Imperial Warlords Highlight the Real Problem Within the Galactic Empire 

Basically the Empire's main problem was that Palpatine was a Sith. Not only was the emperor paranoid sadistic backstabbing power hungry lunatic but this mentality trickled down to his officers and even regular men. So when Palpatine died without ever appointing a successor, the empire became a jungle where the animals began to rip each other to pieces.

At least one of those Warlords was pretty much a pirate king, openly talking about the vast riches they could all be making by raiding the Republic's shipping lanes.

The imperial remnant is super underrated. I love the tension and uneasy alliances from the expanded universe. Glad Mando is finally including more Warlords than just Gideon.

In the lore, that was the intent of the way he built the empire. So that if he fell... the empire would fall without him. It was a spite thing

I absolutely loved the inclusion of Imperial warlords and especially the legend himself Captain Pelleaon, hopefully we’ll see some more familiar faces from the EU in the future. Perhaps Zsinj, Daala, Harrsk, The Circle of Twelve Grand Admirals, Empire of the Hand, and more warlords will appear!

I thought it was really interesting that Hux was there since he's serving Sloane now and creating the First Order. Maybe the First Order wants Thrawn and the Remnant to destroy each other so the First Order can swoop in and clean up any survivors.

They didn't have a full direction of projects from a single leader and not a single leader to report to but multiple people independently as their own bosses. Each leader with their own projects and reasons. Ultimately which is their demise but which is why Thrawn is so crucial to be leading the new Empire as he's most feared and respected leader the Empire had after Endor.

The EU goes so far into depth with this, with imperial Admirals becoming warlords, fighting amongst themselves, while others where trying to uphold the Empire. Legends was amazing.

I would love if palleon thinks thrawn is coming back on the side of the empire, but instead comes back with the chiss expansionary defense fleet and is neither an ally of the new republic or Empire. Thrawn could realize the Empire was too evil and too corrupt but also see the new Republic as too weak. I could see him creating his own empire of the hand like in legends but with a new take on it. It could be made of former good imperials, Jedi, and new republic/ resistance that join him. I would love to see in the ahsoka show thinking he is the bad guy but we end up teaming up with him to save the chiss from the grysk. This could be why we don’t see ahsoka or sabine or ezra in the sequels, they could join Thrawn.

Palpatine didnt die without designating a successor. His successor threw him down a chasm while he fried his personal life support systems and all other trusted members of his inner circle died on the the first death star.

I view the situation in the galaxy as something akin to the aftermath Chinese (Xinhai) revolution, the imperial Regime was overthrown but much of the countryside is controlled by various warlords who were Governors/Commanders of the former regime. They not only reject the new government but also squabble with each other for power, but lack the means to threaten national government, but that government itself lacks means to exert authority over all its territory do to its own internal weakness, but the national government itself has the balance of power largely in it favor despite its problems.

The big irony is Palpatine wasn't killed by Luke or the rebellion. He basically set himself up to be killed and his pride clouded any force power that would make him realize it. So operation cinder is even more dumb because it punished loyal imperial worlds for his own failure.

I was watching Pelion like a hawk.😄 If they’re doing New Jedi Order then they might be tempted to adapt the Yuzhang Vong invasion and the Star Wars Galaxy uniting to fight them with “good” Imperial Remnant. Main thing he’s known for is that and ending the Galactic Civil War. Plus, you could also adapt Jaina Solo becoming Empress with Fel to perhaps putting Rey into that role.

Love that we get to see more imperial warlord, but yeah all they want is more power.

The problem with Palpi's rule is that he had no end goal (unless we count Uzhan Wong invasion which I don't like on many levels), he had a goal of destroying the Jedi and let him, self proclaimed sith, rule the Galaxy, and he brought some order in the beginning years of his rule (not to forget his aid and manipulations in CIS and GR conflict) but then he kinda did nothing and just messed around with no big plan in mind.

Yes, and the only ways to bring these Warlords together are: 1. Be the Emperor 2. Be EXTREMELY good at your job (Thrawn) 3. Screw it. Kill the lot of them (Dalaa).

