What's the best way to improve your photography skills? One way is to step out of your photography comfort zone. If you continuously photograph the same subjects, you won't learn much. But leaving your comfort zone, you will learn new skills with every shooting.

You are so right about getting comfortable with a certain kind of photography. My comfort zone is landscape. I shudder to think about photographing subjects that bounce around like my grandkids or goats.

Great ideas! I love the discuss analogy. I guess I also never thought of needing to create a muscle memory on the camera, but in a sense I did from the beginning, by using back button focus. I will consciously think on that as I keep shooting! Thanks again!!!

Haha, I often shoot out of the car window, but I hate weddings and have never shot them. So that would be my out of comfort photoshoot. And not because of the shoot itself 😂 Anyway, I have a different question: is that a hearing aid or monitoring system in your ear? If the latter, could you tell about it?
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 3 года назад
🤣 too funny. My wife would probably say I need a hearing aid, but I use it as an ear prompter. I long tried all different sorts of things including telepromters, learning by heart, improvising,... I really try to get straight to the point with my videos and don't want to talk around the topic. So I prepare my text very well to keep the videos as short and concise as possible 😉
@PaulKretz
@PaulKretz 3 года назад
@@wolfamri Wow. I've never heard of such thing. Do you mean you repeat after what's being fed into the earpiece?? O_o
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 3 года назад
Exactly. I got the idea when I was first out in the snow and tried to use the teleprompter in bright sunlight at a distance of around 5m - totally useless, so I tried to think about what could be another option. After a week or so with searching for brighter monitors for the teleprompter, I got the idea that I could use earphones for that and started googling. It seems some actors use it - well, not those with my haircut obviously 🤣. It speeds up my workflow on location (where it is pretty limited), but slows me down a lot during preparation. But it's worth it IMO, because it is super convenient and quick to use and doesn't require much either. I was searching for skin colored versions, but I so far I haven't been successful.

@@wolfamri Unbelievable. I'm quite experienced in working with sound and video, but it is really hard to imagine how is it to listen and speak at the same time 😯 Although I have a slight idea as I am a translator by education, so I did immediate translation few times. I admire your work anyway, all the way! Maybe one day you'll show us your BTS, because it is really interesting how you do it with chroma key, in-ear prompting and stuff!
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 3 года назад
Thanks a lot, Paul. That would mean I would have to clean up the basement, which is one of the least enjoyable things I can think of 🤣. I'm really messy and still have all the props from the previous 5 videos laying around. But once I have to for whatever reason, I'll keep that in mind 😉.

Coming from Oregon I will take your advice with a grain of salt, it is dangerous to get out of my comfort zone. It's not the bad picture I am concerned about but the critters, rioters and surf that raise issues.
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 3 года назад
I hope I didn't word it in a way so that people think I want them to risk anything. I only meant get out of your comfort zone in a photographic way. The skiing example was just meant as an analogy.

I love love LOVE your videos, but I find bits like 1:33 and 2:50 VERY distracting. Can I ask you for a subtler approach, please?
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 2 года назад
Hi Ian. Thank you very much for your nice words and feedback 🙏. Of course I understand, but maybe let me give you a few insights why I do this. RU-vid classes are free and despite regularly getting requests to put my videos on paid platforms I want to keep them free. On the other hand the work on a single video takes me at least 3-4 days. Some up to two weeks. I enjoy doing them though, more than I enjoy most photography jobs. But in the longrun it wouldn’t be sustainable to not get some money back from the work I put in. So I need to try everything to please youtube and get further up in the search ranking. Very important in this regard are subscription, likes and comments. People are usually either really lazy in this regard or they forget. I‘m guilty of that too and I found myself surprised when I got a reminder on other videos that I forgot to like the ones I appreciated. But these reminders are often either way too long and boring, or easily overlooked. So I tried to come up with a way that is different. Luckily I got really good feedback on that and people found it funny (which was my initial hipe). Believe it or not, the statistics for these videos are also better than for those with a subtler approach. Regarding 2:50 it’s basically the same. Particularly we small youtubers have an hourly rate that is way beyond that of a taxi driver and educational videos will never be as popular as vlogs, etc that are more entertaining. I could write a few more paragraphs, but long story short: I’m afraid I need to make these kind of attention seekers to not spend more money for the videos than I get. I understand that they can be annoying and they are not for everyone but on the other hand they are short and don’t take away from the content. Again: thanks a lot for your time and feedback. I really hope for your understanding 😬😉.
