Diagnosing a BE3 Alarm Code on an IMPULSE Series 5 Drive
1. Identify the Alarm Code: The BE3 alarm code is designed to indicate that the holding brake has not released at the start of a run command.
2. Understand the Alarm Sequence: Any VG Plus Drive does a BE2, then a BE1, and then a BE3 alarm code. The BE2 alarm code does not reference any encoder signal. It is merely motor torque at a time period. The BE1 alarm code says that based on encoder feedback, the drive is seen too many pulses. The BE3 alarm code is actually the opposite of that - it does not see enough or any pulses.
3. What causes BE3 to occur: Within a certain time period (C08-06), if the drive is not seeing enough pulses(C08-07), which if the encoder is fully intact indicates that the holding brake or brakes have not released or fully released.
4. Check the Parameters: The parameters that control this are in the group C parameters. Look at the brake release time(C08-6) and break release count(C08-07).
5. Generate the Alarm Code: Give the drive a run command and hold the motor shaft while giving the drive a run command. If a BE3 alarm is generated, this confirms that the holding brake is not released.
6. Reset the Alarm Code: If there are three consecutive BE3 alarms, when the run command is released, the fourth one within a 10 minute period will lock the drive up. The drive will not allow any further run commands to be accepted and the alarm code must be reset.
7. Record the Alarm Code: The BE3 alarm will be recorded in the monitor mode, standard monitors, and can be looked at in the fault trace.
8. Check the Encoder Signal: If there is a problem with the encoder signal, the drive will pass the BE2 alarm but for the BE3 it must see an indication that the motor is turning.
