Every new student I have helped into the air has reported that when they finally initiate a good lean back angle during their launch, things feel so much better! in this one I provide 5 steps to performing a lean back drill (without a wing) in a relaxing, effective and safe manner. I hope it helps!

Thanks for video... I'm on my 3rd year with approx 90 flights and never had a takeoff issue till 3 weeks ago. First nil wind launch of the year and while the wing came up as it should and accelerating, my knees started getting lower with each step so I aborted and slid to a stop. Not knowing what or why I setup again and takeoff went without a hitch. Fast forward 2 weeks and another nil wind takeoff and same thing happened but I caught what was going on... I felt my body getting pushed to the ground so I reduced power, maintained my run and legs got back under me and I added power again and took off. I'm not sure why this is happening now but that second time I figured out exactly what was happening. I will be practicing and perfecting this exercise and hopefully enjoying less running and getting drove into the ground!

Great content, as usual. I was actually terrified the first time i had the motor running up on my back. I didn't do this lean back practice at all. My first launch and flight taught me that it was easier than my over-reactive imagination was telling me.

I vividly remember going through the exact same thing. Most of the time when launches just work for new students they have to learn why it worked in order to keep it happening!

Well, my 2C: Leaning forward is definitely bad. Don't do it. But why leaning back? What for? You don't get faster into the air, since you are not a helicopter! You need power for _speed_ not for _lift_ So, my idea: LEAN NOWHERE. Just stay upright, add thrust, keep posture, run, gain speed! Do not lean forward, but do not lean on your back either! Leaning on your back you _automatically_ will _balk_ (resist to running) with your feet stepping forward ahead of your body! I believe all advise to lean on your thrust (on your back) comes as a "countermeasure" for leaning forward! Let's be honest: you _have to_ lean forward unless you do a power take-off (which is a bit advanced technique). If you don't lean forward you simply cannot pull the wing! But once the wing is almost up you have to add power and straighten up! Leaning back at power is not good! No-no! So, remember the "golden middle": Don't lean anywhere! Stay upright as soon as you can! Keep posture! Run upright with your legs stepping right below your body, not ahead of you, neither behind you! Do not lean on your thrust, as you will slow down your run! Best take-offs everybody!

Hey Mich, thanks for your thoughts on this! We can definitely agree that at least being vertical is better than leaning forward. My content here is to help newer pilots get closer to the techniques that make things look and feel right. When a newer pilot thinks they are leaning back, they are usually doing what you are saying here and just standing vertical. Sometimes it takes what feels like an over exaggeration to your muscles to really lock into the posture needed for a clean take off. Where I might disagree with you, is the fact that when you get comfortable leaning back further, as your posture starts feeling more natural, you will definitely notice shorter take off runs. Angling the thrust downwards even slightly lessens the load your glider needs to pick up and it means you need to carry less weight with your legs allowing you to move them faster, easier. To clarify, you should only be leaning back once you have that wing inflated, and under control. Interested to hear what your thoughts are on my response here, this is what I love about the sport, always expanding the perspective!

Would be better if you showed us an actual launch while explaining this method.
