Honestly probably the best video I have ever seen on the one hander. Very complete and you don’t waste any time. It seems a little long but it really isn’t. Because you have included exercises and how to train at home. I’m really excited to give this a try.

These are great tips, and even though I am nowhere near what I want, I would suggest to everyone one more tip. Especially in backhand, pay attention to gravity and its effect on the incoming ball, and try to synchronize your timing (and your gravity) accordingly. This generally helps me with cleaner contacts in general.

I really like the clip of Thiem hitting at 8:14. This is a low backhand more representative of what most club players will experience. Take away 70% of the pace and move the ball into no mans land and it’s realistic. The hardest part is coordinating the footwork to position yourself properly and then have it the form you point out. Great video, it reset my backhand after watching, I slip back into chest facing forward and rotating my torso which produces a weak inconsistent ball.

I do have one question though, just as Anthony has mentioned below. Once I have prepped and set my backhand (and planted my feet), if the ball deviates from the bounce, and worst if it deviates towards me, I struggle to make the clean contact. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Really nice tips, as usual. At the start, when you talk about digging into the ground and transferring power forward, isn’t that the same or similar to the classic advice that your body should be moving forward when contacting the ball? Assuming you had to do anything other than run fwd to get to the ball, you must have stopped by digging in with the back foot and drove forward. Tx!

Just grab a frisbee and throw it back and forth with a partner. That's your single handed backhand. When you get on the court, keep it simple. Turn your back to the opponent, keep your knees bent and eyes on the ball, bring your racquet back and lower your racquet shoulder as if it's pointing at the ball, and then let it rip, as if you're throwing a frisbee. It's a simple stroke. It's mostly shoulder and some hip and legs. The arm and hand are there just to hold the racquet. By the way, the guy to model after is Stefan Edberg. I find Gasquet's and Federer's too wristy and Wawrinka uses too much muscle. Another guy to look at is Shapovalov.
@rawrss
@rawrss Год назад
Great analogy Jerry. I think all that's needed with the Frisbee example is the right grip on the racquet (some preference... But definitely enough guides out there for the vast majority of players)
@bballah9969

Lol throwing a frisbee is not even close to when you're hitting a one hander. I see you played at a high level 🤣
@jerrycallows3906
@jerrycallows3906 Год назад
@@bballah9969 It definitely is. If you don't get the feeling of throwing a frisbee when hitting your one handed backhand, you're not being efficient. Take a frisbee, stand sufficiently far back from your partner so as to require your body, not just your wrist, to throw it, and then throw it. That's the sensation you should feel when you're hitting your backhand with full force.
@bballah9969
@bballah9969 Год назад
@@jerrycallows3906 This is totally wrong in so many ways. First of all when you hit a one hander the racquet head is higher than a grip level always! Don't believe me? Look at the best in the business hit a one hander Federer, Wawrinka, Gasquet, Hass, Robredo, Thiem, Tsitsipas, and tell me where there racquet head is positioned at the start of the stroke. When you throw a frisbee it's coming from an horizontal position not a vertical position like when you hit the one hander. Also who hits a one hander with an open stance like you explain? The stance is either sideways, or semi open stance. An open stance position is only used if you are rushed and can't get setup into position fast enough on the incoming shot and your jammed up. Once you said Federer's and Gasquet backhand is to wristy I said omg this is horrendous info your giving out and this is totally wrong! All touring pros do not wrist the ball to get spin on there shots. The wrist is a by product of the kinetic chain you wouldn't know anything about that cause you never played at a high level. Also Stefan Edberg has the old school backhand and forehand his strokes are not modern like the way it is in today's game.
@jerrycallows3906
@jerrycallows3906 Год назад
@@bballah9969 Check out the frisbee throws here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kXKAf4qYDHg.html. Notice the similarities between these frisbee throws and the one handed backhand. If you can't, I don't know what else to tell you.
