When you learn a martial art, you start with getting your body into shape and learning basic skills and techniques. Then you proceed to sparring, learning different situations and advanced techniques. It is of course important to never get stuck on the first stage, because combat isn't really a skill competition. But it is also important to not miss the first stage, since a) you'll need the skills anyway, and b) you want to learn habits that match your good shape, not the shape you happened to be in at the start of your training.
@@jollygrapefruit786 Which part of fit, d'you reckon? If mentally fit, then yes, because Sports is 90% mental, the rest is physical. If physically fit, it's by an extent. It's fine to be physically fit: it helps you to build self-esteem.
This is pretty deep. Intuitively, I think a lot of us understand this is the learning process, but you've articulated and demonstrated it so well. Thank you!
Rtcwtwister!!! You saw my comment! Bro I swear this video was like a revaluation for me. I still come back to rewatch it. Thank you so much for the advice, it’s so useful in life in general I swear and I still be showing people this video
man i rewatched this video after like half a year and it still really nice to watch basically thats why in tf2 its better to play on something like TDM rather than MGE to improve your skills
You sir are a messiah of Quake, finally someone that explains in depth that there is more to FPS that just point and shoot :) The hardest thing to master in my opinion is thinking ahead, I notice in that when one visualizes where your opponent moves, aiming becomes that much more easy. Well I'm not here to give advice but commend you on your effort for sharing this with everyone. Thank you!
very clever video with good general advances, and i'm actually thinking the same way nowadays, i often catch myself analysing situations eg. there's a jumppad situation and which weapon would be the most efficient and how it should be timed:) back then i was an ut2k4 player and i was a good mover/jumper but i played pretty stupid and overly aggressive...after a long break i picked up quake live and i feel that i handle situations more maturely than beforehand:) hope you make more vids like this!
For example I generally like to play clan arena extremely aggressively. I chase people down with horizontal speed-boost rjs, I bounce people with close/direct rockets and I generally keep my lg on point. And it generally works against most players in my skill range. But when I play against more experienced players their defense game seems to be extremely sharp and effective, which I've always found frustrating. Well, during one such game where I was feeling very angry, I'd remained the last of my team versus 3 of theirs. They all rushed me and somehow I managed to kill all of them by simply +backing and throwing very precise rockets and quick rails against the very people that I'd been trying to win aggressively against the whole game. I must admit it took me a while to surrender my +forward bias but it was a good lesson.
I find it inconceivable that after all these years QL still doesn't have the option to STAY ON THIS MAP after every match. Sometimes it's in the possible selections but not all the time. It drives me nuts that noone on their dev team thought of the process of playing multiple matches in a row. They seem to be utterly concerned with randoms playing on random maps - something that basically doesn't happen in my experience. The only reason to play randoms is to find new regular opponents around your own skill level, and once you've found someone like that you don't play random maps anymore.
thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas. I totally agree with you. For me QL is like chess+Formula 1. I wish more players would use their energy on analysing and improving own game instead of whining about others. Peace / Mike in Sweden
As this video hints at, as long as you can read your opponent your chances of winning increase drastically. Also, something i think most new QL players seem to be really bad at is dodging.. if you get hit by lg for example, try to move outside the stream.. everytime it hits you, change direction. Once you get better at it, you will do more than so.. but its a good start for beginners.
Hey. I actually had the same problem initially. I solved it by only timing mega on all maps apart of t7 which has proven to be enough. With time you will developp a feeling for when the other items are spawning but it definitly takes some time.
The blue outline can be done if you replay the demo with wolfcam and cg_wh 1. You can have the same effect but less pretty if you play the demo in quakelive and use r_shownormals 1. Spectating the other player can be done in wolfcam if you get his playernumber using /players and then do /follow playernumber. However it will only be possible if you are sufficiently close to him.
Hm I thought I had answered already. Anyway the easiest way is to use Fraps. But I wanted the best possible quality for the movie so I used wolfcam. It takes a little bit to set up and also a while to record the scenes, but the quality is much better. There are plenty of tutorials if you google.
the command is: _picmip Setting it to 5-6 will make every map detail look like melted ice. kind of blurred out and the opponents/items will really stick out. closer to 0 is higher level of detail. i think this was on 2. after you've written " _picmip 5" in the console, apply the changes by writing "vid_restart" . that will reload the video and apply changes like that
Thanks for sharing experience. I'm interested in one thing, I've noticed that I can't advance any more. I suspect it is a ping issue, but want to make sure if not mistaken. Can QL be played @ 75ms? Feels like I'm always slow on reaction to dodge ninja rail hit or LG (even worse). So is it that latency caps me or I'm just too bad? :)
okay, you asked us to ask questions. So here is my first question, why not make 1 video at least in 1 day ? They are very useful!!!!!!!! Especially this one
I have a question. When do I start to learn how to time items and at what skill level is it necessary to time items? I assume with noobs there is no point in timing items and focus more on aim, movement etc.
thank you man, I hate to bother you about this but how do you spectate both yourself and the other player on your demo? and get the blue outline of the players location? thank you man im very new to quake
I've been playing Quake nonstop since Quake 2, and I'm still trying not to be a noob, lol. Watching your own match demos helps more than you might expect...
