Learn how to place your center of gravity for effective rooting in Tai Chi. In this video, discover the importance of sinking your weight even beyond the Dan Tian to improve your Tai Chi stance and expand your power. With the right posture and stance, it's possible to feel rooted while still remaining nimble.
You might have heard to "sink your weight into the Dan Tian." However, what does this mean?? For men this is more relevant because their center of gravity (COG) is much higher, making men more susceptible to being toppled over. In women, our COG is already at our hip, or Dan Tian, level.
But why not take it further? Why not use our powerful mind, and sink our COG below our feet, deep into the earth? When we do this we are even more rooted which also opens our entire body to expand and be in 'song'. In fact, why not sink your COG deep into the earth so that you are no longer on top of the earth, rather, you have become a part of the earth.
Now you can rotate that ball deep under your feet and your body will rotate with it, always moving from the feet up. This is how you can develop incredible power that goes beyond your physical strength or stature.

Great explanation of centering. As a former martial artist (Tae Kwon Do)this centering was very important. Now a Tai Chi student i find this a good balance point. Really enjoy your videos, very well done.

I love your explanation. I often misunderstood this concept and just bent my knees thus lowering my dantian. Visualization is so key! Thank you!

Thank you! Yes I just had a discussion with one of my most advanced students. They too, would bend their knees and lower the dan tian. However, it happens differently, doesn't it! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thank you for the great explanation. Scientifically it‘s so difficult to comprehend. My friend told me that when his Aikido master sink his weight into the ground, there is no way that he or other students could uproot /push / lift up the master. He is just like a tree. Is it true?

Yes. It is true. But it is more than just sinking the weight. You have to have equal upward expansion, good postural integrity, etc. best way to get there is with properly focused standing meditation.