A lot of the bravest and most competent of the Imperial Navy and Imperial Army (etc) were killed in the Galactic Civil War. Imperial losses at Endor and Jakku were particularly harrowing for them, because some of their best officers were lost. The _Executor_ alone had a massive proportion of the Empire's best and brightest (and no, Admiral Firmus Piett wasn't necessarily one of them; though he was a talented survivor and climber of the ranks, staying on Vader's good side) ISB Admiral Garrick Versio was arguably a more competent and effective high ranking officer, though he was lost on Jakku, going down with his ship (the Eviscerator) 225,000 of the Empire's best and brightest died on the _Executor_ (alone) over Endor. The Imperial Navy were suffering massive losses galaxy wide in spite of inevitably, surely inflicting very severe losses on multiple rebel forces simultaneously all over the galaxy. The more the atrophy of high quality officers continued, the worse the death spiral became. And although I dislike the whole Operation Cinder malarkey for a variety of reasons (it's way too predictable, and Deus Ex Machina in my view), canonically (sadly) yes there was that madness, too (like destroying Vardos and other Imperial loyalist worlds when the actual Palpatine would leave them for the rebels to take at as high a cost as possible, just out of spite; not auto-seppuku them just for the sake of making some bizarre point to further highlight Palpatine is a sick individual; yes, we get it, and he does not care, but he isn't that dumb. Well, at least, before The Rise Of Skywalker happened, but by that point all bets were off the writing got so atrocious) Anyhow, the point is, the Imperials ended up being reduced to their lesser officers and standards obviously slipped, with extremists like Brendol Hux after Captain Pellaeon retreated from the Battle of Endor (as did Admiral Versio, himself as one of the last to leave, putting his ship in grave risk though for good reason, lurking in the debris field of the DSII until his daughter's Inferno Squad was ready to evacuate Endor after their mission was finished) The likes of Pellaeon, Versio and of course, Grand Admiral Thrawn, were vitally important to the Imperial remnants, and yet, they and so many others were forced to concede so much of Imperial space. It's ridiculous that the Galactic Empire allegedly collapsed 1 year and a month after Endor. They'd more likely last a few years in an increasingly fractured and mutually destructive state. Thrawn's return will need to be done properly. The Seventh Fleet could be far more powerful than people think currently. However, as Filoni etc seems determined to walk lockstep with the dreadful sequels, he is steering things to be aligned with making that make any kind of sense (he will fail to, categorically) That said, Thrawn could really make a powerful impact on the galaxy. Obviously a lot of that will be saved for the Ahsoka series with the questionable, risky, Marvel-like attempt to have him be the Thanos of Star Wars. Coming along like a wrecking ball into multiple TV series. We're just getting the foreshadowing of what he'll do next. Expect the Imperials to be kicking serious New Republic backside uphill and down dale. Though because of the Mandalorian element to this, maybe they'll suffer an initial setback on Nevarro (I guess) though how Nevarro will stop Thrawn even if the Mandalorians unite en masse, is debatable. Thrawn will likely stick it to the Imperial warlords as well, knowing they are untrustworthy. Look at Pellaeon, clearly knowing what is up and not trusting any of them. Least of all, Moff Gideon. Pellaeon was the most mild-mannered, at the Shadow Council (not at all an edgy name for bad guys in the secret bad guy club) Even so, I think people will underestimate Pellaeon (let alone Thrawn, his boss) and then he'll suddenly come along and thoroughly kick the stuffing out of anyone in his way in a naval battle. But I wouldn't hold my breath for that. Can't show the Empire being too competent now eh Filoni! P.S - The only Imperial worth a damn in the sequels (and that includes Palpatine, very sadly, due to his mindless portrayal - as much as it was great to see McDiarmid going all out with his most well-known character again) was a certain Captain Moden Canady. I like him in that, he was an old Imperial in First Order service, visibly 'done' with all the newbie First Order know-nothings around him. He was barking orders at them because he was genuinely experienced as a veteran from the Galactic Civil War, and although he was killed, he died like a true Imperial, on the bridge of his own warship, without fear. He faced death sternly and stoically, as the young First Order crew under his command understandably panicked. It makes one wonder if he pitied them or felt ashamed. Although, he was only a minor character and killed off all too quickly (along with an obscene number of officers, Stormtroopers and crew, on that _Mandator IV_-class Siege Dreadnought, the Fulminatrix aka flying Dorrito), he was still clearly interesting. I read up his character and I was actually impressed. One of the rare wins of the sequels. Someone actually had the thought at least to pad out his character backstory a bit. Just a shame nobody cared enough to show that character backstory and development on-screen except for the actor's perfect portrayal _for_ that backstory. It is entirely convincing that he was an old Imperial, sick to the back teeth with the upstart First Order wannabes under his command. He sounds and looks so tired of their BS. Again, I liked that. But there was something else, too; he had an almost paternal presence there, and was just done with their inexperience and yet didn't want them to die. He may have disliked them for their exuberant arrogance - coming from a time when, yes, arrogance wasn't unknown to the Imperial Navy, though it was at least professional, most of the time - yet he wasn't leading them poorly (other than targeting the planetary base first, which wasn't his fault, just bad writing making him do it) Although the entire scene was a mess with the defences of the massive ship being taken out too easily, and the destruction of this 'fleet killer' being entirely contrived and unconvincing, I felt as though Captain Canady would have been an interesting figure if he'd been allowed to survive the first act of the film -.-' It was a shame. He was actually semi-competent and working for the First Order. That must have been a rare sight in that organisation. Then again, Allegiant-General Enric Pryde, almost looked as though he was going to be impressive, until he forgot how to fly up.

