What does brings us here? What draws me back to exploration of cemeteries and Mausoleums? I love the peace , serenity and the beauty of the cemeteries. Why are all the old tree usually twisted in strange shapes and directions. Is the the body breaking down into the soil and fertilizing them??

The history to me, is what draws me to these videos. Remembering that these people once lived, were flesh and bone as we are now, and their spirits are now gone to their eternal homes, and that some day we will join them. Also, the beauty of the old headstones, and the sense of peace and rest. " Remember mortal man, as you pass by, as you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you must be. Prepare for death, and follow me."

I am fairly sure Teresa’s photo is post mortem. Her eyes and the way her head is tilted back certainly looks like it. The cemetery is amazing, I just love the photos of the people and seeing their clothes and hair and those mustaches on some of the men are the best. The statues and mausoleums are so interesting, the detail and workmanship is beautiful. Thank you for the tour, always interesting. 💗👏🏻😊

Every time I see this cemetery, I want to go back there again. Such beautiful works of art in this place. It's like a big outdoor museum. Plus, it reminds me of being a kid and going here after church with my parents at least once or twice a month. Afterwards, my dad would drive to an Italian bakery to buy a couple of loaves of fresh Italian bread, still hot right out of the oven. We'd all eat a loaf of it on the way home. It's sounds weird to say, but I have some great childhood memories because of this place.

That lady whose photo was taken after her death: - photographs were very expensive to take many years ago so there was probably no photo of her taken in life, especially if she was poor. The family got one taken of her after she passed so they would have a permanent memory of her...

Did a check on ancestry and the Ascerenza photo is Marcus Ascerenza May 2, 1894 - July 21, 1918. He was from Chicago, in the Army, and died at Camp Grant, Winnebago, Illinois. The find a grave site includes a small metal footer stone with his name and dates.

I told my wife watching the last video that not very many people smiled back in the day. So I decided to look at some old photos of family members back in the 20’s to the 60’s and it was around the late 1930’s when I noticed more people smiling. Strange

This was due to the long exposure times needed for the photos back then. Smiling for too long caused smeared photos of the mouth due to movement of the lips form the person's lip muscles tiring, so they were told to hold a normal straight face. as exposure times became quicker people had time to hold a smile much easier. Also, you can tell Posed In Death pics by the clarity of the image over a live person who's small little movements caused some blurring on their images.

Yes. Teresa D'Amato's photo looks like a death photo like the Victorian Era. People didn't smile in earlier photos because they had to sit REAL STILL for some minutes while the camera's lens cap was off to allow the light in and capture the image. I'm not an architect but, I love that you are, and I'm enjoying your appreciation of the architecture of these old headstones and Mausoleums.

Yes, Teresa was death posed. My father told me ( would be 97 in 2020), when he was young many in his family believed it was wrong to look straight into the camera and NEVER smile. You were supposed to look dignified but never look into the lens. Something about the camera having the ability to see the soul.

I remember hearing something similar to that. It would take so long for the photograph to print that they held a resting face so the mouth wouldn't be blurry henceforth no smiling. Interesting stuff Have a Merry Christmas! :-)

What amazes me as they have these amazing pictures or portraits of the people on the gravestone how did they do that back then and how do they put it there to preserve it so well like these pictures are in sunlight all the time for so many years and yet those pictures are excellent on the Headstones normally the UV light destroys that stuff

Bishop's mausoleum on the hill is so grand and pretty. The pictures of the people really brings to life/personalizes the graves.

Yes, she’s posed. That was common in the early 1900’s because that was usually the only picture they had of them.

Normally if the picture was taken postmortem the eyes will look cloudy and her eyes still have their amazing color. Most likely it was taken with a camera with a long exposure time which was very uncomfortable to hold still for

I think that Teresa is posed in death. There was a "stand" or "prop" used to secure the head/body. There have been people in this time that have chosen to be posed, i.e. the gentleman on his motorcycle, a lady sitting at a table with a drink and her cigarettes wearing sun glasses. Propping loved ones for a final photo was the norm back then. What's old is new again!

In old days, people might have to stand still and not move a muscle in order to get a picture taken. It's easier to hold a position longer without smiling then it is with smiling.

That lady does look posed in death. I asked my mom why no one smiled in pictures ages ago and she said it was because times were hard and there wasn’t much to smile about. It makes sense.

also, they considered it disrespectful to smile for a camera, a new invention and novelty. pictures were very very expensive, so no fooling around for your one picture I guess.

@@FacesoftheForgotten, the more obvious reason was the longer exposure times needed to produce the photo. Sometimes up to 5min back then. You try holding a smile for a picture for that long without moving your lips! lol This is why they were told to hold a natural facial pose as to not blur the face from movements. It may have been considered disrespectful towards the photographer as to wasting his time & causing poor image by having the face turned out blurred. And as you stated, VERY Expensive back then to have an image taken, so maybe a disrespect to your family as well not having a well produced image due to movements made during the exposure time

It’s a sad state of affairs that the only picture that the family had was of them dying or in death .... unless u were rich , disease was rife simply medications unavailable.....imagine the life of burying most of your children...... I cannot 😱 women were dying in childbirth regularly, and here we are in 2020 suffering from a deadly pandemic... it’s still only a small taste of how they lived .....god bless u all , amazing videos as always, so knowledgeable, I’m guessing a few are post-mortem pics 😢

Great vid as always. Yes, I think it's a posed picture too, eyes, mouth and head give it away. My grandfather had a picture of my aunt in her coffin when she passed around the age of 2 or 3, his last name was Fanelli, same as the grave with pictures you shown.

