This brings back memories -- I ran the two 1570 IMAX projectors at Universal Studios Hollywood for the Back to the Future ride. It used a loop cabinet instead of platters, and I'll never forget the chug-chug-chug sound of those projectors. They were installed in 1993 and decommissioned in 2007 when the ride was closed to convert to the Simpson's ride. They were certainly beasts! Man, those 4K lasers are massive!

Very interesting video. Despite everything , still the disappearance of the film . Technically, Imax 70/15 is superior in quality to digital projection. Same thing for 35mm and 2K. Everything has been done to make it less expensive for the studios and exhibitors. Really a pity, but film is not dead. It remains the best quality in capture and especially in permanent backup.
@bighands69

I am not against there being digital theaters to bring down costs and to make it easier for movies to be shown but the theaters should also offer a special experience. So that should mean that film is offered as well to customers for for the big special movies. I would have prefered to have seen Dune on 35mm film than on digital. The same for Top gun. I am not talking about the cameras in terms of film but celluloid projection so the movies could still be shot on digital cameras.

70mm to 4k sounds like a downgrade but 4k laser offers better contrast, hdr, & wider color gamut that 70mm film projection can't offer. Sacrificing image resolution & detail for better color quality is still worth it. Edit: the resolution of dual laser projection was actually 6k.

@@anoopjose6208 Ha! The source is 4k and most imax movies aren’t even shot in 4k anymore anyway. The entire imax laser system is incapable of playing back 8k media. The 2nd projector is only used to soften the image slightly so you can’t see the pixels. It’s also used for 3D which is a dead thing anyway. When Imax sold its soul to millionaires seeking to make money, the format died. There is no better quality format than 15 perf 70mm. Resolution is upwards of 12k at the print. It died due to IMAX not having anything to charge their theaters for since the film projectors were bullet proof. So make a new format that requires constant updating, charging theaters millions of dollars every few years to update, way more then the salary of projectionists and dilute the format so it’s nothing special. Then charge 2x the ticket price. It worked for a while but it’s not working anymore. Now everyone regrets getting rid of their film projectors and to top it off IMAX is making new film cameras. The battle for film is not over yet.

I knew the projectors themselves were huge and looked somewhat like this, but holy crap there's like 17 million other giant components to a movie theatre I never realized were there. Like the speakers behind the screen... how do those not cause a resonation or ripple effect on the screen? And the physical storage banks and hard drive servers sheesh. The generator or transformer or inverter or whatever it was... Also wonder how much heat these units must put out.
@KingdaToro
@KingdaToro 2 года назад
The screen is what's called "acoustically transparent", it's full of tiny holes, too small to see from the seats, that let the sound through. You can see them if you walk right up to it. The thing that puts out the most heat by far is the actual lamp (lightbulb) for the projector, as it uses at least 5000 watts. Its heat is exhausted out through the roof, similar to a clothes dryer. The IMAX lamps are 15000 watts, and have to be water-cooled, air cooling isn't enough.

IMAX theaters should really have a rotary woofer as standard equipment. Ordinary subwoofers fall off sharply below 20 Hz, rotaries are the only thing that can effectively cover the 0-20 Hz range.

@julianklietz6558 2 года назад
@@KingdaToro I'll paypal you 1000$ if you find me a woofer that can produce 0hz
@KingdaToro
@KingdaToro 2 года назад
@@julianklietz6558 As I said, a rotary woofer. It's a subwoofer that uses a rotating fan, instead of a cone, to move air. Like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E7Bkrypxzs4.html The pitch of the fan's blades is controlled by an ordinary subwoofer voice coil, so they pitch back and forth, and push air into and out of the listening room, according to the audio signal. They're able to effortlessly cover the entire 0-20 Hz range because the fan makes more revolutions per cycle of the audio signal as the frequency drops. If you were to feed DC (0 Hz) to an ordinary subwoofer, the cone moves in or out and stays there doing nothing. If you were to feed DC to a rotary woofer, the fan's blades would pitch one way or the other and stay there, and the fan would constantly push air into or pull air out of the room. So, yes, it can indeed do 0Hz. It's all about excursion. That's the distance through which a speaker can move, and it's what limits normal subwoofers to about 20Hz. But with a rotary, the "excursion" isn't the distance the cone can move, but rather how far the fan can turn during each cycle of the audio signal. At 20 Hz it will only do about half a revolution, but at 1 Hz it'll do 13 revolutions. The effective excursion increases as the frequency decreases, which is exactly what you want in a subwoofer. And at 0 Hz, it has effectively infinite excursion.
@julianklietz6558
@julianklietz6558 2 года назад
@@KingdaToro It can produce a 0hz tone?
@KingdaToro
@KingdaToro 2 года назад
@@julianklietz6558 Yes. A sound wave is just air moving back and forth at a certain frequency. A 0Hz "tone" is just air moving in one direction continuously. Of course it can do that.

@HughDenbigh

IMAX stands for maximum image, the largest screen possible with the highest resolution possible. To upgrade doesn’t necessarily mean technically a better image, open to debate, but rather a more economic mix of present technology to maintain a business into the future.

They are screen shakers and they cause the screen to vibrate a little to reduce the hotspot (glittering effect) on a silver screen. Without screenshakers that screen would look like a Twilight vampire.

@@andreasvogler1875 omg! this makes so much sense. we went to a cheap movie theatre once and it had this glitter effect. I was like WTF. Not only that, but the entire movie was pretty dim. Terrible experience. However, for the price, I guess you get what you pay for.

How many upgrades may come 2k, 4k laser etc etc but no one can match the quality and resolution of 35mm And 70mm film print quality
@HughDenbigh
@HughDenbigh Год назад
Well your probably right, but you should realize that the reason for technology change is seldom about quality but rather economics. With that most people wouldn’t recognize differences or care how a image lands on the screen. If the subject is stimulating, everyone is happy, the money is made.

Hi, I left after the 4K Laser was installed, at that time all the 1570, support equipment and film library were still in the booth but not in use. This was over six years ago, with it all just sitting and the Laser fully engaged, I would say there are many reasons 1570 will never be seen again at this theatre.
@TEDodd
@TEDodd 2 года назад
Sad. Laser still doesn't look as good as 70mm and there's a lot of 70mm footage thag won't be remastered for laser. An experience lost to time for no good reason. They already had it setup to swap between 70mm smd xenon, just keep that and show 70mm where applicable.
