The earliest form of martial arts goes back to Ta-Seti (the northern Sudan region) and was introduced to Black people of Kemet (the Egyptian region). Montu Arts (Africans’ “martial arts”) was recorded by the Ta-Merians in Kemet.

Speaking of dance involving marcial practices: Here in Puerto Rico there is a music genre known as Bomba. It is the music of greatest African influence on the island. One of it's older styles (which is no longer practiced) is called Coco Balé. It involved dance with the use of sticks in combat fashion. On the island of Guadalupe there is a music/dance tradition that is similar called Gwoka.

The wonderful Runoko Rashidi gives a great presentation on the African presence in Asia. Also Ashra Kwesi shows fight stances/glyphs like Dr. Carr was talking about on the walls in Kemet. As Dr. Carr was talking, I was also thinking of Dr. Obadele Kambon. He has some videos of Capoeira exhibitions somewhere here on You Tube. Great show as usual!

Ip Man ( Yip Man) was Bruce Lee’s teacher. Ip Man was using the system called WIng Chun. It’s probably the only known martial art created by a woman. Its known by its approach to combat using angles, touch sensitivity, disrupting balance and simultaneous blocking and striking.

I read that book , and it was a great book. I grow up in the south , we came up doing the wrap which was a wrestling skill using the legs , the kagg which a leg sweep designed to make you hit the ground and hurt you . We learned to use are elbows and forearms in a very lethal manner . Also slap boxing , when I think about it , it was a warlike culture that has passed on from older to younger brothers for years . I use to always wonder where did all come from , I had heard those fighting skills were born out of and developed in prisons . When I read the book Fighting for Honor he spoke to some of the same fighting skills that I and others in my group had grown up using and shown how they in fact had their origins in Africa . I recently saw a video that went viral out of Alexandria Louisiana where this cop was trying to make an illegal arrest when this young man turned swiftly and hit him with a very brutal and lethal elbow knocking him off his feet . I immediately understood what he done and how he had done it .( Long live tradition and Blood line!!)

I am Antiguan and Wari is played today ,mostly by the elders on Antigua, as a matter of fact, the world Wari champion is Antiguan, when I heard you say Wari, I said to myself, I am in the right room! I played 'brown girl in the ring, and patty cake back in the islands as a little girl, I am 66yrs old!

Prof. Hunter and Dr. Carr are magic together. I look forward to these sessions because there is a lot I don't know and a lot I do know. The honor of the gang culture is real. The drug and gun culture which the US government pumped into our cities and neighborhoods perverted the gang warfare dynamics. I grew up in Compton in the 70's nestled between the Crips and Bloods and saw the evolution from street beat downs to the drive-bys. As the drugs and money tainted the gangs, physical combat turned into murder by guns. Thank you for another wonderful class. Peace to you both.