I'd say this is pretty good video if you know what you are supposed to do in the game and know how to use weapons, move around the map etc. And still get completely overrun every time if there are better players around.
Sorry for my english. I am playing fps games since 97 or so...From my experience the main key factor to succesfully beat most players in any fps game is mousecontrol. The mousecontrol himself is quite big topic where i can speak for hours. In these days where you have huge market with "pro" gaming hardware mainly mices its quite difficult to choose the right mouse or monitor. The accuracy and mousecontrol comes with low lag and combination of right settings(mouse+mousepad+windows settings+game settings+monitor settings). Some ppl get new pc on christmas and start beating everyone without even knowing why, they have smooth moving and aiming and its easy to track enemy without any difficulties....My point is, that there is right settings for every fps player, but it needs some research and experience to find it. If you have good aiming and smooth movement, the other things like timing, map knowledge comes with experience.
+grumpy impjee Hmm, you're not the smartest out there when you didn't realize in almost 20 years, map control, timing and tactics outweights huge differences in players mouse skill. Oh wait, you're even more stupid. You thinkg mouse skill is about latency & right settings :D Holy crap, Quakeworld players will beat the crap out of you on 20yo 3$ Genius mouse with ball.
+El Shuwix I am saying that mousecontrol and smooth movement is the key to succes(low input lag or latency is crucial), not that it is everything to be a champion like cypher and cooller...
El Shuwix :DDDD Dude, i am speaking overall about fps games, not only about Quake...And yes, i was playing with 250+ ping and beating players with ping 20 back at 2000, you are the one who knows nothing it seems. If you want to play quake and prove me something, we can play some duels...You dont get my simple point here....I am not saying that timing and positioning is not important..I am just saying what is the most important thing and i dont care if you agree or not.Without hiting enemy you can have timing and positioning like a robot and still not get a single frag you fag:D
grumpy impjee HAHAHA, what a backpaddling moron with memory of fish (8 seconds). Once he claim "ping is crucial", while later, he claims he did beat people with 250ms ping. You've beat people with 250ms ping in 2000 and yet, 16 years later you have no clue what is important to win in Quake :D Hmm, in 2000, you were like 1 or 2 yo :D
Hey! If it's your first time playing Quake you should look into first learning to move/use the weapons etc. For that game modes like free for all and clan arena are much more suited and generally also have a lower level of players. If you want to play duel use qlranks.com to look up the ELO of your opponents and try to only play those who seem to be around your level. At the start improvement will be easy, if you play opponents of your skill you will see you will get better in no time :p
Wrong. it's formatted bind KEY "COMMAND", the quotes are optional, but if you are storing several commands within a single bind, you will need it. To store multiple commands within a single bind, you separate each command with a ; ~ , also inserting a ;wait 5; every once in a while to avoid the flood protection of the servers. bind x "+moveup; wait 3; +attack; wait 2; -attack; -moveup"
played quake 3 demo online then I became QUAKE LIVE.... It's all about commitment. You aren't the best player and that shouldn't be your goal. Your goal in Quake to become better is to become the one no one wants to eff with. Be smart be fast think non stop. Wanna get accurate? Quick scope non stop. Then learn rocket jumping (Heck I'm still learning!!) Then last but not least learn to use your mouse at the fastest speed and to aim at the same time... Then combine that with quick time moments...
Well you are definitly in a disadvantaged position. But there are many Russian players who play with very high pings (even higher than yours) and do well in european tournaments. So you can definitly improve and become one of the best players but your way is more difficult :p You just have to play a slower game, check some demos/vods of players like agent, pavel, alfaomega.
imo he's just rephrasing the aim, movement, timing-things into situations. Because the situations becomes the other parts when split up. But its just another way of thinking. who knows which is better
just.a.bit.more.louder.PLEASE. (sound turned to max and could still barely hear you). Other than that, thanx for taking the time to show bits of wisdom to the noobs like me.
