That's what i was thinking....am i seeing a 16 year old play in a garage or an elderly man teaching his sons...whay a great observation ans how deep!!! Thanks
When I hear Johnny Marr play a Smiths song with one instrument being his guitar I can actually hear every other instrument including Morrissey's vocals on some other plane. Like you can hear the rest of the song as a ghost while his guitar resurrects the other parts just for a brief moment and then he stops and the rest of the ensemble is laid back to rest. Just fucking beautiful.
His music is an extension of his soul and his way of expressing himself more than any other way like an artist painting a picture he does it through his guitar
And yet, he can mention "that pentatonic thing", rip out a run that Clapton or Page would be proud of - and then casually mention that he knew that wasn't right for the band he was in.
Answered every question in depth and succinctly. The perfect interview. The guy putting the questions was excellent too. A text book affair for guitar freaks.
What a guy, an inspiration. People understandably say he is modest, but actually he just seems a really decent person who has time for everyone despite all the success and achievement.
In an older video, he said he wrote Girl Afraid on the Gibson guitar Stein bought him in New York, the same guitar he wrote Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now on
Make it affordable enough and I will buy. Blue is my favorite color. I only buy guitars based on what they look like. I don't care what they sound like. lol j/k
I love Johnny not just because of his music but because he's so humble and amazing at the same time he doesn't show off at all and he admits to making mistakes it's just great to have a musician like that
But why so greedy with his fellow Smith members. Very unfortunate, has lowered my view of him and the other $$ grubbing Smith. Great music, but the patina and brilliance negatively affected by their poor characters
Credit to you Johnny for remembering all those riffs. That country lane late at night that you spoke about is a long, winding and twisty one with lots to look out for ... just like your riffs.
My son and I can tell if a guitar is good by the way it feels in the hand and then we play it unplugged to see how it resonates, the funny thing is a lot of guitarist we've talked to don't understand what we ard talking about when we explain that to them.

Talented and Genius are words that dont even come close to describing this man. Every time he starts playing, my hair stands on end and I just do not want him to stop. Superb.
Been a fan since the mid 80's, his songs and riffs stick with you for life. They become part of your soul, he's very melancholic due to being Irish Celt. But that works towards his creativity and inspiration, thank God. Very humble and very honestly true.
Gladiator0719 Spot on. He has said before that he tries to turn daydreams into sound. As a guitar player I love the melancholic, dreamy type music that he comes up with. It moves my soul. It reminds me of that state I sometimes get when I'm in bed, sleeping but on the verge of being awake, when things become very clear, almost as if you understand what's important in life before it gets swamped by the rush and humdrum of the day!
Some girls are bigger than others riff came about while Johnny was watching Clint Eastwood. So my favourite guitar player wrote my favourite piece of music whilst watching my favourite actor😀........Thanks for this.. the best interview I think I've seen with JM
Imagine being Johnny Marr and having this great party trick that's basically Playing this charming Man perfectly. Man i love how this guy is so nonchalent.
For those who are wondering: from a fan who ran into Johnny two days ago at the airport for his US tour, has confirmed that LPB will be a release sometime soon. If you've been following him the last 6 years or so at least, the new colors coincide with the new record.
Think I‘ve watched this outstanding video a hundred times now... I LOVE IT! Johnny is such a good and interesting guy, could listen all day to what he has to say...! And that lovely lake placid blue Jaguar 😳😊😍 Should get one....😎
never been a Smiths fan, but as a music and guitar nut Johnny is a modern elder-statesman of guitar. Read his book recently, such a great story and he must have been somehow blessed to do what he has done. an amazing life and long may he continue
Fantastic interview! wow this guy is so inspirational and super humble. Man, also how great is this hair cut? Johnny Marr and Paul Weller: haircut legends.
Amazing how Morrissey was the focal point of the Smith's in my youth. The other guys were just lucky to be around his beauty...now i realize how truly lucky Morrissey was to be around jhonny Marr. The sad thing is....with age come wisdom and empathy and love should follow to see Morrissey soil his genius with political bullshit and fake ideals of superiority I realized the core of all the magic and joy and greatness of the smiths was the melody tuned to perfection by poetry. Ive always loved rhe doors. But it was Manzarek that answered the question of why....now i realize Marr was tge reason Morrissey shined so bright... because he was the night...if thar makes sense.....glad to see Marr doing great and leaving behind a legacy of percect life filllled songs
So refreshing to see a guitarist being a musician not a musical athlete playing a million notes a second that no one cares about. Creating actual brilliant music rather than showing off. Awesome dude.
What a legend! Interesting, though, that in another video he says that he wrote 'Girl Afraid' on a red ES-355 right after he wrote 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now', not on a green Telecaster..
I just discovered Marrs music a few days ago. It was after listening to a live version of getting away with it and it really wowed me. Everybody everywhere has called him a genius but I could never get past the Smiths phenomenon. I can't believe what I've been missing. His guitar sometimes sounds like really complex celtic music. Thats the thing of it for me. Celtic music. Irish folk music - plugged in. He has some sort of connection to it. He must
Hey Fender, why have you stopping making the JM Jaguar in Lake Placid Blue, now only white and orange..virtually every demo has it in Lake placid blue, but when you go to buy one you can't get it. Please make it in lake placid blue
Sensitive people's instruments play themselves. If its a single note or a sonata, the instrument is playing itself. The music is coming from somewhere, and going somewhere, and the player just has a mix of filters and resonant systems in the mind and body that gravitate to those transmissions. I have a 200 year old pretty good violin, and it sounds good but it has a lot of character, so I play what it wants me to play. And you can bet I pick up my tele or a shallow hollow to get an intelligent provocative playful mood. Johnny reminds me of the truth that is too often pushed to the side in this land of garbage we have to live in. cheers.
@22:20 oh yes, "look how good I am". Refers to about 99.99% of wannabe rock god guitarists I've come across, whilst they perform their wankfest guitar licks...that includes all guitar staff at what was A1 Music in Manchester. I'm sure Johnny knows this too... He used to go there.
Johnny's such a cool guy! I like how he handled the "It's all about Fender, let's not mention any other guitar brands" type of thing really well. We all know he loves his Rickys & Gibbys. But I REALLY do hope that he will not become the new Clapton or Bonamassa in terms of franchising his name to companys who'll release all kinds of crappy "Signature" stuff. Do a Johnny Marr 1959 Gibson ES-355 Stereo with Vari-Tone (wired to mono) Custom Shop in 60's Cherry guitar next, Johnny, please! Or a 1983 Rickenbacker 330 Sig!