My grandmother told me that in many countries like where her family came from that it is rude and ungodly to smile. Not having good teeth would be a good reason not to smile too I totally get that since having most of my teeth knocked out and broken from a car wreck.

They also used timed exposures, so a straight face was the best way to do it. Plus, many of these death photos were probably used because they didn't have any other pictures of themselves.

I agree with your fans, she looks dead. I'm not sure if her eyes were painted on or not. It looks very strange... As we know, pictures were very costly in the early 1900's so most people waited until their relative passed before capturing a last memory picture of their loved ones... unlike now where selfies are the rage. May all these past souls rest in peace !!

The pic of the women is post mortem. Her eyes are painted in later. I did go look for the soldier with no name . But did not find anything about him. But i did see many other beautiful tombstones. Also from a little boy on a bench

I just love your specials on this cemetery I have been there. This place holds a lot of history much more than al Capone. Look at all the faces when they alive they look directly at the camera. This woman God rest her soul as with the others that were posed after death they are not looking at the camera. Their eyes are fixed and looking sort of off in space. The eyes can not be controled. She had passed. This custom began in the early 1800s and continued till the late 30s. I think that custom was disgraceful.

We have a cemetery in Sydney Australia called Rookwood with over a million graves tombs ect and sadly it grows every day We have a saying that is crook as Rookwood Merry Christmas and have a great new year 🇦🇺🙂

I'm watching this Christmas day. It before noon. Its very chilly the wind chill is in the teens. I'm not having no big supper, no family will be coming. I won't be cooking. But I'm blessed. My health is OK. I've said my prayers, thanking mother Mary, Jesus, Joseph and father God. Like many of you have lost loved ones, most due to old age. I'm not looking for gifts. I just found out that one of the reasons is it was considered rude back than a smile on the photo, insulting. My my how things have turned around? I’ll mention it in my next video, but I’m already 10 videos ahead ha ha Ha will have to wait

Hard to tell about THE LADY-IN-GAZE because it is such a strange pose and not like a pose of an alive person. She looks like she might be in a reclined position, but I'm not sure. I wonder if the eyes were painted on?

Why would there be copyright issues for mausoleums on bishops hill from the RC Church? It should be just like visiting the outside of any other mausoleum. Obviously you're not going inside. I was hoping to see the outside of Cardinal Cody's final resting place which is the one pictured there. He was a controversial man of the time for the city of Chicago and beyond. It would be nice to see on video and get some of the history. Maybe on a return visit? I have never heard of copyright issues on a cemetery before.

it's private property. I was threatened (not here) that "if we ever see your white truck again"...and: "we have cameras, we are watching for you"... I have 2 episodes there I had to put on indefinite private mode. why risk it? these catholic cemeteries here are all interconnected. get this, they even said I could not video in the open air, the general outside cemetery. can you believe that? hollow threat? maybe. BUT-it is private property, not public...so, why chance it. thats why I say don't hit a hornets nest. I just moved on.

@@FacesoftheForgotten Sorry to hear this treatment. That's a horrible way to mistreat people who are coming to a Catholic cemetery. My relatives are buried in an Archdiocesan Catholic Cemetery outside of Philadelphia and I would be making a call to the Archdiocese if I was treated like that and I was visiting my Dad's or grandparents grave. It could be that the employees or security are just poorly trained. My understanding was that the Cemeteries are Church property.

Back then people didn't smile in pictures because the exposure time took too long it was uncomfortable. I agree this one does look postmortem.

Please keep coming back to this cemetery, there are a lot of Italians (my grandfather was from Italy), I want to see if his family name appears there. I love your channel and how respectful and thoughtful you are during your filming of the graves. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

In Mt Carmel Cemetery (sorry I don't recall which episode) is the mauselom of Francesco Garofalo and his wife Mary. It's the one that had Santa Barbara at the top...I don't know why either, however Francesco was born Dec 2, 1873 Italy died Jan 15, 1948 North Ave Hospital buried Jan 19th. Mary's name was Verille born June 27, 1870 Italy died April 23, 1934 she was living at 937 S Wesley Ave at that time, buried Apr 28th. The informant is a lady named Elizabeth West. Coincidentally Francesco (Frank) last worked in 1930 as a helper in undertaker office. He had a 3rd grade education. He arrived in 1894 and Mary arrived in 1889. They were married in Chicago Oct 7, 1907. (est ages would be 34 & 37, probably the most likely reason no children) In Mt Carmel there are several Garofalo's. Adela, Agnes, Angelo, Antonia (Biscione), Bettina, Carolina, Dominick, Edwardo, Frances, Gaetano, George, Giuseppe, James, Laura (Ramsden), Luciano, Maria F., Michael, Michael R., Michele, Nicasia, Pasquale, Pietro and Vincenzo. The birth year for "Frank" is 1873, of those above who could be his siblings are: Edwardo 1882-1954. James 1871-1934, Nicasia 1878-1919, Pasquale 1863-1932, Vincenzo 1871-1934. There were none that were old enough to be his parents. Sorry I couldn't help with Santa Barbara, but for what it's worth, there are zero Santa Barbara's buried in that cemetery.

Ascerenza is dressed in a uniform from WW1 just like my grandfather had his photo taken in. The soldier may have gone missing in France, and when the family realized he wasn't coming back put up a monument to him. They probably didn't have any information about the day he went missing which might be the reason for there not being a death date. There was so much artillery fire in that war of the trenches that they young Ascerenza could have been buried in a trench, fallen into a shell hole in no man's land and was buried by another artillery blast, or he may have been obliterated, blown to atoms as they used to say. Without a doubt all war is hell but WW1 was especially so, using tactics that were current in the 1860s, but facing weapons unlike the world had ever seen.
