have any benefit for the dog, it might even cause more stress or destruction (chewing digging) - but when you correct the dog and redirect that energy to something productive or comforting, slowly that dog gains the tools to deal with his own stress. It only seems like the dog is getting more stressed during the initial correction because that’s all the dog has ever known and changing habits can be stressful. Changing them to good habits teaches the dog to self comfort and destress at the same time. It’s just so valuable. You should always always always work with a trainer for higher risk behaviors.
It is great to see how the families confidence changed as you worked with the dog. I am so happy you are able to help dogs and people in the way you do. Thank you so much.
This pup reminds me so much of my dog Harlow. Shepherd/Pit Bull mix. She's displaying the same exact reactivity, but only when new people are on our property. She loves meeting other dogs, she is fine with people in public settings as long as she makes the decision to approach them (people not approaching her). She is such a love bug, loves to snuggle, listens very well in contained settings. I've worked with one trainer and from watching your videos I'm trying to implement more things into her routine to build more trust and get her to understand that when I say that a person is okay, she doesn't need to be in fearful/high alert mode. You're the best! These videos really give me hope and keep me going.
Buzz is a great student, and Tom is so precise and patient training both fur baby and handlers! I have a 2 year old male GSD that Has noise phobia, he is coming along very slowly so I understand how difficult it can get especially When you have a large dog that bolts when hearing squeaky brakes ect. Buzz just needs that clear direction Which Tom brought to him. I see a Great dog here! Good luck to the owners you have the tools and Don’t give up you have a beautiful loyal forever friend in Buzz.
It's such a hard pill to swallow when an owner realizes the problem is them and not the dog. It's very humbling, but truth hurts sometimes. Way to go, Tom and Buzz's family. ❤
That mother was too much. I completely understand she’s upset at herself more then anything because she wants a dog who just does what she says and she wants to not make ANY changes to how SHE thinks it’s to be done. HOWEVER her dog needs are completely different and she being the human owner needs to step up to the plate and learn how to be with her dog. Take some accountability for her own actions. Some responsibility for her life choices would be nice. She needs to learn not the dog. The dog caught on very quickly. It was obvious to me she was the problem as to why the dog wasn’t listening to her. It’s because as we all saw she was doing it ALL WRONG. She is a grown adult and she needs to put her ego aside and LEARN how to handle her dog PROPERLY. That’s a beautiful dog right there and he loves his family. Thankfully he can’t understand that she was just talking about abandoning him. I have a lot of respect for this dog trainer, how he can sit there hearing that BULLCRAP from her after not following his instructions to THEN blame the DOG!! For HER errors!!! Such love in your heart man for those animals. Thank you for helping so many dogs live much happier and let’s face it, much safer lives when their humans are more knowledgeable on how to handle them. 🙏🙏🙏
I think this situation is more complicated. She never wanted the dog, and the husband should have respected that. Now it's a big mess. German Shepherd ain't a goldfish, they're a lot of work. Bad breed for this family.
Thank you Tom for this video. As a family with 2 GSD's and a 9 month old foster, I see reaction in Buzz and not aggression. Our puppy is giving me a run for my money and this video will help I'm sure. Thank you again.
It's so stressful having a reactive dog but I love how you talk to the owners because I know there's not a guaranteed fix. It's alot of training for both owner and dog.
The rant on stress. That was one of the most inspiring things I've seen in awhile! I love how you got kind of carried away on that topic and ultimately turned it into a teaching moment for the audience. Really great job!
Never give up on your dog. Having a dog like this who is a working breed they need that exercise. Keeping a working breed of dog in a back yard makes them like this. I can’t stress enough that working dogs need to work. I’ve got a border collie mix at home who i adopted at 6 months of age. He’s now 6. It’s taken a long time and it was hard work but it was well worth all the blood sweat and tears. In my case we finally found a trainer that was great for not only my dog but me. I realized that I have a very sensitive dog and because of how he used to be with reactivity I was getting tense and anxious. I realized that by me being tense and having a sensitive dog he was reacting because of how I was feeling. It’s never easy but every dog has the ability to be trained when they have a great trainer.
As a future dog trainer By watching Toms videos I’m learning how to deal with the people and best explain to them what they’re doing wrong, because dog training is easy…. Getting the owners to face reality and stop living in lalaland is the hard part. Dogs aren’t computers where you install stuff and stays that way.. it’s a living thing and need maintenance
"You have to over come these things, and it takes time," So many people need to hear this. To often do people send their dogs to a trainer for, in this case, 3 days and expect it to change everything in said amount of time. It takes way longer then that, along with dedication.
First thing I thought was the dog is over weight. So many German Shepherds not getting the training they need it seems. This dogs water intake is not normal. I's be having him checked out at the Vets. Great work Tom.
This dog's mannerisms reminds me almost exactly of my Berner. We got him at 3 months and he's had anxiety problems since we got him. He's 1 now and we are still working on reactivity towards people and animals. Otherwise, he is an amazing pup. Your training has helped us so so much! We were told to put him down by 3 different people because he is "aggressive" you have really helped us make strides in progress with him, and with ourselves. This experience has really taught me patience!!
