This time I made something really weird! It's a sledge hammer with a soft brass face but it's connected with two dovetail in a way that is possible only via metal casting.

First off as a fellow craftsman and a master sheet metal worker journeyman whatever your background or trade education I have 4 years high school trade shop welding and 5 years of welding and metallurgy trade school with 20 years on job training, and I keep re educating myself and watching your videos with your skill set always amazes me and teaches me along the way. Might be an option for hammers for use in highly flammable environments (brass doesn't spark like steel does). Looks beautiful, very nicely done!

They are not cheap either. I broke a 30 - 32 in brass pipe wrench inside a resin tank on union and just beating it with wrench a brass hammer. Man my boss was not happy when I shown him the upper jaw broken in half.... He said that was a $900 wrench Blah blah blah. I said well you had better add $900 bucks to the bid or this job! Well Bronze It was but same concept... No sparks. But most flammable confined spaces they would want the entire head done. Just to keep a idiot from making the wrong choice of what side to strike with.

it's possible that there's an air pocket inside that didn't reach the edges. I don't think he meant for the metals to bond, but be secured entirely by the 'impossible' double dove-tail. I agree. Fantastic work.

Dear Mr B B, gesundheit. Love the finished hammer, actually it looked almost good enough before you started. Beautiful work. We always get a chuckle at your 5 x speed hammering. You work with such sure, confident moves. Is that good editing, or are you as gifted as we think? The only thing that can possibly be added is wood glue on the handle before the head goes on. Seals moisture out, no vibration. If the hammer isn't returning to work, please disregard the fussy glue bit. The two tiny brass wedges at 90° were wickedly cool!

Beautiful result. Did you pre-heat the steel piece before pouring the brass? I was trying to think of ways to reduce gaps between the steel and brass pieces, and getting the steel really hot seemed like it would help. I thought about maybe dusting it with some sort of flux or something to get the brass to wet to the steel more consistently? In the end, I'm sure the connection you made is very strong and in no danger of working loose. I was just thinking about those pesky little voids at the seam. I guess you could get a brazing rod and fill them in that way, but it feels like cheating!
@pedrolinscosta
@pedrolinscosta 2 года назад
Nice observation! Maybe preheating the steel and a "Flux interface" would optimize the project, which is already fantastic
@jacquespoirier9071
@jacquespoirier9071 2 года назад
it is my question too, I'm a bit reluctant to hit with the brass face as I should have the proof that the brass is well fused to the steel sledge. I would feel more comfortable if a layer of bronze have been brazed to the steel with a torch or TIG, the chances for a good bonding would be much better. of course, the preheating of the sledge add chances of success as just the shrinking of the cast brass is sufficient to break the bond between the different materials An ultrasonic non destructive test is the best way to evaluate the bonding of the cast brass to the sledge steel
