Great video Troy. Although it seems like a small amount of additional weight, I can concur that adding just 3g (1.5g either side like 3&9) does make a noticeable difference. To that extent, I was interested to find that Babolat RPM Blast is supposed to be about 3g heavier than most polys, and again the average poly is 3g heavier than most multis. Therefore, if adding 3g at 3&9 increases the swingweight by 5 points, when you string with RPM blast rather than a multi, you will increase the swingweight by about 10 points!(?). To an extent, that makes comparing strings difficult, since the frame will behave differently. Even comparing RPM Blast or another heavy poly against a normal poly is going to be not just about the string performance, but also a noticeable change in swingweight. I wonder if TW could possibly start providing a string-set weight on the database, since it is clear 3g around the hoop is significant. Even if the stringbed is essentially even balanced left/right, it is on average as far from the balance point as 3&9 are. I think it should be fine to just check one set of each string, since the different strings are an individual mix of one plastic or another you can be sure each set must have a fairly reliable weight if it is a standard length (unlike the variation in racket weights you can have). I think that would further aid the customisation process, similar to thinking about different grips. Thanks for your consideration!

I have RPM Blast hybrid with Tonic Gut and my racket static weight is up a tad higher than what I'd like. I wonder how much a difference it would make to have lighter weight strings in it given the impact of small amounts of weight in customization. When tinkering with different strings it may not only be the string characteristics, but also their weight impacting how a player likes them.

@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 4 года назад
Since it is still slightly off the center axis (6&12), it will help the torsional stability somewhat, and it will exand the stability and sweet-spot towards those locations as well. So basically expanding the sweet-spot in those directions, to help open up the overall sweet-spot of the racquet. Troy, TW

@tenniswarehouse

Yeah, that is a good place to start. I would try adding the weight at the top of the throat, or the Y, as the further the weight is from the center axis (when the racquet is vertical), the more it will help with torsional stability. Troy, TW

Hi guys 👋 great video, I do have one question tho; when adding tungsten tape to the handle of the racquet should I wrap it around the handle or stick it parallel so that the weight is evenly distributed?
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 3 года назад
For the handle, we typically recommend using tungsten putty, with a cotton ball, and placing the weight inside the handle, through the trap door of the butt cap. The Tungten tape is a slightly thicker than lead tape, and so it is somewhat noticeable when placing it underneath the grip. I have also tried using lead tape on the handle, placing them parallel to the handle, and then using a piece of clear office tape to make a seal on top of the lead. That seemed to work well, and is thinner than tungsten tape. We have a video here where we show a quick application of tungsten putty: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XPYcUghB4Xc.html. Troy, TW

Hi Troy. Great video! I recently started customizing and it's made a huge difference. I added lead at 3 and 9 to my RF97, bringing its swing weight up to 347, and it's made a huge difference. Given that customization can really change how a racquet plays, what do you look for when you demo a racquet? I've heard great things about the Yonex VCORE Pro 97HD, but I know I'd much prefer my racquet to the Yonex if the Yonex were in stock form (the swing weight is way too low and I'd want the balance to be more head light). Any thoughts on how to demo knowing that you're going to customize the racquet quite a bit?
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 4 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. Ideally it would be nice to have the perfect racquet, where you don't have to customize it, but that it hard to find. For me it used to be the Wilson Six One 95 18x20, but when that became discontinued, I gradually transitioned to the Yonex VCORE Pro 97 (330), which does a lot of similar things to the RF97, but slightly more flexible, and a bit lighter. Since then, I have gradually looked for more power, and a little more reach, as to why I am now using an extended length frame (EZONE 98+), this narrowed things down for me quite a bit as there aren't that many available. The VCORE Pro 97HD is a great frame, that will provide a more flexible feel, more comfort, and even more control than the RF97, but still feels pretty solid. I typically would look for racquets that have a similar headsize, and I also tend know the range of stiffness that I prefer. From there I tend to know how the string pattern will effect the launch angle, although sometimes string spacing or density is more important than just the number of strings. If you are big into how the racquet feels, then you should also pay attention to the beam width, in combination with the stiffness rating. All that said, the actual testing is important, because sometimes things seem to line-up on paper, but don't always workout on court, or vice-versa, as the materials inside the frame, and the way they are constructed plays a big part in the feel. Troy, TW
@alhs77st
@alhs77st 4 года назад
@@tenniswarehouse Thanks for the response, Troy: this was very helpful! One thing that's intriguing me about the VCORE Pro 97HD is something you said in your review, namely that you could 'whale' on the ball without fear of it going long. If you customized it to bring its swing weight up to match that of my racquet (347), do you think you could still whale on the ball and keep it in or would the customization eliminate that?
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 4 года назад
@@alhs77st, that is hard to say as that swingweight is a bit high for my liking, I would likely just bring up to about 335. I would likely have to adapt to being loose with the arm, while whipping that racquet weight through contact, but I still think control would be great, just harder for me to control over a long hitting session. With that said, I think if you were to try the RF97 and the 97HD at the same specs, you would be able to tell that the 97HD offers a bit more control, feel for the ball, and added comfort. Whereas the RF97 feels more firm, and is a bit more stable, coming from that rigidity in the hoop. Hope that helps. Troy TW