I'm always so impressed with the way you handle and teach the owners. You are an incredible dog trainer and I have learned alot from you! Thank you! And thank you for saving so many dogs lives.... you are so inspiring:)
Awesome video . I was really upset with the mom especially her comment about believing humans and animals shouldn't live under the same roof!!! It's a dog NOT A CHICKEN OR A HORSE ! SORRY but that mentality is why she wanted to get rid of the dog in my opinion. Dogs will do what you want them to if you let them know EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT ! IFthe dog doesn't know what you want it's not too smart to expect them to be mind readers !!! The one daughter was awesome she did it perfect you can tell she loves Buzz! The father said it exactly 💯 % he's training us not the dog. While people may feel uncomfortable watching a dog being totally stressed it's way better than that dog paying with its life for something it didn't know what they wanted from it . I have watched tons of Tom Davis's video's and think for such a young man he's got a great understanding of what it takes to make people understand that they are the ones failing their dog by being frustrated and giving up on a dog that doesn't understand because they didn't make it clear what they wanted. Also loved the dog using his paw to shove the empty water bowl towards Tom !!! I actually watched more than once cause the first time I didn't believe the dog actually did it !!! I laughed the 2nd time ans watched once more just to laugh again ! Tom's reaction???... OK buddy I got you ! Loved it.
One of the best leash aggression / leadership videos I've seen. I am working on training my Belgian Malinois that I rescued from my local animal shelter. She's about 8 months old and suffers from severe anxiety when it comes to other dogs and certain loud noises. She has made so much progression and having videos like this have been the biggest difference.
also: i'd say he's reactive! its nice that you ask if people think that the dog is reactive or aggressive while educating on the difference. great stuff!
i've had dogs before, but this is my first time with 2 german shepherd pups, one is a german shepherd/dutch shepherd mix & SUPER intelligent! my dad had working dogs, including a police dog in the past, so i thought i'd be more prepared, but it wasn't the case from bad advice w/ vets to not so great trainers. honestly, your videos have helped me so much to understand them better with their reactivity! it's def about training people to understand how dogs think and work while also teaching the dog what they need to do. my childhood dog would listen to anything you told her, she was smart, sassy, and sweet, but she was older and trained when we got her. i'm working with a trainer for reactivity currently so he can catch what i may be doing wrong in my handling and training with them. thanks to videos like these and the wonderful trainer i'm working with, i'm able to be better prepared and the dogs have come so far in just a few sessions! it is SO rewarding and our relationship is better than ever! no bad dogs for sure!!! love to see how you educate people! thank you so much!! :">
The dog seems scared and confused - so reactive, not aggressive. Ty so mch for these vids, has helped us so mch with our rescue Dobie mix who has separation anxiety.
amazing video Tommy exactly what I dealt with when my doggie was young vet saying keep him close and don't socialize alot because he hasn't had all his shots it caused him to be reactive for the wrong reasons. But he's doing better now I just have to get him less reactive to people and dogs. ugh
Great video instructing & managing the owners expectation & frustration. You could see the intelligence & willingness of this GSD almost immediately when Tom took Buzz & even though Buzz had no idea what was expected & was stressed you could see him "check in " w/Tom looking directly at him for guidance & leadership. Congrats to family for working hard in their training and commitment to Buzz.
My Rottie is 17 months old and knows all commands even has his CGC, but the minute I relax on any command he will try and take over. Training is everyday. I wish this family luck! I love my 2 Shepherds, they are extremely smart and very trainable!
Such a wise man. I have literally taken to holding the idea of "NO BAD DOGS" close, and seeing how (much!) it applies to the greater world around me. 🤯😵💫🤓
Tom you are so truly kind ❤, u really know how to talk to people telling their truth in such a nice way that they just hav to understand the problem comes from them and not the dog ! Such a shame to see this beautiful dog overweight, it does tell a lot about them. Anyway good on ya mate u r amazing 👏
I have learned so much from you that, I was able to change my Amstaff from being a aggressive to being a good leash walker, I never thought he would turn out like this. I must say you are a great trainer and thank you for your time in helping everyone with the best of your knowledge. God bless you and your family have a great day ya'll. 🇺🇸. This is for Buzz 👊👌
My operated puppy walked for 4500 miles today and he is doing great and thanks to you my dog is insecure too working on it thank you so much 😊 greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
This is my favourite video to date. Simply because this is what it looks like for so many people and the validity of the points you are making. Fav one was about people taking stress out of context to bash trainers and good practices. This is what real training looks like! Build a foundation and learn what you need to be doing to teach your dog. It’s a shame a lot of people give up and think results come quick.
I really appreciate whole family efforts to learn skills they need to develop to make dog's life better. Me being as a dog owner and having a family we guys have zero knowledge about training and I can feel that pain and dispointment to self when you want to do everything but you are failing at doing it.😢
