“If you can’t copy, how could you possibly reproduce an idea of your own in your mind?” How well said! Nowadays everybody is going all out for creativity and individuality but is not patient enough to make arduous efforts to gain controllable skills first. The result is unconvincing performance. This piece of extremely valuable advice goes far beyond guitar or any musical instrument playing. It is equally valuable for painting, sculpture, Chinese calligraphy, and many other categories of art.

Evan, I watched this video over a year ago and today I watched it again after attending David Russell’s master class. Now it makes sense what you say about practice plan, and solidify the mistakes by not tending to it in a structured way. Thank you so much again for your notes!

That bit about guitarists' "squeaks" is spot on. In the Sibelius notation program, the squeaks are put in between chord or position changes!

How come this video was posted one year ago and there had been only 661 thumbs up before mine? These are invaluable takeaways that can benefit everyone who plays the classical guitar. Thank you ever so much for sharing, Evan!

Thank you for sharing you experience Evan. That bit about singers doing the rubato and not the accompanist, is a great take away for me. Also kinda obvious, now that I think about it.

Thank you for the video! And ... I loved the bells sound. (Remember that in our bell towers in Spain, every 15 or 30 min you will hear it, with different sounds every time. It helps people in the villages to know what time is it without wearing a watch 😉)

yes, bad practice does not make perfect...perfect practice make music beautifully that people enjoy our music we played. slow practice to ensure every movement is correct to make the notes sing .

Lovely video. I did a class with DR at a festival in England many years ago and at the end, instead of taking his break before lunch, suggested we carried on for another half hour. My copy of Torija with his suggestions and fingerings is one of my prized possessions.

So cool Evan! Really looking forward to having David here at FSU next week. I've actually been seeing a bit of research in support of the outward mindset over an inward recently so it's great that he talked about it.

Yes the squeaking is something that every player should start taking in consideration the moment they start learning the guitar. Sometimes you see otherwise very talented players that seem to be totally oblivious on how much they squeak.

Thanks for making these! Each video is so interesting. This quote struck a "chord" with me, lol: "If you can't copy an idea, how can you possibly produce an idea of your own in your mind?" This reminded me of all the oil mastercopies we had to do in school (replicating a master work of say, Rembrandt). It was a great way to truly experience a visual idea by attempting to feel the same brushstrokes, visualize the same assembly of chroma/darks/lights, and maybe even feel a similar emotion as did the master. These experiences then become a permanent part of our creative toolkit, and ultimately become our very own through practice. Love the vlogs, keep it up!

Thank you for this video! Its kind of weird that I had to learn about David Russells ideas through somebody else, because he never shares these things in interviews (always joking and always avoiding practical advice). So this is awesome.