I have a random question, can you explain what Head’s Cap Grommets do for their frames? I hear you guys talk about how it provides more power (like you can buy optional cap grommets for the Radical, etc). Is it just a little more swing weight than traditional grommets?
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 4 года назад
The primary benefit is the protection of the frame, from being scraped on the court, as the CAP covers most of the outter rim of the head. Most Prestige racquets have come stock with them over the years. With the current Graphene 360 Radical MP & Pro (as well as previous Graphene versions), there is an option to purchase the Radical CAP grommet, which will obviously add protection to the frame, but will also add about 20 swingweight points to the racquet, as it adds some weight to the head of the racquet, with the added plastic on the sides of the hoop. This added weight will add some stability to the frame, as well as more plow through power, but will also make the racquet feel more sluggish. Hope that helps. Troy, TW

Frankly, you're better off buying a heavier racquet than a light one! I have customized a lot of my frames by adding a leather grip and/or adding weight at 3 and 9 o'clock. Do they play better? Yes. But the racquet I'm current using is over 11 ounces in stock weight. It took a while to develop the muscle strength to adjust to it but it was worth it. My light racquets - even those customized - all lacked performance in real intermediate match play.

I like the racquet but i find the swingweight to be lighter than my previous racquet.. I would like to have this more heavy head feeling on my new Ezone.. What is your recommendation on where to put the extra weight
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 2 года назад
The swingweight could becomes high enough to effect your swing speed and stamina over time. As mentioned in the this video, adding weight to the 12 o'clock will increase the swingweight the most, with the least amount of weight. So weight at the tip of the racquet will effect or increase the swingweight the most. The widest part of the hoop or head of the racquet will effect the twistweight the most, think torsional stability. So it really depends on what effect you want the most. If you place the weight at 2 & 10 o'clock, or the top corners of the hoop, it will somewhat be in between maximizing the swingweight, and maximizing the twistweight. Troy, TW

It really all comes down to the player's preference, and experimentation if you aren't for certain on what specs feel best for you. It is recommended to counter balance the weight in the head, if you don't want the balance to change much from the stock specs, but not everyone likes a certain balance of a given stock racquet. If you are sticking with the same string (or not looking to change string), then the best way to increase the power potential is by increasing the swingweight. You can add the weight wherever you would like to, above the grip to the the very tip at 12 o'clock. The farther you go up the racquet towards the tip, the less weight you need to increase the swingweight or power potential. Hope that helps. Troy, TW

Yes, 1 point on the balance is equal to 1/8 of an inch. So added weight to the top of the racquet will be less head light or more head heady, and added to the handle or towards the bottom will make it more head light, or less head heavy. Troy, TW

Troy, to increase stability and control in Pure Drive Team (285g) keeping in mind that we want the racket to be within 300g, where should I place the lead?
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 2 года назад
Typically if you want to increase the stability of the racquet, you will want to place the weight on the widest perimeters of the hoop, which is usually near the 3/9 o'clock locations of the hoop. This will help resist torsional twisting on contact of the ball, and also since it is pretty much near the spot of contact on the string-bed it will boost the plow through, to help get the racquet through the ball, when facing hard hitters. That said, to help you control that added mass in the hoop, you will likely want to counter the weight with a some weight in the handle as well, so that the racquet doesn't end up too head heavy. @Francis....most pros use much heavier racquets than what we see off the shelf. Although, the trend is going down a little. Heavier racquets are more stable, therefore typically less vibrations and better for your body. That said, if you can't swing a heavier racquet, of course that can do damage and you're game will suffer accordingly. It's about finding that balance of what you can handle. Oh and you'd not see Andy's lead tape at the tip of his racquet. It's under the head guard, assume the same deal with Novak, but can't personally confirm. Cheers
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 4 года назад
I think a small amount can go a long way, especially if you are adding it to a racquet that you have used for a long time. As @nostro1001 mentioned, many pros use much higher specs than most retail racquets, specifically swingweight, so it makes sense that they would add a lot of weight in the head of the racquet. I think it all comes down to preference, and also that many of the pros are stronger, and extremely fit compared to most of us recreational players. It sounds like the 4 grams of weight you have added to your racquet works well for you, and that is likely all you need. For me, certain racquets like the VCORE Pro 97 330, and Wilson Six One 95, I don't need to add any weight at all, and other racquets I may add a lot of weight to the head of the racquet to increase the swingweight to my liking. You could try adding the weight in the throat or yoke region (where the racquet forms a V) and that shouldn't change balance all that much. If you want to make the racquet feel more stable on contact, you would want to add the weight to the sides of the hoop, where you typically are hitting the ball, so usually that is around 3/9 or 2/10 o'clock regions, if you look at the hoop as a clock. Dear Tennis Warehouse. I’ve ordered your tungsten strip. I’ve switched from RF97 to regular PS97 V13 and i have the perfect manouvrability now. I only lack the swingweight from the RF97 on my Pro Staff 97 315g and i want to add 3g of tape under the bumper and maybe to not sacrifice the manouvrability i want to replace the grip with a leather one. Can you tell me if with these mods i will risk to feel my Pro Staffs 97 heavy like the RF97? If 3 grams at 12 o’clock will add 1 point balance at the head and the leather grip will add 2 point balance at the grip maybe i will feel the raquet just about the same in therms of weight cause i will gain 1 point of balance at the handle. Thank you

