Great video! Always look forward to your Friday report. Been fishing the delta for about 5 years and just when you think you know what you’re doing you get skunked. Will definitely use your advise.
I have used the first two strategies as often as possible, but your 3rd strategy is new to me and will give it a try. Thanks for the tip. On punching and frogging, even knowing there is a lower catch percentage, the catch can be much bigger. That's my experience with those techniques over ten years of bass fishing the Delta. On the 3 baits you suggested, I agree 100%, especially the first 2 bait suggestions.
Yea - no secrets. I will say that in the last few years I have -with out a doubt landed larger numbers of bigger fish on small walking baits than frogs- I think the % for bigger fish on the frog are greater but the hook up and landing rate are better on the walking bait. Another reason My catch may be better on the walking bait is that I fish them very early and very late - the fish that are in the slop in the day come out at low light-when I fish mid day the frog comes more into play. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the tips! Heading up there for a club tournament in a couple months. It will be my first time boating the Delta, I back seated the only time I’ve fished it. Can you shine some light on safety tips when boating the delta- tides, large barges pulling you in/out when they go by and other safety tips for someone who only fishes lakes.
Really should have no problems-keep your speed down in the sloughs and watch for other boaters cutting corners. Ships and barges not really a problem-unless you have a break down in front of one. You'll have a great time-good luck. P.S. If your going out of big break their is a bar you will cross going to the channel but the channel is marked really well.
Thank you Steve for sharing your knowledge of the delta and pointers to help people like me that have a tendency to stick with one technique whether it’s working or not and that is a drop shot . I have thrown chatter baits with minimal success I don’t have any jackhammers do to the price point I can afford them but have a hard time justifying one. Doe’s it really make that much difference and if so if you were only going to buy three what color and weight would you buy for the delta . I might have missed or you didn’t mention the trailer you were using on you chatter baits .Thanks again
Great tips Thanks! Used your previous chatter bait recommendation to catch a keeper striper yesterday. Bass oh Bass where are you? Will try these techniques to get the Bass skunk off the boat.
Chatter baits are great for stripers-they will try and rip the rod out of your hand. You will also get hit hard with no hook up and 2 seconds later the fish will be right bake to smash it again. Lots of fun.

Love these tips. Thanks, Steve. I’ve saved this video in my tips list and will be reminding myself with it before going out next time. One real challenge I have is covering water from a kayak. That said, focusing on the points is something I can try, I just will only hit a few. Would you still recommend that approach?
Yea-if your just fishing a couple of points a day I would try and get really familiar with each point. Learn where the flats are and the deep drop offs then fish fast and if you have three islands to fish with 6 points make sure to rotate the 6 points as many times as pos. hopping to find a pattern on whey're holding-then you can just rotate the same like areas. In a yak you can really get to know the neighborhood and you will find yourself heading to a exact spot because you will tend to catch in that spot. I hope that makes sense.
@@indeeponthedeltawithstevec5997 that’s a great idea and makes sense. I can think of a few islands to start with at my various launches. Say, is an island point the same as a channel point in this context? You know, like where one channel intersects another forming a point?
Really appreciate you telling it like it is. I felt exactly like you said - I know the Delta is great, but why am I not catching them! Your advice was great, especially about the time windows. I was out a few days last week after work, and caught a few each day, but Sunday I was out for hours mid-day and didn't get a single bite. Thank you so much for your insights.
Slow and slower. You will get some big bites early mornings- at dark-when the water starts approaching 60%-the pre spawn females get nasty. Good luck - send me a pic.
Steve, when your froggin in spring/summer, do you walk a frog, or use an Ish's popping Phattie, of do you just twitch a frog forward like little jumps. Some people whom I have talked to make little jumps until they get bit, as they say frogs do not swim side to side. Second point: I am a back seater, and throwing a bubba walker would seem to be a slow bait when my boater is fast on the trolling motor, I could not let it sit very long. I assume just popping, popping and not letting it sit... It's hard fishing from the back. I would definitely fish up front with my boater as doing the troughs and outside edge of 6 feet with drop off. Another alternatives is working a delta craw colored squarebill crankbait, 1/2 oz. Arky style jig... Also, I knew Cooch, and talked to him several times over the phone as well meeting him in a seminar. He was a class act. On one of his videos, he was fishing in February pre-spawn or bass pre staging. He was using a Black and brown jig with a craw colored uncle josh pork rind. They do not sell those any more. He fished points off tulle islands, and fished tulle walls right near the marina where he put in. He was bringing the large bass in. Its the video he has with Nick the informative fisherman going out in February. Not sure what year.
Hi Lydia-I like to walk the frog and like everything it really depends on the day with how fast your fishing. If your in the back seat youhave to go with the flow. The IF video was shot a long time ago-the Delta has changed quite a lot. Everything in that video still worksbut you have to be in the right spot at the right time-Cooch had 50 years of exp. and on one can teach that.
Great video mr Steve. I think I need a dedicated chatterbait rod. Did you have a rod recondition in your chatterbait video? I watched it when I first found your channel. That vid have the sweetest shot of the bite when a bass comes from behind and the the link go slack. I worm fish mostly and have only caught a few on the chatter so seeing that was new to me.
Danny-your going to love the chatterbait-when the bass hit a chatterbait they slam it-I have a Dobbins rod I really like-it's on my boat-I will send you the numbers tomorrow.
Damn nice fish! Any tips for these pesky bass around my dock? I can get a senko in their face and they just laugh and swim away. Tried chatter bait to no luck either. They look like some decent bass too! Need to break this drought and put one on the scoreboard for 2021.
Wait till after dark. If the don't bite keep an eye on them daily till they lock on beds - then it's lights out. The fish comming shallow right now may not be hard to catch - wait them out.
@@indeeponthedeltawithstevec5997 they are here every day at low tide in maybe a foot of water but spook real easy and won't touch any bait I give them. Will keep trying, good news is as each day goes on I am seeing more of them.
Thanks for the report Rick. It's day to day and the reports are all over the board. Some good sticks are struggling one day and the next day joe blow lands 4 or 5 fish.
Thats a good observation and I think you are on the money. I have found that the bite window for the spinner bait is getting smaller and smaller every year. Right now for most anglers it may be 50/50-in 2 weeks it will turn more to the chatterbaits.I think it maybe the chatterbait fishes better in thick vegetation. In the past I would use spinner baits all year-now for me -it's early spring then one to the jackhammer for the rest of the summer .

