Hi, I'm a 28 year old girl wanting to learn the trade, and I can't say how happy and thankful I am that you uploaded this video, I learned TONS from it, lots of love from rainy Belgium! Hope you did well in the contest!
@@Collateralcoffee give her a break, it's likely a translation difference. I'm not familiar with Dutch or French but Italian uses "girl" for any female from puberty to well into their 30s and often beyond as long as you don't seem "old". "Woman" is very distant and something you use if you are strangers, being formal, or they seem a bit tired out or elderly.
@@Collateralcoffee I only use woman if they're clearly elderly. Colloquially in the US, girl is often used until they are married. Anyway, good luck to Ashtraygal on her journey in a trade that needs more talented people.
I’d say a little from column A and a little from column B. Us fans want to know what’s he’s doing and why. That’s why to me it’s some from A and some from B. It’s a fascinating process....as he said, “There’s a lot going on here”. Well done to Steve.
Tell your wife that your commentaries are well received. After a day of listening to what is happening in Washington it’s nice to hear from someone who knows what he is talking about. Keep up the great work.
One of the things I like best about your videos is how you go about making decisions. You never know what you'll come across inside the shoes, and it's interesting to see how you keep the big picture in mind as you choose your plan of attack.
What a great guy with the most positive attitude I have ever seen. You Sir, are a Great American👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Simply incredible workmanship, beyond master level!
Tell your wife we listen to you and are interested because your audience is also a little unsure of them selves and love to hear a master at work, who sometimes isn’t perfect. It lets us know it’s okay to make mistakes, and that even at a master level (as you clearly are) sometimes we have doubts. Life is trial and error. You are human and that’s what’s so endearing about you and your channel. I learn so much, not just about the craft, but about the mind set. Thank you!
Steve those are two of the most dramatic and involved restorations I've ever seen you do! You did a Ph.D. level job on them both! Good luck in the contest, I believe you will do well!
Unreal! Basically a pair of ruined shoes, lovingly dismantled, cleaned, dyed, nourished and rebuilt! Every step was an education and very enjoyable to watch. Class!
This video was impressive! Enjoyed learning about the anatomy of what makes quality shoes. This shoe is built like a tank the amount of elaborate sewing went into it. Lots of respect to you and many thanks to all your customers that keep your business successful. Hoping your children will continue the family business.
Brilliant job Steve, What is your wife talking about? Of course we are listening. Ha , I even answer sometimes. Wishing you all the best for the competition. T
When I was a teenager, I worked for Malanga Bros. Shoe Repair. It was a sweet little company where the craft was being taught and the shops were being passed down from generation to generation. Sadly, I think all the shops closed with the openings of Payless shoe stores on every corner, and I'm pretty sure that these artists all ended up working for Walmart. But, watching your video brought me back to a time in which quality outweighed quantity. Just for a moment I could smell the shoe repair shop. The leather, the rubber, the glues.... Ahhh, Thanks for the memories.
Steve, I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this video (and all your videos!). Somebody who’s not afraid to take on new things, who works with passion, humor, and total artistry, and who does it all by hand. You’re one of my heroes! A dying breed-artisan craftsmen who love chasing perfection. We need more of you! Thanks for being an example and an inspiration! You’re the best!
Your shop reminds me of my neighbor shoe repair when I was a child growing up in the 60's in South America. Those days our parents took the shoes to be repaired as many times as these needed. No new shoes until the old ones were really old. I use to see the master to work and I even remember the names of the tools he used. Your job is amazing, thanks for the wonderful video.
We are absolutely listening to you Steve. Millions of us are. You’re an amazing artist!!!!!! Your shoes are worth hundreds of thousands. Anybody who thinks otherwise has no clue about your worth
This is the most amazing shoe I have ever seen! The detail on the bottom is amazing. Those “v cleats” (I think that’s what you called them) are stellar in the shoe. I also loved how you did the one red, and the other pair were blue. It all screams, “style!” I know next to nothing about shoes, but I think I know excellent craftsmanship. You have it in spades, sir.
This is just amazing. I cannot believe the quality of Steve's work and the amount of talent and outright skill he displays. Not to mention solid dedication to a craft so sadly overlooked by our throw-away society. Thanks for creating and sharing, this seriously restores my faith that craftsmanship still have a place and more important, is greatly appreciated.
The commentary/explanations are a big part of the video. Helps me understand what is being done and why. It takes skill to keep up a running commentary with no one else there to help keep the flow going.
I for one am glad you do talk to the viewers. It let's us know about the process of repairing a shoe or handbag. It should make us appreciate the apparel more.
Wow.....and I mean WOW. Love the coloring and care to have the uppers bounce back. The soles of the sole, just, I mean.......WOW, no words to describe that. If I had a pair of those shoes....excuse me....works of art. They's be in a glass case. Simply wonderful to watch you work.
I have watched a good amount of hours shoe repair by now.. that norwegian welt, I had no idea. It is INSANE, what a beauty. Never seen it before and now I want nothing else. Eager to see the results of the contest!
Yes we do listen to everything you say all adds to the knowledge and the experience. Thank you Mr. Bedo and thanks for your wife letting you stay back and educate us fans.
Bedo just hopped up in my choices to watch, so I did, a few months ago, and I am now watching reruns. I love his channel!! What makes this so weird is that I am a 69 year old woman. So why am I watching shoe repairs? Because they're fascinating--especially when Steve does them!!! He also got me watching shoe polishing. It's a whole other world out there that I knew nothing about--and now I have my 72 year old sister watching, too!! Yay Steve! You're definitely our favorite in this genre.
