Good low frequency reproduction in the living or listening room doesn’t come easy. Although there are several ways to improve lows, in the end a bass trap might be needed to achieve a true tight bass. But these bulky contraptions take space and need consent from the aesthetics committee. Up till now that is. The price is € 3400 including 21% VAT.

I discovered the AVAA’s last year. My space is acoustically treated by Artnovion but bass trapping was not adequate. Not enough room for real trapping. Enter the AVAA’s. I tried 1 on demo. Very effective in my space. When I bought the 1st and received it the dealer let me keep the demo unit so I naturally tried 2. Wow, more impressive than with 1. Cleaner, clearer, punchier bass and even improved mids and vocals. All easily heard when the AVAA’s are switched on and off. I ended up with more AVAA’a as I found even further “magic” as I added more units. I’m using the previous model but it works much the same as the new one. It lacks an iPhone feature. These work. Very well. My acoustic treatments now include full effective bass trapping. With 2 massive woofers and 2 large tower speakers, the bass energy I my space was uncontrolled. Now the bass is a highlight of the system. Love them!

Beste Hans, heel hartelijk bedankt voor het delen van uw ervaring met deze PSI AVAA C214. Ik ga deze basstrap zeker uitproberen. Ook is al is de prijs hoog, het effect lijkt groter te zijn dan de aankoop van een dure luidsprekerkabel of netkabel.

Thanks! Interesting placement recommendation. I originally thought it might be like the inverse of the subwoofer crawl technique - i.e. place the PSI AVAA C214 as close to the listening position as possible to create a bubble of tranquility. 😅

Hans, thank you for a thorough but succinct review. I was considering adding a second REL sub, to see if it might help to even out the low end in my L-shape room, but would it make better sense to try one or more AVAAs first? And should I avoid placing an AVAA in the same corner as my existing sub?

It depends on the problems you have. When you play music with deep lows and you suddenly stop playing, do you hear the lows fading out in stead of stop immediately? Then the AVAA's are your thing. In my country the distributor has a demo set of two to try on location. You might check if it's the same for where you live.

Love your channel HB. I've had my PMC Prodigy 5s and everything is groovy and silky on the frequency band except for the bass of course. I now have dB Tech Sub 618 18" Active woofers but they do not seem in harmony to my liking. It's like it's underpowered but that is impossible, the numbers don't lie. For this amount of money, I'm far from wealthy, I was expecting immediate ecstasy. It's a rather small den but I am not aware of how to attack this problem (which piece) is the problem or is it geography of the room etc..This video has helped a lot but first thing's first, the equipment must be in harmony, no? Frustrated in Canada. Cheers.

dB Tech is a great brand, like Vanderbilt is a great brand if you need a truck. The sub is built for live sound and doesn't go as deep (but a lot louder) than a good sub for home use.

I am sending it back today and am now searching for a truly efficient and "tight" woofer for a medium sized den. Interesting product, good review. Reminds me of the earlier ASC tube traps (which were passive). I currently have attractively priced bass traps from Blue Acoustics. My speakers are placed 1.20m from the back wall. The right speaker does not see any walls behind or to the right. Unfortunately, the left speaker has a closet wall ( kastwand) nearby. It took a long time before the low registers were somewhat in order. I'm guessing the 2 REL subs in inverted mode are also doing their job??

Thanks for a great video, I've been eying AVAA but not found any good reviews until now! :) But I've been quite puzzled by the technology they're using, because it sounds like its ANC (the sucking out high pressure would be by adding a low pressure or a 180 phase shift in ANC terms), but they say it's not and I have no reason to think it's a lie. So I figured they're using another method and the one I could think of is using a regulation loop with the normal air pressure as set point, then using a negative feedback loop via speakers/amplifier to force the pressure value to the set value (normal air pressure). But this is just the musings of an engineer, they could have done it quite differently using methods I'm not familiar with. If someone know what they're doing and explain it, it would be much appreciated! :)

I'm almost sure they mean they don't output energy, positive nor negative, they 'suck in' the energy generated by the room resonances. Like in the movie the Matrix the attacked person moves backwards.

