Hah, this is exactly what I did. Saw all of 5 seconds and my problem was solved, but because it was as helpful as it was, I left the video playing for the view count, etc.
Dropping the folders on the left side is the key! Dropping it where the media is just ignores the folder structure. I remembered watching this video a few months back and could't remember the "trick". Thanks! :)
Found this one! I just commented on another one of your videos asking for direction to this one. Now I'll keep looking for the equivalent of FCPX to Smart Collections and Keywords. An extra comment here can't hurt, so thanks for this one too.
You are not going to believe it, but actually the most useful for me was your tiny note on how to undo the full screen window!! That was really driving me crazy and I could not find how to do that!! Am I too basic? But also thanks for the folder structure thing that will definitely improve my organization.
I've been using Post Haste (free for both Windows and Mac) to create the folder structure for my projects based on a custom template with great results - I can't recommend it enough! Not only will it create the whole folder structure for you, but it'll also create & rename file templates within the folders. I use that for creating a Resolve project archive that I can restore into Resolve's project window, that starts me off with a timeline containing all the boilerplate stuff, along with a few comps. The only downside is that the Windows version is lagging behind the Mac version, but it's still perfectly usable.
In my case drag&drop is not allowed. It used to work but now instead of +copy sign I see red circle of not allowed sign. I'm on windows. Is there any setting to activate/deactivate drag&drop. I used to copy clips from file folder directly into tho timeline. Now it doesn't work. Do you know the solution?
Thanks, For some reasson it wont work if i drag a folder into the program- But it just works if i make a bin inside the "Master" tab as you said in the beginning of the video. Big thanks!
What would you import numerous, video/audio files/cards, recorded separately, that you then need to sync? Would you organise all the video and audio files, shot on the same day, into one date referenced folder/bin in your computer first and then import that? I can't work out how to sync video and corresponding audio files/clips if they are in imported into DR as separate bins.
I am on the free version of da Vinci 18 and I can’t drop any folders over the only way I can get video over is to import what am I doing wrong please help
Is there any way to create a hot folder in resolve? Like a folder where I can dump all the clips and it will be automatically imported in to the resolve project

Does anyone have an idea to to do this as a watch folder, so Da Vinci to replicate everything you do in say file explorer on the fly live no need to do manual. Helpful when a project adds media as a goes. Say event videography?
Hi! Does it not auto update? If I add additional media in those folders (in explorer) later, would that not auto update. and would I be needing to manually import them every time? Is there a workaround to this?
When I drag and drop a folder of 220 photos, all those photos show up a ONE photo thumbnail...DOH Not sure what setting I need to add multiple photos in one go without it pilling them all into one thumbnail (I can't pull each photo one at a time into the timeline when they are all piled together as one thumbnail)
So ... the Resolve database just contains POINTERS to the real-world disk locations of the folders and files that you have dropped within MASTER. No other data has been copied. ? Just making sure that large media files are not being duplicated all over the place.
Is there a way to keep this as standard? I.e. not related to a specific project. Say if I just want to map all the folders I have on my hard drives so that I can reach any of them at any time conveniently from within Davinci Resolve Studio?
Problem, if you update a folder, I know in reality that all the prerequisites should be in the folder/s, but say if you left something out by accident, it doesn't update the folder or does it?
Its importing all 220 photos as a Sequence!! that is pretty much useless...why? How to fix so they all get imported as individually selectable photos (much more useful)
If I add media, audio or graphics I like to add it as you described to my file structure on my drive. What is the best way if say you add a number of clips to your A roll folder to update Resolve? It would off course be great if this happened automatically but I know this does not happen.
Hi Alex, can you help. I have just swapped from PC to Apple and bought an Apple MacBook pro. And while I was installing Davinci studio for some stupid reason when it asked me for permission to look in my desktop files, I said no. so, when I click on media import it shows desktop top but won’t show any sub folders, I have tried to find the permission section. to change to yes, But I don’t know Davinci that well yet?
For footage from external drives, wouldn't it be better to import it directly into Resolve using the Clone Tool on the media page? In this way, original files would be verified upon copy, so you could prevent any problems down the road.
Seems like everything in the "Demo Project" should be at the top level... directly under Master. Just my thought. Because you are already in the "Demo Project" - unlike Final Cut which has the concept of a Library.... If "Master" in DaVinci was like Library I could see having a "Project folder" like you did. Anyway, it's not a big deal, I guess I just needed to leave a comment, LOL.
Am I right? By doing it this way you duplicate files like crazy. I mean..if I have a folder with a lot of music and I create a folder for my project and copy 5 songs to this folder I duplicate everything. (and so on for B-Roll, SFX, video files...) If you just link the bins to the file in the folder you just have a link to the original file and no copy. Saves a lot of space on the drives.
as a new user taking baby steps in video editing, and someone who loves both order and simplicity, this was just the ticket, thank you! 👍 One question, when I import media to Resolve (using this folder structure copy from OS method) is the content actually copied somewhere on my drive (i.e. duplicated) or does resolve just create pointers/shortcuts to the source media?
Hi Alex - thanks for this - I use bins etc but didn't know about dragging from file manager - one issue I have has been with the upgrades with the beta. I get my bins all nicely organised but when ever I do an upgrade (currently weekly) my bins disappear and I have to start again !! What am I doing wrong?? - thanks for all the great videos
Helpful as usual. In a related topic (and apologies if you’ve already done this) do you remove unused clips when you complete your project? In this demo you copied a file structure from your OS, but I assume there will be content that wou won’t use in the final. To save space and have a clean environment I try to remove the unused media, and if I can remember go into OS folders and put that unused media in a separate folder still under that project. It can then become b roll for another project. I’d love to learn how you manage files.