As a fellow "clobberer" ( LOL) , I enjoyed this greatly. Norvegese' / Norwegian ----> Tip of the hat from a Texan, who has learned from Italian. Your father/grandfather, I hope is truly proud. Glad you are here. Thank you for your commentary and educational video. Some of your fans should know Vittorio Spernanzoni, Santoni, and Lattanzi. Congratulations on the "Silver" but, honestly . You're golden, man. Great respect from here.
Bedo! I want to be your friend! I know it sounds weird but you just sent like such a happy guy! I’m sure your friends love you! Thank you for being a breath of fresh air in this RU-vid craziness! FYI I love it when you laugh it’s contagious in a good way. Lol
I have always thought you are a master of your craft. When you said you loved Chris Cornell singing. My opinion of you has gone up another notch. He had so much more to give.
Hi Steve, I was watching this amazing restoration and I saw all the troubles you had using an awl to make the holes for the second row of stitches and I was thinking that maybe in the future you can try using a dremel tool with a very small bit to make the holes 😊
I have no idea why I watch all of his videos because I'm not a cobbler or anything other than owning a bunch of shoes but he's my favorite RU-vid celeb! Funny, educational, grounded, some asmr intertwined, and skilled like no other. Keep the videos coming. I love your passion for what you do.
You've done an absolutely brilliant job. Hope you won first prize. Really love the detail and professionalism one that shoe. From a wreck to a shining Ferrari. Love the blue ones too. 👍
I swear their is nothing you can't do Steve when it comes to leather...!A true artisan and "Master of Leather Works"...! You're being humble Steve but there's nobody better...! You definitely know what you are doing...! Love this..!!! Greg
Hi Steve, I love the style of shoe you chose for the contest, the intricate stitching along with the inserts used to contour the instep as well as the stair stepped effect to the sole make this an excellent choice to demonstrate your wonderful re crafting talents ! Add in the beautiful sole designs...you're #1 IN OUR BOOK ! On a side note I can't stop humming the theme song from Star Wars when you do the slow motion of the soles ! Lol GOOD LUCK MAN !👌👍❤
Great repair video. I wonder if the people that botched the first repair are watching this video and are cringing at their screw up. Keep up the great work, you are a Master. Thanks and stay safe.
I accidentally found a video of this guy on RU-vid and instantly stuck with him!repairing leather items is so joyful to watch.it’s nice to know that even old shoes, bags, wallets etc.can revive when a great leather lover is taking a good care of them!!!love this guy!!!by the way he’s very handsome too!!!excellent, amazing job!
I've never considered having a half sole fitted to a worn out sole, it always feels like a cheap cut and shut job but you could do mine any time if it's like the one you showed here. Great job!
OLD Leather Smith here, excellent as always Steve, I truly believe your a cordwainer especially with all your knowledge and experience . GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃
I am so amazed at the craftsmanship of all your work. You have a great sense of pride doing your very best in all your work and it always results in a great outcome. Not many people have that attitude anymore and just do enough to get by. I certainly love your videos and anxiously awaiting the next project. Thank you!
"First, you start with a last". Sounds like a trip to Bizzaro World... That Hammer Time at 33:10 was pretty cool! The damping of the material on the bench gave it a nice, muted quality. Would be fun to use that as a drum sound.
Steve. One day I plan to come visit you and see your shop! You do amazing work and are an awesome down to Earth, yet incredibly talented Cobbler! It comes across so well in your videos, because you are just being you. Cheers from Jacksonville, Florida! -Chris Browning
If you're gonna do a trip to Europe, go to Northampton in England where so many of the famous shoes are made. Be really interesting to see you do a video where you visit one of the famous shoe factories. As this shoe restoration for the competition is a Norwegian welt, it would be interesting to see if you can visit the Cheaney factory, they make a shoe with Veldtschoen construction, very similar to Norwegian. I have a pair made this way, they are built like a tank.
Always visit the Cheaney factory shop when I’m there. The shoes are simply great. I’m seeing here in these videos real skill and attention to detail it’s amazing.
Just loving those blue shoes, they appeared out of the blue. Both shoes though are a masterpiece of workmanship. No half hearted repairs here, award winning if I were the judge.

According to a post by Steve on FB, he placed Silver in the competition. Still curious as the actual name of the comp, curious to see the Gold if Shoe God Steve placed Silver!
The contest is the annual European Shoemaker Contest organised by the Dutch Shoemakers Organisation with the Dutch Shoe Academy. Steve got the third best score, at the very edge between the silver and gold... so close!! The winner for that category is a 33yo Dutch gentleman who scored 197 / 200, apparently the highest score ever given in the competition. I am not going to say his name or link to articles. I must say however that his starting point was a pair of high-end Santoni shoes that he himself wore for a year and then repaired. There are no pictures or videos of the whole shoe that I can find, only of the soles. I know nothing and watch Steve's videos only for entertainment, it is a fact that this young Dutch is a master of his craft, but in all honesty I find it hard to believe that the starting condition of his shoes was as bad as Steves'. Speaking expertly only from behind my keyboard and knowing nothing about shoe repair... Steve is the one who won.
"This is a lot harder than it looks," says Steve, as he does this incredibly complicated-looking hard thing. Red, white, and blue are also the colors of the Dutch flag, so the judges might have thought you were kissing up.
Wait a minute! Your retirement plan is to "work your butt off?" :). I like two aspects of this in particular, the amount of leathercrafting and the skill required to do it. Beautiful job, Vatche! :)
Steve this is beyond impressive, only the best shoe makers in the world use a seamless wholecut liner in their shoes and you replicated it with ease, hats of to you.
You mentioned travelling, maybe to Belgium. My friend Luc De Cuyper is a great shoe recrafter in Bruges. You may already know of him. Real nice guy and like you, a true shoe pro. Has a website.