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thanks for the reply! Although 'suck in' energy is a bit to vague since the interesting bit is how. So did search a bit for seeing if anyone opened one up. Instead I was lucky to find an article describing a bit better how it works (based on the previous model C20) "Inside the unit is a pressure-gradient mic mounted behind a micro- perforated screen carefully tuned to offer a specific acoustic impedance boundary. Also inside is an acoustic-suspension driver, which is mounted behind its own speaker grille-like impedance boundary. An analog amplification circuit propels the driver with a velocity that's in opposition of the pressure measured by the screened mic, in order to "zero" the acoustic pressure at the wall boundary or corner junction where the device is placed. Hence the name - Active Velocity Acoustic Absorber." So based on that it seems like I was partially correct, I just missed the acoustic impedance boundary (and inside they have a driver negating the pressure in the tube). So my curiosity is now sated. :)

Hi Hans, thanks for your reviews! Question, is adding a big akoustical painting on the wall behind your listening position on the couch a good way to mitigate refections from behind you and thus improve the sound? (Besides early reflections and speaker placement?) I have a similar situation and am thinking about that.

The increased level of lows can only be cured by a bass trap that is thick enough. For 30 Hz a quarter of a wavelength would be 2.83 meters...... For 150 Hz still 14.1 cm. So you would need a very thick painting....

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel not just thickness, you need enough rate of absorption as well. You can build a box that can reach low, but whether it "gets enough" is the tricky part.

Room resonances cause standing waves and they cause knots and nulls at different places throughuot the room, depending on the frequencies. But they all start at the walls so the pressure is normally highest there where three boundaries meet: front wall, side wall and floor (or ceiling, if you want). There the AVAA measures pressure and lower the air impedance. There is no phase switch on the AVAA's, it's not a subwoofer in reverse.

They work like noise cancelling that's the theory behind it if you had it near where you're listening position is and your meeting the wave coming towards you and cancelling out the unwanted peaks and troughs from the room and speaker is your goal@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

Ik ga ze binnenkort proberen. Had net als jij ook al een aantal vermeende room nodes opgelost door verandering luidsprekerkabels en 'interne' kabels in m'n quintet 15 open baffles en de switch naar grimm/Mola front end. De Auva 70 zijn onderweg. Die gebruik jij toch ook in set 1? Grappig dat je diezelfde ervaringen hebt met 'room nodes'. Ik hoop zo van de gigantische bass traps afscheid te kunnen nemen. Ze mogen absoluut van de schoonheidscommisie, maar van mij mogen ze weg 😅

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Beste Hans, We hebben ook een vergelijkbare vloer. In mijn geval 2 cm massief eiken op een folie op een betonnen vloer. Vandaag de Auva70 onder mijn speakers gezet. Heb eerder een setje Gaia geprobeerd, maar dat deed vrijwel niets. Dit is echter een schokkende ervaring. Ik denk dat ik 75% kwijt ben van de irritante dreun rond 55-65 Hz. Weer zo'n vermeende room node dus. In werkelijkheid dus een zwevende houten vloer die resoneert en bedrieglijk lijkt op een room node en al helemaal omdat het precies in die beruchte frequentie range valt. Volgende week test ik een paar AVAA's , maar zoals het er nu voor staat denk ik aan één genoeg te hebben EN al mijn bass traps weg te kunnen doen. Grappige is dat ook jouw kamer qua opstelling bijna een kopie is van de situatie bij mij thuis, dus ik heb goede hoop. Nogmaals dank voor al je geweldige reviews, waar ik heel veel profijt van heb. Hier thuis zeggen we steeds als ik weer iets 'nodig' heb: "het mag van Hans" ...

@@Audfile Foam doesnt realy improve Low Frequencies. You can build a big Bafflewall with mineral wool or thick layers of Basotect wich have an better flow resistence but the best way and space saving is to build an Array (Double Bass Array) where you control the LF energy

How about using dsp function to (sometimes even build in the streamer like in eversolo a6) counteract the room resonances. Or use a dsp in between streamer and DAC?

PSI AAVA C214 er alle pengene værd, hvis man interesserer sig for øget klarhed i lydbilledet, og et par AAVA'er hæver et system's kvalitet mere end investeringen indikerer!
