Original Battle: • HUGE Yemen Houthi Miss...
Today we simulate an improved US Carrier Strike Group passing close to Yemen. Houthi insurgents launch a coordinated strike using C-802 and STYX anti-ship missiles, Scud missiles and Badr-1 rockets. Will the carrier group survive? If so, could it pursue and stop the attackers?

I'd say the biggest issues for being "Realistic", is that AEGIS will not engage SCUDs in most cases, because they're extremely inaccurate and the system won't waste ordinance on them unless they're actually going to hit the fleet, and the carrier would have planes up especially if they're going that close to shore. Patriot has been able to distinguish SCUDs that are a threat from SCUDs that are definitely going to miss since like, the early 2000s
@grimreapers
@grimreapers 7 месяцев назад
Yes but the Scud CEP allows them to be accurate enough to land the missile within the foot print of the CSG. At least in game that's true anyway.
@McAllisterCo
@McAllisterCo 7 месяцев назад
Aegis calculates where the missiles will land while still in flight. That’s how they can announce a missile was fired at a particular area in Israel even though it was intercepted by an Arleigh-Burke over the Red Sea. In fact 4 days ago the US ship Mason had two “ballistic missile’s” fired at IT from Yemen (after it intervened in the hijacking of commercial ship Central Park) and judged them as not a threat so let them harmlessly splash into the water less than ten miles from the ship. The captain explicitly said they assessed them as not a threat so did not bother firing at them.
@McAllisterCo
@McAllisterCo 7 месяцев назад
Also Aegis (as well as patriot) will automatically identify a threat based on known characteristics. So not only do they know where it will land they know exactly what missile it is just a few seconds after launch.

@@McAllisterCoExcept those were over ten miles away, these are centered on the carrier group and well within the CEP so AEGIS would engage them.

USS Mason on 27th had ballistic missiles land 10 miles from them. Didn't intercept. Even though they are moving fast the computing power of the radars can still predict where it is going to land. They would, but in DCS it takes more time for the Smerch's and scuds to fire than for the AShM's so cap would have had to set up staggered delays to get that result. Iirc in DCS it takes about 5 minutes for scuds to launch, vs silkworms which are almost instant.

What happened to having a Ticonderoga in the group? Usually there is at least 1 cuiser in a carrier group and they carry more missiles than Arleigh Burks. My only real issues is that and the fact that Aegis is so accurate it can identify the type of incoming weapon systems based on many factors. The Aegis system is honestly terrifying at how good it is as it actually links to all the ships and their radar systems as well as aircraft. The weapon systems are all links together too. Its like freaking skynet. Still love the simulations though. Keep it up!

Habitual Linecrosser. His videos are very informative about missile interception, especially as it relates to patriot. It's been said already, and probably not modeled but the US ships can tell when something is a threat or not and will not waste ordnance on non-threats. Aegis can tell almost before they launch these days.

The systems are designed to target the most immediate threat. Ballistic missiles are less of a threat than the guided missiles. At least, until they begin the descent phase. After all, the ships are moving, and BMs aren't going to change to match ships' movements.
@Utubesuperstar
@Utubesuperstar 7 месяцев назад
7:54 cap there’s a fundamental flaw with Your logic regarding the unguided stuff and the scuds. Aegis can predict where the incoming ordinance will land and will selectively engage targets based on the threat level they pose. (Similar to how iron dome works against the rockets fired by hamas and how patriot does as well) so the csg wouldn’t engage the ones that aren’t threats, we have seen this in real life with this exact situation, they fired ballistic missiles at an arleigh Burke that was responding to the pirate attack and missed, the ship knew they weren’t gonna hit so it didn’t hit the missiles
@grimreapers

@@grimreapers yeah I know game limitations unfortunately prevent that and I think aegis in game fires everything anyway but irl the carrier group would be more efficient with its weapons
@McAllisterCo
@McAllisterCo 7 месяцев назад
You said in the video “in real life they would have to fire as well because they couldn’t risk it” and I think everybody just wants to clarify with you that isn’t the case in real life. Maybe it is in the game but not in real life. The US Aegis system knows where that missile will land seconds after launch. Google USS Mason for proof.
@92HazelMocha
@92HazelMocha 7 месяцев назад
@@UtubesuperstarIt wouldn't because these are too close. If Cap had set the scuds to hit a target ten miles from the CSG (which is what happened irl) they wouldn't have attempted the intercept. In this scenario the CSG was in the beaten zone and so aegis would certainly have launched to intercept.
@pnkemp
@pnkemp 7 месяцев назад
I think Cap is right on this one. The example last week was a solo US ship so it could tell it was not at risk and so didn't fire. Defending a CSG the CGs and DDGs will have to defend the whole area, lest a carrier, oiler, or other ship get hit. @@grimreapers

