It's a busy day at the maternity unit in Romford's Queen's Hospital. Bed 7 has been joined by Shola who is 49-years-old. Shola and her husband have wanted children for two decades and they are now expecting triplets. She's considered a high risk pregnancy because of her age and because of it being a multiple birth. At the Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary, A&E bed 9 is ready for its next occupant. Stuart has been involved in a serious car crash. He was a passenger with his friend Tom who was driving and he's concerned that he may have damaged his right lung.
Over at the Great North Children's Hospital in Newcastle, paediatric bed 27 in the emergency department is getting ready to meet seven-year-old Oliver who has been brought to A&E by his mum and older sister Stacey. He's fallen off his bike and his mum is worried that he may have broken his ankle. Back at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, minor injuries bed 12 is about to see its next patient, 21-year-old James. He's come to A&E with girlfriend Mellissa with a suspected broken finger after playing rugby. Bed 27 in Newcastle's the Great North Children's Hospital greets ten-year-old Bobby has been brought in by his mum having fallen over when walking his two dogs and gashed his head on some rocks. With any head injury there could be risk of internal bleeding, so the hospital's medical staff have to make sure Bobby is thoroughly checked over.
Secret Life of the Hospital Bed is a unique 20-part series where across the 60-minute episodes, fixed-rig cameras tell the story of patients who enter four different hospitals across the UK. The hospitals are The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, The Queen's Hospital in Romford, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and The Great Northern Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. The circumstances, the ailment, the treatment, the length of stay - everything is personal to the individual involved. But the one constant throughout is the bed.

In Australia our A&E are for cases the same as these but we have free medical/hospital care. We only get insurance if we want elective surgery in a private hospital. I'm a triplet born way back in the 50s. Mum carried us to 38 weeks, thinking she was having very big twins. They induced mum because they were afraid her tummy would not take any more stretching. Our birth weights were my sister 6 n half pounds, myself 7 pounds and my brother was 7 n half pounds all up 21 pounds (9.525 kg!) There were no heart monitors or scans just common-sense and trust. We were delivered naturally and each baby was born at 30 minute intervals. To this day I'm proud of my mum for all she went through. Dad was an amazing support. She breast fed us all too. ❤

Is he? He has obviously no fractures, if he had he would definitely NOT be able to walk unaided. Far too many of these patients take up valuable time and space in struggling emergency departments nowadays. / A radiographer

@@leenahalliday3249 You stay confortable in your office to report x-ray. Probably you've never been in an ER with a child. A little more empathy is necessary to live the vocation to work in an hospital (expecially with pediatric patients and their family).

In America. Some will say we use our ER (same as A&E) as first resort if you’ve no insurance. I watch this and think most of the time it wouldn’t occur to me to go for some of these injuries/cases because I have insurance and the high bill wouldn’t be worth it. Wait until morning or go to a doc in a box. Is the NHS prone to more no intervention needed patients because it’s free? Save the NHS. You don’t know how lucky you are.

@@tjones756 actually, the taxes in the UK didn’t increase by that much. They say that socialized medicine, though better than nothing, they still encourage people to get private insurance

You live on a very capitalist continent... health care should perhaps not be entirely free but available to everyone. There's a lot wrong with how it's done in America.

With the patients with neuro checks, there needs to be invented a softish ball digitally engineered to squeeze instead of the nurses hands. When I was still active, patients would nearly break my hands from them squeezing , very painful and dangerous. Digital readout would be so much safer and more accurate.

In and out of hospital in four hours. In United States it takes four to six hours to see a doctor, eight or longer to get out of hospital. I hope it's not true.

I realize. that sometimes things happen, BUT no women SHOULD ever intentionally have a baby over the age of 30, Never, ever, too many health issues for both mother and baby, (babies).
