I don't think it changes things for today--but perhaps for the future. It is interesting to note that the core nations have been core nations for many decades (in some cases, centuries). This tells us that once power is gained, it is not easily let go. I do agree that debt (national and personal) is dangerous, but I also assert that debt comes and goes dependent on the world's financial market, much of which is controlled by the wealthy nations.

Because of the title of this video I thought you would expand more on the whole World Systems Theory, not just Wallerstein's three tiers. I'm really confused on his first two tenets, and the video didn't help on that. But your analysis of his third tenet (the three teir one) was fine, so thank you for that.

Yes, that's right. For various reasons, Nepal is in the periphery. Note that Wallerstein's categories are fluid, meaning that countries can move, but their movement is very slow in most cases.

Hello. Thanks for this succinct, clear explanation. There is one element that is not mentioned in this piece which spoke a lot about peripheral debt. It so happens that the debt has 'come home'. That is, it is developed nations that are massively indebted today (both governments and individuals. Does this not change Wallerstein's schema?
@vaska1999
@vaska1999 Год назад
Does it, though? Core nations, immensely indebted as they are (especially the USA), are not about to pay off their debts to their debtors. China holds most of US debt, yet this works to make China dependent on the States rather than the other way round.

No, not exactly. While Wallerstein's work is fluid, meaning that countries can/do change categories, China (and India) do not have enough characteristics of core nations to be in this category. China still has a large rural population who live in poverty, and they also have issues with human rights violations which would preclude them from being in the core category. China is moving toward the core, but until they address these issues, they remain semi-peripheral. Hope this helps, Debra.
@alisterlaban9805
@alisterlaban9805 3 года назад
There's a certain level of dissonance with your statement... If human rights violations played any role, 500 years of invasions, genocide, looting and pillaging would easily preclude the authors of such atrocities from the "core" category. Particularly, as you've just explained and as evident, the system perdures...

If all the truth that is presented by academic fellows was adopted and implemented in the real life situations i think the world would be a better place to live in than it is now because of the unfair relations that exist especially between the so called developed countries and the developing countries.

Now that we a clear understanding about the problem, what is the solution? It appears to me that those nations that are dependent upon the "core" nations = (White), will continue to stay in that position unless and until the "core" nations find a way to exploit them in such a way as to benefit them. Which brings me to another very telling point - Africa is not even listed as "Periphery". The message is clear; Africa, at least for the foreseeable future has NO CHANCE of becoming independent. Why? My theory is this: The "core" nations cannot survive without the natural resources Africa supplies to them. Although, in Wallerstein's view Africa is dependent upon these "core" nations, IMHO the reality is the opposite. Peace.

Their both semi periphery and less so for China since they don't export labor to other countries but labor is imported by core countries. This happens due to the country having a communist government and 70% of businesses there being nationalized.
