In regards to bases. Highly recommend doing bases completely separately. For my space wolf army for Adepticon last year I constructed and painted the army completely separately from the bases, then did my bases all in one shot. (I had footprints of paint where the minis would eventually stand). I was able to airbrush/ paint and weather up the bases at the end. The army won best painted in 40k Championships two years in a row. The judges said that it was my bases that got me over the finish line.

Just googled your army, beauiful work! I totally agree. Bases are much easier to do and more fun (Because you can be rough!) doing them in isolation. I often start to paint the model on the base, superglued down, then remove the model from the base and do batches of bases all together like a diorama project. These can be complex, or as simple as you want. Having no pressure of accidentally messing up your model whilst applying your pastes and drybrushing and what not is a much better experience imo.

obviously don't give away all your secrets but is there anything you can share? did u use 3d printed rocks for some of the bases btw? other materials etc. they look amazing dude, followed on insta

How did you get the footprints? Just prime the minis on the base and then remove the mini, leaving the footprint outline?

Top priority for my basing is what makes the paint process more efficient. Most models are easier to paint when on their base (or a temporary one). Some are not. Getting a model onto its base asap is a top priority if it's in subs. For larger bases, especially if they have diorama bits, I paint the diorama parts separate sometimes. Then glue them on later before doing texture/dirt. Then get the model on there near the end. It is all dry fit from the get go, to make sure composition works.

If it were me, I would do the Exemplars of Siege vehicles black with emerald stripes, to fully utilize that secondary colour scheme

First time commenter long time listener. I’m a welder so there’s another thing people do while listening to this podcast. I often have bits of molten slag, little slugs left over from mag drilling or laser cutting or lumps of weld spatter old pieces of rust that all look very good on my bases on my ruined industrial world. Scattered under the feet of my intercessors is giant chunks of what could be the fixing holes for the legs of a Titan. I tent to do all of this at the end. I find as James refers to it as framing the model I have to wait to see how the model looks before adding in the cut end of a bolt. Indented into the gravel and dark grey astrogranite of the world. Bonus point is it is a very good way to balance a model to ensure it isn’t going to fall over on a table.

In regards to painting and spending a lot of mental energy sharing it on social media, I started a "secret army" project with the premise that I'll only show it off when it's done and I won't even say what army it is so I limit my need for external validation and train myself to trust the choices I make when it comes to painting. I'm telling everyone in our group because I hope some people will join in if they struggle with the same things. It is a weight off my shoulders I didn't realise I had and it has absolutely reignited my passion for army painting/collecting.

Many, many years ago, I painted an Ork Baneblade & added mud to the track guards. I used ready mixed filler, PVA glue, sand & the contents of a tea bag for the clumpy mud mixture.

Another top notch episode. I enjoy listening to these every thursday morning on the way to work. Wasn't expecting to be in the listener comment's section, and having the leo dicaprio pointing meme happen in my head. Anyways, in the past I hated basing, but have grown to enjoy it especially batch painting like 20 bases for army building in between painting units. My process for building my space wolves army to play with my buddies has been a fickle balance between quality and efficiency. I ended up printing a lot of the greytide studio primal hound base toppers and glued them all down onto my cobalt keep magnetic bases. Primed (60) 32mm, (30) 40mm, (25) 60mm, and (3) 90mm bases with the toppers on it, and then i have paint roughly 10 at time and get it to the point I need to glue the miniature onto and apply the snow. once the squad is done I pose them onto the painted bases and see what i like and looks good, glue them down then apply my AK snow. This way as an army they all look uniform in the same area, I can paint them fast, efficient and fairly decently, and in trying to get the playable army done im cutting down on time on having to make something for every model. Now if its a display model i keep the base and the model separate, but work on them at the same time because the base is part of the character. wow that was wordy....my bad

Great episode, and thanks for picking my question to answer! Good to know others are reluctant to give back commissions. Oddly enough, after hearing George speak I find myself wanting to talk as fast as he does. My subconscious must be a fan of his speedy yet articulate style 😄

I think doing your base after completing the model but before painting makes for better light coherence in your painting composition while also being overall faster, but less of an option when doing competition pieces with their more involved bases.

I take a lot of WIP photos, and it allows me to both look at the model more objectively, and compile a timelapse start to finish at the end which is really cool

on hybrid TMM/NMM. Typhus Corrosion technical paint is really nice way to dirty down metal especially on chaos trim, makes the recesses nice and matte. On basing. I recently discovered that a layer of Astrogranite over cork sheet piece are amazing, makes it look like natural rock and gets rid of the segmented look of cork

What an excellent episode.. it's always great when you let Paul out of the dungeon to come on the podcast... why is it Paul is only on when Joe is not? has anyone seen them on a podcast at the same time? I mean... enquiring minds do want to know... kinda makes you wonder...

Fenris Games do a selection of moulds for flagstones, cobblestones etc. I just picked up the Flagstone on last week. They also do cornucopia of basing bits if you don't want to cast stuff

I love basing and I really went for it and took into account the basing of my T'au when thinking of the scheme. I wanted to paint them green as if they were fighting in the jungle and wanted an appropriate jungle base. I wanted to really get the detritus and dead leaves feel to start the base with and found that Sainsbury's fancier herbal tea was perfect. glue it down and seal it with some watered down PVA and it looks great. then add GW vines or ferns or paper/plastic ferns and it looks great.

Basing is interesting - Uncle Atom from tabletop minions had an approach which got me thinking - if youre someone who mixes games, then you might have composite units - so having a common basing scheme between some different factions (not all) can be a way to allow those to easily be tied together. Like if i was playing space station zero, or stargrave, i might have a marine, a guard, an inquisitor all on the same side. Deffo interesting thoughts from here as well!

Plaster of Paris is really great, I was wondering if anyone would mention it. Since it can be quite brittle I tend to reinforce jt once it’s in the right shape - I use a combo of water, IPA and PVA based on Marco Frisoni’s recipe.

Citadel technical paints? What are those, paints for ants!? Get yourself some AK Diorama series texture paste. Cheaper for substantially more product. Fantastic stuff too.

I am aware there are other texture pastes in better value sizes, the reason I mentioned the citadel ones specifically is that I only use tiny amounts for touch ups, and I can colour match exactly to the colour I painted the sand mix I use for the base 😊 If you were to use it for a whole base that’s definitely a good shout

@@GeorgeColemanMinis I figure you also would, just being a bit cheeky and helping to spread the word to newer hobbyists. Have introduced a few people to AKs stuff for basing now and the value and volume of the products has blown their mind. Love your work, keep it up. You'll have that Blood Angels army finished on time for 20th edition no doubt. GW might have even fleshed out the rules by then!