I used to get them at TW but I think they no longer cary them. I hear that Bass Pro has them. I am also having good luck with a Big Bite Baits product that I will have to read the bag to tell you the name. Let me know if you can't find the reel-n-shad

Was island hopping like you suggested. Threw the chatter bait for like 4 straight hours with no bites, was hoping to try that trailer to see if it would make a difference for me
@@deltarattv511 Thanks for the report Tim-don't feel too bad-the reports have been all over the board-I had good luck last week on a chatterbait and this week zero-most guys catching fish this week have been using worms-I'm going out in the morn. and my first bait will be the chatterbait but It won't stay on long before I pull out a worm.
Hey Dante thanks for the reply. The 3 baits I talked about are all really versatile baits. If I fish all 3 baits inone spot I start with the top water-go to the worm and wnd with a chatterbait. I will change around quite a bit untill I can find a pattern-remember when your running and gunning you more than likly don't have a great pattern so the pattern is covering water.

@@indeeponthedeltawithstevec5997 your comment on fishing during the dark to light or light to dark time frame is spot on though I forgot to mention that. Those are normally the best times to catch fish anywhere anytime of the year. I normally catch all my fish in the evening and then fish in the dark. It's easier to catch fish at night and for some reason I always catch more in evening to night than in the early mornings. I tend to fish lakes more and go to hennessey a lot because it's a perfect bank fishing lake, easy to get to and has some good fish if u can find them but the fish didn't bite for anyone between nov-feb. They just recently started moving in some, not all the way shallow yet but closer and a few did move shallow but those bass tend to have a specific time frame when they will bite and it stays consistent usually. Right now it's about 5-9pm u can get fish in usually half hour increments but the main times that actually hit is really like 545-730 but u can still yank a few n the broader 5-9 if ur using the right stuff. Jerkbaits r working great, hard and soft bodied, chatterbaits, sinkos, squarebills, the fish are finally starting to move from ultra slow finesse back to hitting reaction baits and from 3 months of nothing but skunks, the past couple weeks I have like 6 or 7 trips now in a row of no skunks and haven't got more than 3 in a session yet but maybe today/night. Now that fish r biting again I need to hit the delta again and see what happens. I'll probably go try along 160 again towards the antioch bridge. I need to check the roads for sherman island to see if i can go on that road along the water under the bridge I've always assumed it was private but i have to check.
I can always find the comments, but never any specifics about recommended baits. Obviously not particularly adept at navigating You Tube. Also, looking for instructional video on flipping technique-recommendations?