Food for thought, AEGIS can track the missiles as they reach their apex and begin descending. It can predict where the missile will land down to singular ft. Not meters, not yards, FEET and INCHES. So it would know long before the SCUDS reached minimum intercept range whether or not they are a threat. Thats real life though. DCS doesn't have the ability to model everything. Source is Habitual Linecrosser btw, he works in U.S. Air Defense and knows a lot about the AEGIS. And what he has been allowed to tell his viewers about it (unclassified) has made clear just how terrifying a defense AND offense system it is. Look him up on YT!
@Jeffrey.1978
@Jeffrey.1978 7 месяцев назад
@ObiWanShinobi917 - I completely agree with you. The FC's and FCA's on ship use to sit and tell me about AEGIS and the SPY radar system when I visited them in the CIC on my mid-watch. Most of the time they had to remind me by starting their sentences with, "This is classified, so don't repeat it." The use to joke and call AEGIS a mini "Skynet" system within its own. 😆 Since DCS does not model EW capabilities that exist on ships at all, another huge aspect to missile and drone defense is the AN/SLQ-32 EW system. In some ways it was as mind boggling what it could do as the AEGIS combat weapons system and the SPY radar system could. A lot of threats can be defeated without having to use a missile.

CAP is for intercepting airborne threats like jets and helos. Even if they had Hornets in the air, they wouldn't be equipped to attack ground targets
@TanksForTheMammeries
@TanksForTheMammeries 6 месяцев назад
@@jamesdavis4307 OK, perhaps CAP isn't the right term. I'll give you that. But no CBG Commander goes into a potential hot spot without having full eyes and capabilities available at his fingertips. The only exception to that is a political one, where the CiC (president) says no. In the case of this scenario, there was no command authority limitation, therefore there should have been full AWACs squawking, CAP, ready on deck air to surface Hornets, the MEU spun up to insert Marines and all of the CBG escorts ready to maneuver and fire on threats. Also the entire fleet should have conducted masking and evasive maneuvers. Get my point?

At 15 miles out, you would think that they would be able to see the launch platforms getting set up well before a coordinated strike could take place. Launch platform should probably have to be well further back, at least out of direct los. It even then, you know, satellite, and other signal intelligence plus zoom zoomy CAP squawking about long, fast, explody thingys on the ground. On the other hand, I don’t think that the simulation could handle a way that somebody could get around that, as it would have to be some crazy World War II commando wacky Crap to pull this off. So…carry on! I’m satisfied!

What does the modern US navy have for ship launched land attack? This makes it seem like there's a case for having something quick firing enough to use for counter-battery with comparable range and that can be used when friendly fire concern keep the manned assets on the deck. The question is how useful? Eventually a strike group needs to get close to land (after all, holding ocean is pointless if it doesn't let you hold land). Has anyone ever explored putting 155mm's on modern ships? Or maybe some sort of tactical range ballistic missile?

127mm (5 inch) gun and the BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles are the primary anti-surface weapons on an Arleigh Burke class destroyer. They also have 25mm guns, SM-2, and SM-6 which could be used depending on range as well as 1-2 SH-60 helicopters that could respond with troops, machine guns and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles.

@@duanemckinley9353 the 127mm, 25mm and AGM-114s (assuming the launchers for the last aren't grounded to avoid blue-on-blue) might fit the bill. The rest seem more like using a 4 bore to shoot a mouse. How many Tomahawks can they get off in the first minute after they have a target to service? And how many 127mm rounds and power can you buy for the cost one of any of those missiles?

"fire ballistic missiles at the near location of a moving carrier group, the carrier group has no choice just to shoot those down". This is incorrect. AEGIS can classify the threat based on a HUGE range of parameters, and for ballistic missiles, can also tell the relative location that these munitions will land in. This can be showcased by the recent Houthi / Yemen strike towards a US cruiser that didn't need to shoot the missile down, as they detected it would not land close enough to justify shooting it down, and that was only a miss by 10+ miles or so.
@92HazelMocha
@92HazelMocha 7 месяцев назад
But these were not aimed ten miles from the CSG, the CSG in this case was in the beaten zone for the scuds so AEGIS would definitely attempt to intercept.
@mecampbell30

@@92HazelMocha More importantly DCS can't do that so it's kind of irrelevant.
@92HazelMocha
@92HazelMocha 7 месяцев назад
@@mecampbell30Actually DCS *does* do this. The AEGIS in the Sim (and AFAIK all sams) operate based on threat levels. The radar sees a contact, assess its threat level based on what the contact is and interceptors available and responds accordingly. It's definitely not as good as real sam systems (especially 21st century ones) but it does work on the same principle. This is why ships will fire fewer interceptors at shorter ranges the lower the number of sams they have remaining.
