Is photography all about gear??? Or is it about the photographer?

Whenever I hear the question "Is photography all about gear", professional photographers tend to get mad and like to reply "photography is about the photographer".
How important is the photographer really? Wolf Amri will deal with that question and give you examples to confirm his theory in this photography equipment talk.

Thank you for this video and breaking the taboo. I stopped photographing for 5 years because I was frustrated that I had outgrown my 600d that I bought at that time. For a while it killed my desire to take photos because I simply wanted more than what I had and I didn't enjoy the results I was getting. Now that after many years I have the finances, I bought an R5 and I am so happy that I can finally photograph what I want and get the results I wanted. (ofc. I didn't needed high end gear but once I tried it I could't go back and wanted to wait for big guns rather than settle with something in between) I'm not a professional photographer, but I have a good knowledge of it because of the work I'm currently doing, and I'm getting more and more eager to turn things around to professional photography. I think it is important for many people especially enthusiast to hear this and not lose their morale that they are the problem, but that at some point it is what it is with cheap equipment. What I appreciate about my first camera is that I learned what my habits are and what type of photography appeals to me. When you understand what you want, the only thing that is left is - get that money for something better, it's not you 😁

What an unbiased explanation ❤️. Photography requires investment, patience and practice. There’s no shortcut to things in life including learning a skill. What you pay is what you get and there’s some truth to it when it comes to photography. Better gears also help u to learn efficiently & practice is key to better photos! I got a Canon 1100D recently and borrowed a broadcast lens from friends at a TV studio. It is about the gear because the kit lens doesn’t allow me to zoom in as much but it’s also about photographer because it was a fully manual setup (except AE and AWB). I still managed to get a few good shots with it.

You need specific gear for specific things but beginners tend to focus too much on equipment instead of learning photography. That's why I still say: gear does(n't) matter.
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 3 года назад
The right gear really makes things much easier. I have done that 9 camera entry level camera test and trust me, we advanced photographers really have no idea how limiting beginner gear can be in many ways. Plus, lighting without lighting gear is very limiting too. The list goes on and on 😉

Hey Wolf, great video as usual. I teach sports photography and I regularly have to give aspiring sports photographers the bad news that if they want to obtain the same professional results as the images they see in sports media, they're going to have to buy better gear (even if it's older and used!) Their budget camera and kit lens will only take them so far. My primary advice is to obtain better gear in stages. Get good with what you have. Then, when you've outgrown it, move on to the next level.
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 2 года назад
Thanks, Jack! So true, particularly with sport. Of course there is much more to a great sports shot than just the gear, but without the latter, you are almost lost for many scenarios. Keep up your goid work 👍😉

A few months back I got a brand new Sony a7ii gifted. I was excited but I was missing the eye AF-C, and some other fancy tools that newer cameras like the a7iii has. Also I was complaining about the kit lens. Now I understand the gear was not the problem. The problem was me being a noob looking for the newest and best equipment while I had no clue on how to properly expose my images or how to get the maximum out of my equipment. The equipment matters, but you must have the level to make it worth
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 3 года назад
Thanks, Mark. Focus speed and accuracy is one of the most important things in photography IMO. About 5-6 years ago, we changed cameras and that dramatically changed the amount of images that are in focus. Back then we were shooting professionally for 10 years already. Knowing your gear in and out definitely helps, but a cam with a few AI algorithms helps just as much 😉. But I also like to get the best out of not so great gear.

But gear makes photography more fun too. Just think about lighting gear for portraits vs no lighting gear. I don’t want to talk people into buying more gear. I only want them to not necessarily get frustrated, if they don’t always get the results they have in mind.

@@wolfamri I agree about the lighting, photography is light painting after all. As a side note budget lighting option that is often overlooked are LED grow lights, they come in various wavelengths and are extremely bright for the money. As a amateur photographer you have taught me a great deal and saved me lots of money, thanks.
@wolfamri

Funny you say that. I use LED growth lamps for most of my videos. I bought them for timelapse work, but when I experimented with lighting, I found that they did a great job at separating me on the green screen from the background. Realy enjoyed this video! But at 3:25 : the kit lens image in my opinon looks way better because the blur does not add value to the photograph and the kit lens image tells more story. Als you can't compare car driving to photography because at the formule 1 the goal is to be best racer and photography is an artform. And what the best photographer in the world is, is less measurable because it is a matter of an opinion and you look less at who can shoot the fastest shutter speed.
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 3 года назад
Thanks, Daniel. Well yes and no. I‘m not so much a fan of calling photography an art form. In my country photography is considered a craft, and I have to say I feel that is more correct. But craft or not, everything is a question os taste. Regarding 3:25: I also had to shoot that at ISO 1000 on a crop vs ISO100 on the full frame. But yes, tastes are different.