It is hard to say for certain until you try it on court. So maybe it is worth experimenting before you put the weight under the bumper, you can add it to the inside of the hoop and move it around a bit if you need to. Adding weight to the hoop will increase swingweight, so it will effect the maneuverability somewhat. Troy, TW

Hey Troy. I was just wondering how I should customize my racquet. I want to add stability and make my racquet heavier. So where should I add the tape, and I want to go from 9.4(Burn 100 Team) to 10.6, while maintaining the same headlight, so should I add in the handle as well? And should I go right up to 10.6, or go to, 10.0 and then if I like it go to 10.6. Thanks
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 3 года назад
To add stability, you will want to add some weight near the 3/9 o'clock locations of the hoop, as mentioned in this video. In order to keep the balance you will likely want to add a similar amount of weight to the handle, or maybe even a bit more, as the Burn 100 Team is pretty close to even balance when strung. I wouldn't necessarily worry about hitting a certain number, such as 10.6 ounces unstrung, and try to add some weight and then try it out on court, as it should be more about feel. Troy, TW

Both the Aero 98 and VCORE 95 would be nice racquet to add some weight to. Besides that the Head Radical Pro would be a nice option and less weight you would have to add to that one, it's spin friendly but not a super open 16x19 pattern, so still decent control. You might also consider Tecnifibre TF40 305 or 315 16x19, and the Yonex VCORE Pro 97 (310), or you could go with the (330) and not have to customize much at all. Troy, TW

Hi. How can we decrease the swingweight?
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 4 года назад
That is something that is more difficult to due, because basically you have to reduce mass from the racquet, especially towards the top of the racquet. Some things that could help, would be stop using a dampener if you use one, go with a thinner gauge string, and a lighter string material. Usually thicker polys are the heaviest, like a Luxilon 4G 16 gauge, whereas thinner multi string will be the lightest, such as Prince Premier Power 18. Those strings will also perform quite differently. Besides that, you would have to remove pieces from the racquet itself, such as cutting off the bumper guard, which we don't recommend as it protects the frame, and could void any warranties the racquet carries. Troy, TW

Some people add the lead to the grip what does that do?
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 2 года назад
If you add weight to the handle side of the racquet, near the region where you grip it or near the butt cap, it will make the racquet heavier overall but also more headlight. This usually gives the feeling of added maneuverability, even though racquet gets heavier, it usually feels as though you can manipulate the racquet easier. Some also notice a bit more stable feel to the racquet, although not nearly as much as adding the weight to the hoop. Troy, TW

@pmgareau
@pmgareau 4 года назад
I've add 4 strips of 6" of lead tape on bevels #3 and #7 (6g total) under my grip which is also a leather one. Feels great with the 5g ( 2 x 10" of lead) at 12 o'clock. I still have a solid head light feel. So I'd say try adding some weight and see what feels best for you.
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 4 года назад
If you add the weight inside the handle, near the bottom, or butt cap, for every 3 grams you will add 1 point more head light. So if you wanted to 2-3 more points HL, then you would likely want somewhere between 6-9 grams of total weight in that region. Troy, TW

If you’re using a string dampener, remove that. Use a thinner gauge string. And last, I don’t recommend this, but I have seen someone remove material from the bumper guard with a dremel.
@tenniswarehouse
@tenniswarehouse 4 года назад
Yes, what @E P said. Your best bet is going thinnest gauge possible, and/or lighter string material. So a thin gauge multi or synthetic gut will be the lightest compared to a thick gauge co-poly, but will also play quite different, so maybe just stick with your usual string type, and go thinnest gauge. Also remove dampener if you are using one. Taking material off the bumper guard can be a little sketchy, and may void a warranty of a racquet. That said, if a racquet like a Prestige has a cap grommet, and can be replaced by a traditional bumper, that will reduce swingweight quite a bit. Troy, TW

It will make the racquet more headlight, and for most players that will translate into a more maneuverable feel. Yes, as @pmgareau mentioned, you could try a thinner or lighter weight string, or remove dampener if you use one of those. Besides that you really can't reduce swingweight, unless you start to remove the plastic bumper on the top of the racquet, which gets into other issues, and may reduce the durability, and integrity of the frame, and void any sort of warranty. Being pretty close to the throat area it will be pretty similar to that location, it will add overall weight, won't alter the balance as much as adding it to the upper hoop, add some swingweight, but not as significant as the upper hoop, and lastly it will open up or extend the sweet-spot slightly toward that bottom of the string-bed. @@nostro1001--Just checked Head's website based on your feedback, and the specs on the Gravity Pro are listed as "315 mm / 1 in HL".