I think we forget the main goal of the sith, to cause pain and suffering. It makes them stronger. Why would he have anything set in stone. Organized chaos is how he controls the flow of suffering. If he dies it causes chaos and destruction. Plus the plan to destroy loyal worlds to cuase max suffering so he can re summon himself.

It's nice to see you go in depth with the Empire since its nice to see the deeper part of these organizations and how they're more than what they appear to be on the surface. The problem with the Empire is that it was just as much a madhouse as any Sith academy was. The moment the big daddy goes away, everyone wants to be him or form their own little kingdom. In Dark Empire and Crimson Empire, these yahoos betrayed the Emperor when he came back. Palpatine had the rebels by the ropes, it didn't matter how many times they killed him, he can respawn with clones, and his unifying presence alone was enough to keep the New Republic at bay. Yet some deep-state Imperial warlords who enjoyed the taste of freedom the rebels gave them after Palpatine's death on Endor were unsatisfied with his return, and so, they bribed his physician to poison the clone bodies the Emperor used, which led to him having to go full suicide mission to steal a body from the Skywalkers, which predictably ended in his demise. Once the Empire fell under Jedi leadership after the Second Galactic Civil War, the Empire became more stable, and the Jedi version of the Empire successfully lasted all the way to the end of the Legends timeline as the premier power in the galaxy, with the Sith half of the Empire being defeated and the Alliance reduced to a rump state that was ironically enough, ruled by a military junta led by a warlord.

And this is why evil never triumphs for long, as soon as the monsters in charge feel secure in their positions, they turn on each other. It's a waste of time and effort, which their enemies take advantage of, to devastating effect.

I cant be the only one who sees Sloane and Thrawn as the only competent not wanting their own personal fiefdoms leadership among the post Endor remnants? For the record my view of Sloane comes from the Aftermath book series.

Those specialists could become the sycophants, though. Like how the term "czar" was adopted in the early 00's in regards to an appointed regulator. There's always going to be ego and bias in governance, whether dictator or democracy, so long as there is gains to be made for oneself at the expense of others, and so long as the citizens have enough to do in their own lives that it's untenable to devote time to shaping governance to be both ethical and accountable.

Ima be fr, I forgot abt this channel for like 6 years after loving it as a kid. Randomly stumbled upon it today, and I’m happy to see it’s still going strong :)

In Mandalorian chapter 23, Gideon was that competent leader. He actually delivered on his promises. And wasn't shy of admitting his own failures. Bo is the one who seeks leadership, but only have nice words to back up that leadership. And that is why she failed and Gideon won. But prior to chapter 23, she was the effective leader. She was solving actual problems and didn't bother much about delivering inspirational speeches. Because action is better than words. It even showed in chapter 22, where she paralyzed the head of security during one of such speeches/rants about how Count Dooku was visionary, with explanation "politics". Different writers delivered the opposite view on the same issue. Same thing happened in The book of Boba Fett. From the start, he was effective leader/problem solver, helping other people solve their problems. At the end, his character changed and he became the problem maker, while whining about how oppressed he is. And waiting for the help from the outside. While the effective leader, like Gideon from chapter 23, Bo from earlier chapters and Boba from the beginning of his book was the help from the outside.

One of the ways in which Palpatine ruled and kept his subordinates under control was by playing them off against each other, encouraging backstabbing, scheming and rivalries. This pretty much assured that in his absence things would quickly fall apart. Only he was too arrogant to ever consider the possibility.

So, what would you call the Galactic Republic during the Prequels and Clone Wars and the Separatist Alliance. Both don’t exactly have a completely united government, but they seem able to set aside their differences in wartime and unite. Clones, Droids, and Jedi aren’t backstabbers by nature and work together well. Separatist and Republic officers on the other hand are far more like Imperial officers.

Do we know everyone in the meeting with Moff Gideon or is it just him and Hux's dad and Thrawn's right hand that are known members

Some think that one of the point of Operation Cinder was to create suffering in true believers. Then use that disturbance in the Force (especially in the Dark Side) to empower Sidious spirit in Chaos. Chaos as in Star Wars hell were Sith go when they die (rather than rejoining the Force in Heaven?). So using all the Dark Side power created by Cinder to empower Sidious so he could break out of Chaos and return to the world of the living.

@Generation Tech, I have a question, if the Armorer is a Spy for Maul or the Empire, then would that mean that the Armorer is Rook Kast. The female Mandalorian warrior who led the Shadow Collective's super commandos during the Clone Wars alongside Gar Saxon and Almec. Because Last time I checked she participated in the Siege of Mandalore, but this led to defeat and Kast's capture at the hands of Bo-Katan Kryze. Which means she might still be alive by this time.

Becoming comfortable with Positions of Power is a Major topic you hit on. One that plagues modern politics. Also the reason why George Washington is so revered for his ability to step down as president after just two terms. A tradition, that while attempted, wasn't broken until FDR and then officialized in the 22nd Amendment. An Act which reputedly led King George III to have said that if George Washington relinquished the presidency after his second term (versus becoming a dictator/monarch) he would be “the greatest character of the age.”

One thing about the Empire is Palpatine, in true Sith fashion, intentionally set the Empire up to where he was the only person in it who’s power would be unchallenged and therefore it would fracture to pieces without him. The way the shadow council is operating is just the way we see the Imperial Remnant in Legends. From almost the moment the second Death Star was destroyed, various high ranking Imperial officers staked their own claims. We see Grand Admiral Grunger and Grand Admiral Pitta declaring themselves warlords and gathering forces. I mentioned those two specifically because they highlighted the Imperial Remnant’s worse quality in Legends: they were the Empire in name only and saw no reason to even pretend to work together in the name of the Empire. Really, it was a bunch of ex-Imperial personnel and equipment serving the personal goals of the local leader. None of them really had any goals towards reestablishing the Empire, merely solidifying their own power base and dealing with the New Republic as it got in their way. Thrawn in Legends, just like how canon is alluding to, was the only one who actually had the intelligence and power to unite the remnant into something resembling the Empire they came from.

Is this not a total retcon though? Thought the Empire collapsed in 1 year after Endor in Disney canon. Then there was the New Republic and 20/30 years of peace before the First Order appeared out of the Unknown regions according to the Sequel trilogy. How can there now be enough time for warlords to appear and be of any major threat to the New Republic? Also how can the First Order be organising itself while massive resources are being sequestered away by the Warlords we have and have not seen. This makes the emergence of the First Order even less plausible. At least the Old EU made sense by not having the Empire collapse immediately and have the New Republic emerge but have that occur over the course of a decade or more with multiple Imperial factions destroying themselves to clear the way for the Rebellion to sweep in and set up the New Republic.

There are so many plot contrivances to make the empire overly evil and incompetent.

The Empire wasn't designed to last in the long term unless Palpatine achieved immortality. The dysfunction was deliberate on many levels. There was no established succession. Vader was hated and feared by too many high-ranking Imperials to rely on the support of the military and civilians would never accept him as a new emperor. By setting his senior military against each other, Palpatine denied any one of them enough power to stage a coup. This is why Tarkin (who could be easily shot if necessary) was in command of the Death Star I rather than Vader, and why Palpatine kicked Vader off the Death Star II the moment he arrived and settled into his new throne room. Operation Cinder would cause the galaxy to hate the Imperial remnant, thus guaranteeing civil war. The entire Empire was designed to collapse without Palpatine.

Agree the Empire could have won after the battle of Endor but like in both timelines Admirals and other leaders from their own kingdom, in the legends timeline, the republic destroyed a a lot of those warlords, but left them open to Thrawn
